One thing that annoyed the stuffing out of me about Gloria in the latter seasons of AITF was when she would touch and pinch Archie's fingers or other parts of his body. Why was she allowed to get away with it? [Although in one ep., Archie bit her]

She was allowed to get away with it because she was Daddy's little girl.

You mean Daddy's Little Goil???

And of course she got away with it!

Gloria got on my nerves i feel Aitf could been better if she was not there at all with diff charactor or so playing Gloria sally was not good at all n could not act to save her life and dont get me started on her constant whinning.

I agree 100%... and man, her lack of acting skills were REALLY obvious when teamed up with THAT group!

She WAS pretty hot though :) It's just too bad they didn't get someone who was hot, but could also act!

Still, when I watch the early AITF episodes (I only liked the show when all four of them were living under one roof, I stopped watching it almost immediately after Mike and Gloria moved out), they're still great to watch... I wouldn't say she ruined any episodes with her lousy acting... the other three were just too good! It does make me wonder though...was she the only actress to audition for the role of Gloria? It's hard to imagine her being the 'best' of any group of candidates....

Archie really did tolerate a lot of abuse from her.
I didn't like the way she would hit him over the head, pinch him, etc. It seemed very childish and bratty.
Archie should have belted her in the mouth, but he would never do that to his "Little Goil."

Yea Gloria really went at him like she wanted to hurt him. I'm surpised she didn't poke him in the eye. I felt bad for Archie at times.

So did I. I hated when Gloria would beat on him and he would do nothing, but that's Archie. He would never smack Gloria even when she deserved it, and she did deserve it when she was pinching Archie and stuff.

She was abusive to both Archie and Mike and I didn't like that. Pulling their fingers apart, slapping, grabbing and pulling on Mike's chest hair... I didn't think it was funny. Especially at her age, you know?

As to whether or not other actresses were screened for the part, that would be a yes. If memory serves, Penny Marshall and Rob Reiner were married at the time and she tried out. I'm also thinking in the alternate pilots, there were different actors and actresses playing the stivics parts.

OH Nuts!

I do think Gloria crossed the edge a bit with Archie and Mike. I mean with Archie SHE WAS living in his house and if she didn't like it then she & the Meathead should have left.

As for Sally's acting skills I thought they were fine BUT imo it was Jean Stapleton and Carroll who REALLY MADE the show.

I think Archie should have smacked her everytime she abused him as she did. He was still her father and it was his house so yes, I feel he would have every right to kick her bratty ass. That was a big reason that I didn't like Mike and Gloria. I recall that when they first met Mike, THEY (Mike and Gloria) had already decided that they would live there without even consulting Archie first! Then as they lived there for all those years, mootching off them, they totally disrespected Archie.

In the episode Battle of the Month Archie and Edith should had jumped Gloria by the way she was verbally hauling off on them. Here is a grown you know what woman and married to boot living under her parents roof and talking to them like she was the parent and they were the children. There were times Archie was a bit much but still respect and honor your parents.

I did enjoy the tender moments between Archie and Gloria. Those moments would bring me to tears everytime because you can see there was genuine love between Carroll O'Connor and Sally Struthers like they were father and daughter in real life.

I never thought Sally Struthers acting was terrible. There was one time when she yelled at Edith and said something like she was a zero, and even if she were ten times the woman she was 10x0 still equals zero. I'd say her acting was superb, if her portrayal of Gloria should emit such emotion from the board members :)

In the episode "Edith's Night Out", Archie does threaten to spank Gloria for twisting his ear.

When Gloria pulled Archies chest hairs that hurt. Having a daughter of my own I can relate to Gloria being "daddy's girl". Also, I thought Sally Struthers was a very good actress and thought all 4 did an excellent job. I wonder if Rob or Sally were nominated for Emmy's?

Archie's father was an abusive bigot so Archie was not going to hit her even if she would have had it coming.

To all the people here who are griping about how Archie let Gloria physically abuse him without doing anything about it. I think you all need to read life's playbook again. One of the rules in living in our civilized society is that you DO NOT hit women. Short of them drawing blood, or coming at you with a weapon, we men must tolerate their pinching and hair-pulling and other childish physical annoyances because if we were to do to them what they do to us, we would be arrested and jailed. Period. End of story. Tell it to the judge (Oh, that's right - the Judge doesn't wanna hear how you hit a woman either.)

Spanking her butt when she was a kid wouldn't have been the same thing, and I think both Archie and Edith would have thought spanking was fine. I think Archie just spoiled her so much as a kid that she got used to getting what she wanted and knew what she had to do to get it. Archie very rarely denied Gloria anything. She got her way 99% of the time. I can see her getting spanking on rare occasions as a kid, but not for whining and/or hurting Archie into giving her what she wanted. I think she would have only been spanked for what Archie would have considered serious things such as putting herself in danger, i.e. running into the road, playing with matches, etc.

*Spanking a kid and knocking around a woman are NOT the same thing.* I think it boils down to Archie simply not wanting to discipline his "little goil".

Two tears ago a neighbor of mine got in serious trouble with the Children's Welfare Agency for swatting her 7yr old daughter on the bottom. This wouldn't be so unusual except the child went ballistic, yelling, screaming, crying at the top of her lungs while snot ran down her cheeks and she even did the shortness of breath thing. Just from a swat on the backside! Adults stepped in, reprimanded the mother; of course she was all "This is MY child, you all should mind your own business! That statement prompted three calls to the Child Welfare Agencies. . .and the rest is parental guidance history. So perhaps Gloria was never physically punished as a child to avoid being (even temporarily) removed from the family.

Gloria was growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. No way that Child Welfare would have taken her from Archie and Edith just because of a swat on the behind. In fact, back in those days if Child Welfare had seen how Gloria acted they probably would have told Archie and Edith to spank her good.

I thought she was fine as Gloria. Sometimes Gloria would be annoying, or whiny or unreasonable. If that causes us, the viewers, to feel annoyed by her, then that to me says she portrayed that role very well. The four of them were magical together. Truly "lightning in a bottle" from 1970- 1975. Once Mike & Gloria moved out, the show was not quite the same. And once they moved away to California, that was really the end. Yes there was one last season with Stephanie, but the entire dynamic of the show had changed by then. Sally Struthers as Gloria is far better than pretty much everything that the SitCom world has to offer today.

I watched an episode of "Friends" recently. I had never seen it or watched it when it was originally on. I watched the entire episode and I didn't even chuckle or smile. With "AITF", even though I know what's coming, I STILL laugh!

Just yesterday, an episode I watched from my DVD collection had Sally, as Gloria, walking kind of slow and odd leaving the house. Archie asked what she was doing and she replied "I'm just shuffling on out Daddy...". Good stuff to me!

Well apparently she didn't hurt him that bad, and she was "Daddy's lil' goil " LOL

Sally looks like she could be Carroll O'Connor's daughter. The blue eyes, they look very much alike in the eyes. I think she was a good choice for Gloria.

Yes Gloria is a little mean. She is the character in the show who is the most like Archie. She is not a racist but can be mean and petty similar to her father. She was cast because she could be Carrolls daughter.
