Is it safe to store DVDs on spindles (the ones you buy the blanks on?)
I talked to a Customer Service rep at TDK and he said not a good idea,
that the bottom DVDs sometimes warp from the weight....When I mentioned that is strange that they would sell them on the spindles he said they
don't stay on the spindles very long.....

Any opinions? Some of my "Long Term Storage" disc holders have stuck
to the DVDs and I don't want that to happen again so thought I'd try the
spindles but that sounds iffy.

they sent on spindles a long time from factory to warehouse to stores to u

i never heard about that before

i usually store most sets in sleeves

but keep Bigger sets on spindles to save space :wave:

I was told long ago to ship on spindles is ok-
short term storage is ok-

but for long term storage it could effect the grooves/playability

Then again I was told that, as he pointed out binders on sale and white sleeves :)


I suggest the white sleeves myself, flip and pile methods- you can get them extremely cheap at areas like SuperMediaStore

Last deal they had was 1000 sleeves for 18.99

Thanks guys! Are you talking about the sleeves that you mail in? Paper with a little plastic window or whatever it is....if so, some of mine stuck to the top of the DVDs...and I keep them stored at the recommended temp....What's the "flip and pile" method? Sorry, I'm not sure what this means....THANKS!

I've stored some on spindles that hold 100 discs. IMO, it's kind of a PITA to get one from the bottom. So I'm moving away from that method.

I recommend these CD mesh storage tubs. You can find them at Staples and Walmart. They can be used with the sleeve envelopes. They can hold between 100-120 discs in sleeves.

They are stackable, and you can easily create a filing system with them.


When I shifted from spindles to this, it's saved me so much time looking for things - not to mention how organized you will be.

Binders are nice too

Here is a link- you can pick up Binder pages here for like 20.00 for gosh a lot of sotrage.
each PAGE, holds 8 discs. has a window you can see through
then put the pages on a binder- which you can buy at walmart ofr 1 a piece or at sams club here they are 7 for 4.99

Each binder holds like 50 pages? So thats 400 discs PER binder.
Store them by show, by genre, by alphabetical order- whatever you want.
When you need a show, just flip through the binder to get what you want-
Going somewhere, just grab the binder.

And basically it comes to 19 cents per page- becuase ground shipping right now is free.
SO you can store 8 discs permanently for 20 cents -can't beat that really.

Its the Savage Method.

Like i said, Flip and Look then put in on your shelf. they are vertical so no weight is on the disc-
and you can fit like 10 binders per SHELF on a bookcase.
SO thats 4000 dvds per shelf- to me thats organization to the fullest.

I never knew that about storing DVD's on spindles, so good thing I never do that. I have a question though. I don't like the white paper sleeves for long-time storage because I feel that the discs aren't "protected" enough. What about the actual thin clear jewel cd cases? They can usually be found at Wal Mart at 100 for 20 bucks or something like that.

Anyway, I store all my DVD's in big binders. I have like 7 or 8 of those enormous ones and somehow managed to fill them all.

That way incase of a fire, I can easily carry them to safety with me (I'm only half joking. I think)

I've been told that you should NOT use CD cases for DVDs and I don't remember exactly how it was explained but something about that circular
piece in the middle doesn't protect a DVD properly when designed for a CD. I'm sure someone will know how to explain it correctly but bottom line,
they aren't made for DVDs.....

I'll have to disagree with that. I store all my DVDs in slim disc case in a file cabinet. It sure solved a l ot of my problems when I tried store them other way. The middle??? CD and DVDs are almost identical in shape and size.

The issue with the middle is that that is where the DVD is weakest when it comes to the "sandwich" of the two discs and the dye. CD cases are rougher (mainly because this isn't something people have to worry about when storing CDs) on this and can cause the DVD to split into two halves faster than DVD cases but it all depends on the case. I just threw out a bunch of DVD cases cause they were causing the dvds to start to split. Paper sleeves or binders are deffinitely the best way to go.

DVDs splitting?? I've never seen that and I have DVDs I've had four & five years. The cheaper discs I could may be see that happening, but the ring is the toughest part of a DVD. With paper sleeves and binders you still have more contact points on a disc. I'll stick to my slim disc CD/DVD cases stored in my file cabinet upright in a row.
