In the loss department, there's....

Nicholas Colasanto - Coach on Cheers. The poor man was so ill during the end and looked gaunt. :(

Patricia Heaton - Debra on Everybody Loves Raymond. When you watch earlier seasons, she's heavier. Not fat at all, but she got thinner as time went on.

In the gained department, there's...

Delta Burke on Designing Women. She caught a lot of heat for her weight gain.

Kirstie Alley on Cheers gained some weight on Cheers, but not too much. In the beginning, she's dressed in tight fitting clothes. The last couple of seasons, she's always in a blazer or loose clothing.

it could be because he is older, but Anson Williams looks a little more chunky by the last season on Happy Days.

Jason Alexander on Seinfeld gained a few pounds.

Sara Rue on Less than Perfect lost a lot of weight. It is a shame because she looked a lot better with a few extra pounds on her.

Holly Marie Combs on Charmed has gained some weight, most of it because she had a baby at the end of season 6 in real life. She looked heavier for most of season 7 but now during season 8 she looks slimmer

Actually, before Fred "Rerun" Berry died in 2003, he actually did drop a ton of weight, b/c he was on Weakest Link and I Love the 70s and looked a lot thiiner than used to be.

The most obviously example, Roseanne. She was big in the first few seasons and then slowly lost weight. She looks pretty good by the last season.

John Goodman was also biggish in the beginning, then lost some weight going into the 5th season, but then ballooned again by the end. It's really sad to see him now because he's gained so much weight... he was on Ellen a month ago or so. Unless he takes some serious measures to lose some pounds, I fear he doesn't have much time left.

Dave Foley (NewsRadio) - He's small and thin for the first three seasons. But around the end of season four and all of season five, he put on the pounds. I wouldn't consider him "A Fat Man" but there it is definitly noticeable.

Freddie Prinze (Chico and the Man) - Unfortunatly, his weight loss was due to drugs.

Josh Peck (Drake & Josh) - Hey, my sister likes this show. But his weight loss is very noticable.

Screech (SBTB: The New Class) - He put on a few pounds as the show went on.

That's for sure. I've been watching the early seasons of Roseanne, and I can't believe how big she was....then she looks good after a while. One of Roseanne's problems is that she really puts on weight in her face, so when she's overweight, her face packs it on too.

Soleil Moon Frye started to lose weight somewhere mid episodes of Punky Brewster(1st season) because she started to lose all that baby fat while in the pilot three part episode, she was a little chubby girl.

Gary Coleman somewhere I think in the 3rd Season of Diff'rent Strokes started to gradually lose weight by every episode.

Full House own Candance Cameron lost weight by the 4th or 5th Season.

Will and Grace Fanatic
01-23-2007, 04:50 PM
Debra Messing from Will and Grace gained some weight in a few later seasons. but that was due to her pregnancy. If you look at her in the face you can see she is chubbier. But she lost the weight as well.

Weight Lost:
Julie Kavner (Brenda Morgenstern)
George Lopez
John Goodman (Dan Conner)
Charlotte Rae (Edna Garrett)
Loretta Swit (Margaret Houlihan)

Didn't John Amos & Esther Rolle both get slimmer?

Weight Gain:
Robin Williams (Mork)
Gavin MacLeod (Merrill Stubing)
Katherine MacGregor (Harriet Olson)

Jerry Mathers (Beaver)-he grew up but got chubby

As far as "husky" characters, I can't keep track if they lost or gained. Sometimes their weight fluctuated:

Jackie Gleason (Ralph Kramden)
Carroll O'Connor (Archie Bunker)
Ernest Borgnine (Quinton McHale)
George Wendt (Norm Peterson)
Ed Asner (Lou Grant)
Nell Carter
Isabel Sanford (Louise Jefferson)
Shirley Hemphill (Shirley Wilson)

Isabel Sanford (The Jeffersons)
during season 1 she was overweight(Chunky Might Be Better) then during seaon 2 and 3 she lost some weight. and then in late season 4 or early season 5 she began to gain some of her weight back and her face got chunky by around season 10 and season 11.
if you watch episodes from season 1 and season 3 you can tell she lost weight between those 2 seasons .
then if watch episodes from season 4 and 5 then in season 9,10,11 you can tell she Gained Weight.

Dolph Sweet - like Nicolas Colasanto on Cheers, Dolph Sweet also began getting thinner before he died on Gimme a Break.

Ironically, 1985 was a big year where a lot of stars were on their deathbeds in the middle of a show's run.

Same went for:
Sidney Clute - Cagney and Lacey: he looked a skeleton by '85.
Selma Diamond - Night Court

Mackenzie Phillips of One Day At A Time lost a quite a bit of weight during her two stints on that show. Since she was a pretty tall and gangly girl to begin with, it was obvious something was wrong. Happily, she seems to be living a full, clean and happy life now. :)

I didn't understand that one because Tracey Gold was not overweight but the way the character was written as though she had a weight problem and the fat jokes got worse. Unfortunately, her feelings were hurt because of that. It is great that Tracey is still with us and healthy.

