View Full Version : Introduce your fave obscure or semi-obscure bands to the peeps at SO!!!
Mikado 04-22-2006, 03:25 PM Have an obscure band you really love and which you would like to "Spread the word " about? Well, here's your chance!!!!
I'll start with my fave band , Shonen Knife:
In Osaka Japan, the biggest trend is girl punk bands, and of these, one stands out as the model for the rest, Shonen Knife. Sometimes known as " The Ramones of Japan" SK is actually a band willing to try anything from punk to blues, ballads and even hard rock. Best known for "girly" songs like Ice cream city and Cookie day, the Knife can also outrock most any girl rock band.....
Their best album is "Let's Knife" released back when they were with Virgin records...however, due to some copywrite probs, its very hard to find unless you buy it used.
SK is composed of Naoko Yamano( lead guitar and vocals ), her younger sister Atsuko ( Bass , keyboard , synth ) and newest member Etsuko Nakanishi ( drums ).... Atsuko was formerly the drummer , but changed to bass when former bassist Michie Nakatani was either (according to various sources i read ) A) fired B) left with the bands blessing to marry and have a baby C) left on her own, but wasnt exactly missed by the Yamano sisters who were tired of her complaining about not getting enough credit on the songs< Anyone know the truth?
Shonen Knife is back with their newest Album " Genki Shock" and are slated to tour North Amer. again this coming fall!!
Mikado 04-23-2006, 09:01 PM Hmm No one besides me likes obscure bands?? I have a hard time believing that @_@ There must be SOMEONE on this site who has an obscure band to talk about :(
Nighthawk76 04-23-2006, 10:52 PM The Waitresses: A New Wave pop band that released three albums during the early 1980's (two in 1982 and one in 1983). Their only hit was the 1982 single "I Know What Boys Like". They also recorded the holiday song "Christmas Wraping" and the theme song for the CBS sitcom Square Pegs (they also appeared in the pilot). The band broke up in 1984 and lead singer Patty Donahue died from cancer in 1996.
Mikado 04-23-2006, 11:01 PM oh yeah i remember that what boys like song :)....and that their lead singer died of cancer :(

Mikado 04-25-2006, 05:19 AM Cools Seventies....why dont you pick one ( or two ) of your bands and do a little bio thingy ( the way DAX and I did ) ? Give us a peek at why you like, say, the Pandoras. ( great name, btw ) :)
Mikado 11-18-2007, 08:31 PM What do you get when you take 3 sexy Japanese girls "into" English punk music add a couple of guys to play bass and drums, and bring them to a boil in London? You get the UK-based Japanese punk band MIKABOMB, the creation of Osaka's Mika Handa, who dreamed of going to the birthplace of punk, and forming her own band. Mikabomb has toured the USA and seemed on the verge of "breaking out" when Drummer Ergi develloped septicaemia. He survived a week-long, near-fatal coma, but had both his legs amputated below the knee; since that time, the band seems to be in limbo. It's a shame cause this is my second fave J-punk band after Shonen Knife (Mikabomb sings most of its songs in English, btw)

I remember Wendy O Williams.....covering her privates with Band-aids.
I was so sad when i heard about her suicide; its a shame she gave up....with the huge punk revival we're having now, chances are shed be practically an icon now, and a huge success! :rip:
Mikado 11-19-2007, 06:43 PM Shonen Knife is touring again, and will be in Buffalo on Wed......Im hoping to make it there! :woohoo:

Yeah, she's definitely a personality that will forever be missed. I was looking for that video of her arguing with Mrs. Fields. I think YouTube deleted it.
Nighthawk76 11-25-2007, 12:45 AM I still pick The Waitresses. I think that they were a terrific New Wave pop band and I'm sorry that they never became popular.
