I absolutely HATE my social studies teacher. I mean, who really cares about American History? I don't. I mean, learning some of it I can understand. But when is it REALLY gonna help me to know that we didn't even know what the darn border of the Lousiana Territory is? It won't help me, now will it? And now, he gives us a take home test. Identify the causes and effects of westward expansion. Okay, that part was rather simple. But then we had to create (not just label, we had to actually make it) a freakin' map of the US west of the Mississippi, showing all 7 of the territories/purchases we had and then write an essay explaining how they became American property. And me, being the overachiever, has four pages on that while everyone else will probably only have 2. Now that I'm done, I'll leave you now so you can make fun of the imbecile talking about her eighth grade American history class as if you care....

I agree. Its not like theyll ask us what year Abrham Lincholn was born on our job applications. LOL.

I'm a history/poli sci major so why don't I give you a few reasons history is important!

1. Being able to relate something that happened today back in time. Why was the China spy plane such a big deal? Why is the Balkans such a volatile area?

2. Connect events in time. How did the Treaty of Versailles (WWI treaty) trigger the Great Depression (it was a world depression, not just in the US), and then the rise of Hitler? How did the work of philosophers such as Nietsche help play into Hitler's "grand scheme".

3. It is nice when you're going somewhere to know where exactly you are headed. Hand drawing maps is not cool (there is a reason I waited until my last year of college is take my fine arts requirement!) but you need to be able to point something out on a map.

4. The ability to think critically. Yes, you are not going to be asked dates on a job interview (and I've had many college professors who had to double check a date because they weren't sure), but employers expect you to look beyond the face value and deeper into an issue. The study of history allows you to practice these skills.

I could probably think of some other reasons, but history is not all bad. If anything else, it reads like a good soap opera, especially European history. Now history majors don't exactly have a wide variety of options unless you want to teach (no way), but pared with something else, it's a wonderful tool. You will survive your history classes!!

How can you not like history class? Especially American History. That's my favorite subject of all time! Maybe it's because I had the coolest history teacher in eigth grade, yeah, I think that's why.

I agree history is very important. I was lucky. I had a very cool teacher, too. But let me just say this. Enjoy school while you're there because it'll be over before you know it. You will miss it. Sounds like I'm crazy for saying that but it's true.

like all my friends hate history and its the only class that i can stand and get into(even though it is my hardest class, i do the best in it) our teacher is really hard, but makes interesting so we dont fall asleep unlike english...(thats a whole different story)

History was never one of my favorite subjects either. I know that you don't want to hear this, but 10 years from now, you may find yourself wishing that you paid closer attention or tried a little harder. I laughed when people said things like that to me, but here I am, 10 years later, wishing that I understood the history prior to 1900 a little bit beter.

Leslie - that's all fine and dandy, but like I said, there are some things we DO need to learn, but then again... some things are so irrelevent

Coily - I pay attention! Really, I do. I'm actually his best student and have been all year. Right now I have 112%. It's just... it's so damn BORING.

As for those of you who said you had a cool history teacher, you are so lucky. And those of you who said you loved history and it was the only class you could stand.. well, it may be my best subject but I still can't stand it. I'd much rather be in English or math. See, those are subjects I understand and (odd as this may seem) actually enjoy. Math is fun. Much better than history.

LoL! I'm sorry, but it is! I mean, it's just so easy... Sure, I get better grades in history, but that's just because of extra credit. Math is just simple, logical thinking. Well, so far it's been. I'm in Algebra I right now.... maybe Geometry and Algebra II are different. But for right now, I like math.

Math, I don't know about that one. But I'll agree with you about English. My favorite subject but be prepared to see English start to go downhill in 11th and 12th grade. You'll start to learn about the Medieval time period, the Renaissance, Antigone, Oedipus and all of those fun subjects. It turns into history at times but I guess it all depends what teacher you get. I got 2 really good teachers those years but they were the toughest ones.

oh great, madness. Well, actually I dunno... we only have set curriculums through 11th grade. Twelfth grade we just choose an English elective. Since I plan on taking Journalism I in 10th grade, and J II in 11th, then I'll probably take J III in 12th. Something tells me we won't study medeival times in there...but you really never know.

I hope you don't have to. You're lucky you get a choice. We were required to take either plain English 12 or English 12 honors.

Well, our school system is a little screwy. All the ninth graders go to one school. There, we can only take English 91 (regular), English 92 (slower) Or English 9 Honors (Which I got accepted to! Yay!). No English electives. Tenth through twelfth we go to one of the two high schools. In tenth and eleventh, we can take english electives, but they don't count as an english credit. There is no English 12, we just get one full credit of electives. It's screwy, I wish they'd justhave a stupid english 12.

but anyway... I love english. But this year I was in accelerated so it was harder... which means i might not WANT to be in honors... but once you drop out of an honors course you can't get back in... and I don't want to take that chance... so, looks like for the next four years i will be totally stressing myself out.

That does sound screwy! Good luck with honors. I could've taken it but I chose the easy route. I regret it at times but I'm thankful I went the way I did. A lot of the kids in the honors class annoyed me--they always thought they were superior. They were in English but they always bragged about it. And the people I had in my classes were cool so I was happy. English 12 for me was taking honors anyway though with the teacher I had! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/cool.gif

Word, Madness.... I was in the exact same boat, and I decided not to go the AP route. I had a reputation to maintain. I couldn't suddenly show up in the smart kids class! I think that the regular teacher was way better anyway. We've been having a banned book discussion over on the FOL board, and I read most of my favorite banned books in regular English 12. The kids in AP just read Lord of the Flies, Macbeth, and Hamelet. I read all those plus Catch-22, Slaughterhouse Five, Catcher in the Rye, Merry Wives of Windsor, and Taming of the Shrew (my favorite Shakespeare play). I remember reading a couple of others too, but they were for extra credit.
