View Full Version : Question for anyone who watched Saved by the Bell during it's original run on NBC
TVFactFan 04-18-2006, 10:06 AM For those of you who watched SBTB on NBC, was it hard for you to get into SBTB the New Class? I mean after watching one class for almost 5 years, it was no way that the new lcass would catch on. I think the new class would only be popular to viewers who didn't watch SBTB on NBC. I could never watch the New Classes at all.
Brian Damage 04-18-2006, 10:18 AM The New Class sucked.

Quoted for truth.
SBTB Geek 04-18-2006, 02:22 PM That could be the reason why I've always disliked The New Class with a passion.

TVFactFan 04-18-2006, 06:18 PM The fact that I graduated highschool and started college the same time as the SBTB characters, I couldn't get into the New Class because it would have been like going back to my old highschool to hang out-lol So I didn't want to get to know the new class
gidgetgrape 04-19-2006, 08:58 PM I tried to get into "The New Class" but they weren't as interesting (or as cute) to me as the original cast.
tv star collector 04-20-2006, 08:42 AM I don't think I saw ... THE NEW CLASS more than once or twice. Not especially
memorable for me. The original series was way better.

I never even tried to get into the New Class-lol.
Adamantium 04-20-2006, 05:00 PM In the fall of 1993, I was starting Sixth Grade. I've never thought "The New Class" was better than the original. However, I've liked it more. But liking somthing, isn't the same as saying it's a good show. Like I would never put it in my top 30 list of the Best Sitcoms of All-Time. However, I would put it in my list of my favorite sitcoms of all-time (way ahead of the original class).
I think the many cast changes, in a way, hurt the show. I mean there were four lead characters (Scott, Brian, Ryan, Tony). It's hard to keep track of everybody. Besides the four lead characters, which were already listed, here's the rest of the cast: Weasel, Tommy, Lindsay, Megan, Vicki, Rachel, Bobby, Maria, R.J., Eric, Nicky, Katie, Liz. By the fourth season, no one from the first season was around (except for Belding, of course). So in a way, it's like there were two seperate "New Class" series. I guess with the title "The New Class" meant they could change the cast every season, thus it would always be a "New Class." lol
I think "The New Class" pushed their episode's message in our face too much. I mean the character would actually say "I've learned I should never (The episode's message here) and then apologize." It was a formula. They nice teens would do something not nice, get caught, learn their lesson and apologize. Maria, started doing pot, became addicted and stopped all in one episode. And the ends of the episodes were all predictable. With all that said, though, I still enjoy the series, much more than the original.
I watched the original series in it's original run (for the most part). The first season of "The New Class" I enjoyed by thinking it was so stupid. I laughed at how they were each a rip-off of the past character. But then, I got to really like the show. And thanks to the DVDs, I can watch it any time I want.

That was the stupidest thing about the FIRST NEW CLASS. That they tried to make the characters similar to the class of 1993-lol Why not go in a different Direction?

I agree. And the news on the internet about why the cast was changed for season two was that the producers found the characters to be too similar to the originals. Couldn't they have figured that out in the beginning? Why'd it take them a season before realizing it? Plus in the first season, none of them (minus maybe Weasel and Megan) were good actors. They gave very poor performances. Tommy and Lindsay got better by their last season (the third). The acting definitely improved around season four.
barb1686 04-20-2006, 09:36 PM I tried to get into it....I really did, but I couldn't. I think now that I'm older I'd be more open-minded, but I still haven't tried to (and I don't have the DVDs). But what really irks me is that they re-used a lot of the same storylines, and the fact that Screech was extremely annoying in The New Class. When, and if, I ever have the money to splurge on whatever I will buy the dvds and attempt to enjoy it LOL

I think The New Class should have it's own board. Because it does seem that most fans of the original series HATE "The New Class" yet they have to tolerate all the threads and posts about "The New Class." I like both series, but I like discussing "The New Class" more and I hardly ever read posts about the original series.

