LOS ANGELES - This time, it was Vanna White's turn to spell out a name - her own.

The longtime letter-turner on "Wheel of Fortune" was all smiles Thursday as she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

"I remember my parents telling me at the age of 10, you can do anything you want. Dad we did it!" said White, 49, who debuted as host Pat Sajak's assistant in 1982.

Guests at the 2,309th star's unveiling included Sajak, "Wheel of Fortune" creator Merv Griffin, "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek and White's father.

"I picked her because she knew the whole alphabet," Griffin said. "She is America's sweetheart."

White grew up in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., studied to be a model and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.

She struck TV gold with "Wheel of Fortune," clapping and turning letters called out by contestants.

What I do not understand is why did she get a star? I mean hollywood will give anyone a star these days, vanna has done nothing to recieve a hollywood star.

I agree with you 100%, There's several people that have been awarded stars that I believe have done very little or nothing to deserve the honor including Queen Latifah, Ryan Seacrest, Debbie Boone, Nathan Lane, Bonnie Raitt, Abigail (Dear Abby) Van Buren, Freddie Fender etc... However, many well known & established entertainers have yet to receive a star including James Coburn, Robert Redford, Dennis Hopper, Robert Lansing Bill Bixby & Charles Lane who had a career spanning 6 decades & at 101 it's a crying shame that this beloved actor cannot get a star yet Ryan Seacrest can, Go figure.

The answer is simple, the celebrity must fill out an application. Once they fill out an application they must pay the fee to get a star. After that, they have their very own star on the Walk Of Fame. It is not a selection process by some executive board. If you have the money and are willing to pay, you have a star.

That's not entirely correct, A person can be nominated by anyone so long as they have the $15,000 fee. There is in fact a selection commitee that meets each year to decide who's going to receive a star. Just because someone has the money, that's no guarantee they'll get a star. It's highly unlikely that the names I've mentioned along with Clint Eastwood & Mel Gibson haven't been nominated by someone. I know of one group that has been trying for years to get a posthumous star for Ross Martin but every year, he's passed up for someone else. I will say this however, While your answer isn't entirely correct, there is an element of truth to it. Personally, I believe that anyone that receives a star should be awarded one for their contributions to the entertainment industry not because they have the money to buy one.
