View Full Version : Was it really wrong to bring Big Earl and Little Earl to the show itself?
88survivor 04-18-2006, 12:43 PM One character I could do without was Big Earl. Big Earl was such a bastard. I couldn't understand why Rerun or Raj would put up with his BS all the time. It has to be Big Earl, no doubt. They were times where I really wanted to strangle him.
everett552 04-18-2006, 01:00 PM  What was the point in introducing the characters to the show in the first place? If anything, that was the last nail driven into the coffin that killed its run on the air. I understand what the writers and producers were trying to do, but introducing new and unnecessary characters does not always help improve ratings.

I didn;t like how Big Earl falsely accused them of stealing. I think they could have introduced him a different way, rather than trying to put the 3 main characters in jail-lol
88survivor 04-18-2006, 06:37 PM Me, too. Big Earl was just.....errgh....I want to wring his neck because I couldn't see these two doing something that illegal. I mean, yes, they did a couple of illegal things in the 1st and 2nd seasons, but always thought them to be good at heart. I don't know if this makes any sense at all, but that is how I see them to be. Sorry if that doesn't makes sense at all...but you know.
TVFactFan 04-18-2006, 07:08 PM I don't why they felt the need to ADD characters because of only ONE actress, MABEL KING, leaving the show. All they had to do was expand the roles of the characters already on the show. Like showing rerun's mother-lol
Brian Damage 04-18-2006, 07:08 PM The whole Little Earl obsession with Dee was nausiating. :barf:

Yea it would have been nice to see Rerun or Dwayne's family.
TVFactFan 04-18-2006, 07:13 PM Yea it would have been nice to see Rerun or Dwayne's family.
We saw Dwayne's parents in season 2. We never saw Rerun's parents. Only relative of Rerun's we saw was his Sister

What about his brother Dewey? Didn't he ask Shirley out one time?

I just assumed they were dead.

Oh yeah, that's right.
CindyRoxiesLair2006 04-18-2006, 08:26 PM ANYWAY...
Back to the subject at hand here, I agree that the Barnetts were highly irritating characters during the 3rd season of WH.
I don't blame Shirley for putting Big Earl in his place while they were all at the police station... even though it was funny in her telling him, "Look, that's not the question. The question HERE is, "Do YOU know who I am?" :p

88survivor 04-18-2006, 08:26 PM Good point. BTW, everytime I see when Little Earl's crushes on Dee, it almost looks like Dee is rolling her eyes as if couldn't believe the fact that she was putting up with a measly five year-old. And this happens sometimes or most of the time. She would have a look of disbelief and say her lines, trying not to laugh because of how he said the lines that were ridiculous.

The answer to that is YES!!!
TVFactFan 04-18-2006, 11:41 PM Or a better question would be-"was it wrong to decrease the role of Mabel? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-LOL

Very wrong, it killed the show.
88survivor 04-19-2006, 01:22 AM Mabel's character was mentioned, but not seen right....? Am I wrong on this or is just my imagination?

Solomon would have liked that...but no, she was the mother on the show. She eventually left the show. The actress was under the impression the show would revolve around her and her kids. Instead, she was pushed aside for the guys instead. Yes, her leaving the show KILLED IT. It wasn't the same after that. Rerun being more of a dork instead of being funny, Raj maturing waaaaaay to fast, Dee not really being a part of it as much, and those God-awful characters of Big Earl and little Earl. My God, what were the producers and writers thinking??? what were they smoking????:(
comedyfreak 04-19-2006, 06:46 AM I believe she had already left the show by the third season.
88survivor 04-19-2006, 12:07 PM Wow...she did? They never brought her back to What's Happening Now?, right?
But I always thought she was having fun being a part of the show. Guess I was wrong... I like the part where she thinks the gang is screwing the girl when in fact it was all about the puppies.

I agree totally with that as well, simply because that scenario was part of the main issue that had to deal with the overall "dwindling" of WH as a sitcom.

Mr. Television 04-19-2006, 06:55 PM I think some of the worst episodes of WH happened after Mabel left the show.Roger had nobody to answer to anymore and Dee wasn't as funny without her mama to put her in her place. Big Earl and Little Earl were irratating characters and I won't even mention THe Snake.
Fred G. Sanford 04-21-2006, 12:06 AM Big Earl and Little Earl were irratating characters and I won't even mention THe Snake.
I preferred The Snake better than Big and Little Earl.

The third season seemed like the show lost its purpose. I think the writers should have given Dee some high school friends and they could have started hanging out at the soda shop. They should have also developed more storylines with Raj and Rerun in college such as cramming for a test, pledging a fraternity or running for SGA. The Snake could have been the colliegate version of Dwayne. Or, they could have dropped Dee after the second season and focused more on the boys college life.
More should have been done with Mabel King's character. It seemed like alot of her lines were given to Dee instead.
88survivor 04-24-2006, 11:35 PM That, too. Mabel should have a bigger part, agree, but at least some of her movements and facial expression make up for the character herself. I especially love when Dee tells the wrong things and Mabel's facial expression change about the story of Raj and the girl.

It was Rerun's antics that ended the show, wanting more money. Producers screwed up by reducer Mabel's role and it did seem like they gave Dee her lines. That's also why Mabel wanted out of the show, especially the episode where Dee got this old man to open up and reconcile with his daughter.
Imo, the last show of the second season was a good way to end the show. Having Raj move out and live in an apartment.
I also think they added Little Earl cause Dee was growing up and not that cute little kid anymore, that has been going on in TV for a long time. ie Oliver Brady Bunch, Tony adopting the little boy on Who's the Boss etc.

Maybe it was Fred Berry's antics that helped end the show but it was running out of gas by the end of the 3rd season anyway. It wouldn't have last much longer.

That's when you know a show jumps the shark when they add kids out of nowhere. Some shows like Married with Children that did that flopped and the kid was gone with no explanation by the end of the season. The same happened with What's Happening Now, with the adopted daughter; dropped with no explanation.
88survivor 04-25-2006, 09:35 AM I know that happens in T.V shows by adding new characters, but it is not always the same.