Yeah, maybe we should ask TJ to create a sub-board within this one.

To answer Solomon's question: it was hard in the beginning to get into the New Class. I had a similar reaction to most people in terms of "why bother with a new show." I didn't like the first season of TNC but eventually got into it when there were some characters added/replaced and became a big fan. So it was hard in the beginning to get into it, but I got into it.
barb1686 04-21-2006, 11:44 AM Stupid people would still post here anyways LOL But yeah, they should have their own board because that show itself ran its own course - of 7 years. So yeah, get another board....then SBTB Geek can destroy threads of TNC. hehe
SBTB Geek 04-21-2006, 04:39 PM I was tempted to email TJ about this, but I don't think there is a big demand for a seperate board.
I honestly don't see many New Class related threads around, but then again, it could be that fans don't want to bother posting because they don't want to be bombarded with "New Class sucks!" comments every time they post.

Not true. Take a look at the most active threads on this board over the last year. Most all of them have been related to The New Class, and mostly by fans of TNC, even if it's just two or three people. We've been the most active posters on the SBTB board.

And that's because the NEW Class topics was a way to give the SBTB Board some life. What will be talked about on the New Class Board to give it life?_LOL

If there's a separate board for The New Class, me and Adam will keep it active. Trust me.

Yep-Yep. For me there's just more to talk about with "The New Class." I mean with all those many cast changes, we can have many discussions about that alone. Plus there are a couple other "New Class" fans but they don't post here as much anymore.

Can't say that I disagree.
You got us there.
TVFactFan 04-22-2006, 11:27 AM Was there a NEW CLASS every year after 1994? If so that was STUPID. Why not let viewers get to know a NEW set of students
Adamantium 04-22-2006, 07:01 PM Was there a NEW CLASS every year after 1994? If so that was STUPID. Why not let viewers get to know a NEW set of students
I agree with you. Season two had my favorite cast lineup (Brian, Bobby, Tommy, Lindsay, Megan & Rachel). However, in the first season, they were all sophomores. So the original New Class really only were able to do three years and that be it. When they changed the casts around, some of the new kids were not in the same grade and therefore were able to make the show go on longer. During seasons 4, 5 & 6 only two kids left and got replaced. So it got more stable starting with season four. However in the first three seasons, there were always three students who left at the end of each season and magically three new students replaced them the following season.
I don't mind a cast change (in fact, I kind of like it) but this show definitly went over board with cast changes.
I do the cast lineups alot, but here's another look at the cast.
Scott (Season 1)
Weasel (Season 1)
Tommy (Seasons 1, 2, 3)
Lindsay (Seasons 1, 2, 3)
Megan (Seasons 1, 2)
Vicki (Season 1)
Brian (Season 2)
Bobby (Season 2)
Rachel (Seasons 2, 3, 4)
Ryan (Seasons 3, 4, 5)
R.J. (Season 3)
Maria (Seasons 3, 4, 5, 6)
Eric (Seasons 4, 5, 6)
Nicky (Seasons 4, 5, 6)
Katie (Seasons 4, 5, 6)
Liz (Seasons 5, 6)
Tony (Season 6)
Belding was there for the whole show and Screech came in season two and stayed for the duration of the show.

No, he got WORSE!!!
Actually, there were a few times where he got serious and gave decent advice to the kids, but for the most part his character was just 100% clownish on TNC.

When the show was new, I always wondered why he was still playing Screech. Then I heard that he had some money issues with his father (I'm not sure what it is, maybe his dad spent all of his money). So this was probably the only acting job he could get.
What I didn't like was that in seasons 4, 5 & 6, Screech's voice got higher. What was funny (and weird) is that Screech actually had quite a few girlfriends in The New Class.

Were they NERDY Girls like Violet?-lol

No, they were all attractive. One of them was the actress who played Kimberly/The Pink Ranger in "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" and she was also in "Felicity."
That's what made it seem even more ridiculous. lol