Isabel Sanford, The Jeffersons, gained a lot of weight during the show and the clothes she wore on there was not flattering to her and I am referring to her tops or dresses that showed a lot of cleavage. It was too much for a woman her built.

Bob Saget, Full House, put some muscle on during the show and filled out during the last three seasons. He was thin as a rail during the first two and a half seasons of the show.

Phylicia Rashad was thin when the Cosby Show first came but after she had the baby during the third season it looked as though she did not get all the pregnancy weight off.

Isabel Sanford gained Alot Of Weight Especially In The Middle Years Of The Show.
Season 1 Starting Size She Was Overweight(Not Fat But Overweight)
Beginning Of Season 2 She started to lose a Little(Not Much) weight.
Beginning Season 3 She Lost A Bit More Weight
Middle To End Of Season 3 Isabel Sanford Was At Her Thinnest and you could tell she lost some weight.
Beginning To Middle Season 4 She Was The Same As At The End Of Season 3.
End Of Season 4 She Slow Put About 3 Or 4 Pounds Back on.
Season 5 Gained A Bit Of Her Weight back.
Season 6 Stuck A Bit More Weight on You Can See A Little Difference At The Beginning And End Of Season 6.
Beginning to middle Season 7 She Was Still the same As The End Of Season 6.
Middle To End Season 7 You Can Tell She Put A Few More Pounds On.
Season 8 She gained Some More Weight As The Season Went On.
Season 9 Pretty Much The Same As Season 9 But She did Put on A couple of pounds And As The Season Went On Her Face Got More Puffed.
Season 10 She Gained Some more Weight And Her Face was a Bit Puffed she Looked Alot Different Then The beginning Of Season 1(Of Course Her Age Had A Bit To Do With It)
Season 11 She Was Pretty much The Same But gained A Couple Of Pounds And That Was It.

She was overweight by Hollywood standards.
It was tragic because of the way the show wrote Carol as being nerdy, smart and with a slight (beyond my comprehension) weight problem. It would had been good if they wrote her as being nerdy and smart and OK to be that. She did not succumb to peer pressure she was quite the academic kind. She liked guys but many were intimidated because of her smarts.

The most infamous examples are Kirstie Alley on Cheers and Veronica's Closet, Delta Burke on Designing Women, Matthew Perry on Friends, and Matt Le Blanc on Friends

but i'd also like to add:

Judith Light on Who's The Boss?

Megan Mullaly on Will & Grace (look at the first season and the last season and you'll understand)...

Lisa Whelchel on The Facts Of Life (she got really fat during the 6th or 7th season)

and as sad as it was, Tracey Gold on Growing Pains, she definetly struggled with her weight, of course we later found out she had an eating disorder, but still it qualfied

Tiffanie Amber Thissen on B.H. 90210 got pretty heavy by the time Val left the show, ESPECIALLY compared to her weight on Saved By The Bell.. the girl got really fat... it got to a point i didn't want to look at her anymore.

He lost a lot a weight before he died.

If you ever watched the former child stars' editions of the Weakest Link and see Fred "Rerun" Berry on there, you'll plainly see that he really DID lose a lot of weight before he died.

It's also kind of ironic that all of the Big People from "What's Happening!!" are no longer with us.

1st, Mama (Mabel King) died
then a month and/or year later, Shirley (Hemphill) died.
Years after that, Rerun Berry died.

The network and studio bothered her about her weight, pretty much from the beginning of the show....But Candace told them, that's who she is, and she's not going to lose weight, just because they told her too....And rightfully so. Candace was, and still is beautiful.

Melissa Joan Hart, of "Sabrina The Teenage Witch", was another one who battled weight through her shows` run (and like Candace, people made it their business to tell Melissa to knock off a few. She did at first, but then she ignored it, and just went with the way she looked).

Raven Symone gradually gained weight during every season on her sitcom, "That's So Raven."

Sarah Michelle Gellar was a little chunky during the first season of "Buffy."

John Goodman had to lose weight for his role as Babe Ruth. That's why he shrunk down in the earlier seasons.

Yes she did lose a tremendous amount of weight between season 5 and 6. But also starting in mid season 4- mid season 5 she gained a lot of weight (because she was pregant!) and they didn't even bother hiding the fact that she was pregnant, even though Barbra Jean was not.

Another person is Scarlett Pomers. She lost a real lot of weight in season 4, and left after two episodes in season 5 because it was revealed she had an eating problem. When she returned in season 6, she looks like she put on a little weight (which is good!)

And I think JoAnna Garcia may have lost a little weight. Her face looks a little skinner after season 1.

Eric Allan Kramer lost weight/shaped up during the third season of Good Luck Charlie and they even wrote in Bob Duncan's weight loss.

