What do Mac Davis, John Denver and Neil Diamond have in common? They were
all song writers who later became singers. Mac Davis wrote "Memories" and "In
the Ghetto" for Elvis Presley; John Denver composed "Leaving on a Jet Plane"
(recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary); and Neil Diamond penned The Monkees' hit
"I'm a Believer." Any others?

Barry Manilow used to write jingles for commercials for a living. I'm not sure, but I think Willie Nelson started out as a songwriter.
