I think if he hadn't died we would have never seen those NY episodes, of course. I know that season 5 would not have happened the way it did, either. Well, some episodes, yeah, but I think Katie getting that job in San Francisco would have never happened. However, Jonathan would have peobably been the same way, as well as the other characters. We would have never seen Maggie, Martie, any of the NY cast, and probably no more Mama Maybelle.
For season 5, episodes would have probably been all different than the ones they originally made up, with the Chief still alive. Probably a love interest for the Chief would have come about in this season. I remember he liked Officer Dwyer when she dropped the charges of sexual harrassment on her. Nell probably would have went to college and got her psychology degree. The other characters would have still dealt with the same stuff as usual. Boys, school, stuff like that. We would have seen Katie's corner! We only saw it once in season 4, but I bet it would have been featured a lot more. I think Julie would have never gotten pregnant in season 5, as the Chief was still alive, and it would take away from him. JOEY WOULD HAVE JUST BEEN THERE TO ACT ALL CUTE AND STUFF AS USUAL.
For season 6, Sam would have gotten into a college near Glenlawn, and would have still lived at home. Nell would apply for a job as a school guidance counselor and get hired at a high school where Addy decides to teach at. THIS WOULD BE A MAJOR SHARK JUMPER FOR SURE. Now, Nell would be both at work and at her new job, as she was in the NY final season, but the show could have still worked. By the end of the season, Julie would finally be pregnant, and the Chief would have proposed to his new girlfriend. However, he would go through letting go from Margaret one last time. JOEY WOULD HAVE JUST BEEN THERE TO ACT ALL CUTE AND STUFF AS USUAL.
In season 7 (I doubt the show would have lasted any longer than that, had the cheif lived), James Roland would magically re-appear into Nell's life. Addy would then get a job promotion and be tempted to move to NY, and The Chief would finally marry. Julie would be pregnant, and Katie would be kind of jealous and cry to her sister that she can't find the right man to be in a long-term relationship with, so Jonathan sets her up with a guy at Lugis, who decides to open his own Pizza store next to Katie's boutique. The two decide to move in together, and the Chief hates the idea when he finds out. Sam would be a Sophomore in College and finally have a boyfriend who treats her right, and the Chief would even seem to like him. In the final episodes, Addy moves to NY to teach, Nell wants to go, but she isn't offered a job there, or anywhere she applies to, and she sees that everyone is doing so well for themselves. She talks with Joey, and tells him that they should get their own place of their own. Joey doesn't want to leave the Chief, or the family, and besides, it's not a family...a family is a mom and dad, but if they move, the Chief won't be around. James then Proposes to Nell and she agrees. In the final episode, Nell marries James as Julie gives birth. Katie is also proposed to by her live-in-boyfriend. Addy leaves for her job in NY, and Nell, Joey, and James move into a house right across the street from the Chief that goes on the market! Grandpa would just be a filler character as usual.