I don't know if this counts, but Jonathan Frakes noticeably put on weight when he reprised his role as Commander William Riker in the last episode of Star Trek: Enterprise ("These Are the Voyages"). He's age and weight wouldn't really be much of a concern had it not been the fact that he (and Marina Sirtis' Counselor Deanna Troi) were supposedly playing younger versions of themselves from 11 years prior (their scenes take place during the Season 7 Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Pegasus").

Jean Smart on Designing Women, but I think she may have been pregnant IRL.

Alison Sweeney from Days of Our Lives. Apparently there was an intervention in the late 90's/early 2000's and someone gave her a note that said "Alison, we love you, please lose weight." Which was ridiculous. I think she had also had a baby at the time.

Jo Marie Payton Noble playing Harriette on Family Matters she gained a lot of weight during the show's 3rd season, in fact there was even a 4th Season episode where her weight gain was written into the storyline!

Henry Winkler on Happy Days during the later years by the time Richie left the show he had noticeably gained some weight. I wouldn't say he was fat, but he just was no longer this rail thin guy.

Rob Reiner Mike "Meathead" on All in the Family. He seemed to put on weight during his last few seasons on All in the Family. I'd say 1975-1978

David from Sesame Street. He was on the show from 1971-1989 but noticeably gained weight from 1984-1989. He died in 1990.

Many of the stars had long series so they age as the show goes on. No body is thin as teenager unless they are a teenager. Your body changes. Most people you mentioned I didn't really notice. Now if you say yeah Andy Griffith looked a little more stocky in Matlock than Andy Griffith show, I would say you are right. I saw him through the years and age made him look shorter.

The only two that I can think of are Melissa Peterman (Barbara Jean) from Reba and Jane Leeves (Daphne) from Frasier. Of course, she was pregnant in real life and they just said that she was eating everything in sight and gaining weight. Then when she returns from the "spa for fat people", Niles tells Roz that Daphne lost 9 lbs. and 12 oz. (the actual weight of her baby)!

Kirstie Alley on Cheers gained some weight on Cheers, but not too much. In the beginning, she's dressed in tight fitting clothes. The last couple of seasons, she's always in a blazer or loose clothing.
After Cheers, she piled on the pounds. Even on her later 2 shows.

It's been awhile since I've seen Mr. Belvedere, but from what I remember, Ilene Graff (the mom) looked a bit heavier in the first season (which was only 7 episodes). After that, she looked like she lost weight.

If this was said or not, but it looked like towards the end of the series Roseanne herself had her own weight go up and down quite a bit in her own right too.

Another one.

During the last season or so of Pee-Wee's Playhouse, the star of the show, Paul Reubens, looked like (at least to me) he gained a little weight. He didn't look quite as thin as he did in the first couple of seasons.

William Shatner during Star Trek. You could tell if he was on the heavy side if they had him in the v-necked wrap-top. ;)

Also, Henry Winkler in the last few seasons of Happy Days. Fonzie started wearing a more slimming black T shirt.

I remember reading an interview Alison gave when she had first lost weight (late 90s) and she said it was her fiance who noticed that she was always complaining about her weight, he loved her the way she was but told her that if her weight bothered her then she should just do something about it. She talked about eliminating sugar from her diet and the weight coming off fast. Maybe the note and intervention came later.

First season of Starsky and Hutch David Soul was very thin but by the fourth season it looked like he had gained about 20 lbs. I think he had some medical problem (surgery for a bad back) that led to him gaining the weight because he had to be less active. Paul Michael Glaser was average weight in the beginning and got thinner and buff by the third season.

I always loved the show Designing Women and it made me so darn mad when I heard how they treated Delta Burke when she gained weight, she's still a beautiful woman. Hollywood needs to back off people that aren't as thin as toothpicks.

Seconded!

:)
I'm just sick of them being so judgmental. People die from eating disorders everyday. I still remember a girl I went to college with and I wonder if she is still alive. Some idiot in a newspaper article put down Karen Carpenter and she ended up dying because she was so concerned about what others thought of her. Words do hurt and they have enormous power. We should use them to support and inspire not destroy.

It's a health concern. It's not healthy to be overweight.

You are correct but some people do have health issues that cause weight gain and others simply struggle even though they eat little.
I work as a nurse in the hospital and I can tell you that prednisone is a big one that causes people to gain. These days, a lot of people use that drug.

About 70% of people in the United States are overweight and, in a cruel catch-22, many of the drugs used to treat obesity-linked conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and depression can themselves cause weight gain.

The point is, it is not up to Hollywood or us or critics to pass judgment. It is also not healthy to be too thin but many are these days. My sister has problems with her health and can't seem to gain any weight. Her OB/GYN told her if she'll put on a little weight she might actually get healthy enough to get pregnant and she has tried.

I live by the old saying 'Don't judge a man till you walk a mile in his shoes'.

I personally think we should learn to have a little more compassion and be more tolerant.
