Who are some TV characters that you think went downhill during the course of their show?

Hawkeye, M*A*S*H- When Alan Alda decided to go all moral and sappy and started having Hawkeye rant and rave about how much war is Hell.

BJ, M*A*S*H- When he grew the mustache and became even more of a whiner.

Matthew, NewsRadio- Hard for me to pinpoint exactly, but during the course of the show, he just grew more and more weird.

Antonio, Wings- I like him in the earlier seasons, but during the last couple of seasons, they really made him into such a whiny, pathetic, self-hating loser.

Janitor, Scrubs- I grew tired of him after the first season.

Chrissy Snow on Three's Company. She started off reasonably intelligent, if just a bit ditzy. She ended up a complete dumbbell.

Same can be said of Rebecca on Cheers, to a lesser degree.

I agree with you on that one. She was a nice character early on, but then got out of control. Just imagine if she had stayed for all eight seasons.

Eric Forman - That '70s Show - Although I still liked the character, he got too silly and weird in seasons six and seven.

Chelsea - That's So Raven, Chrissy Snow syndrome again :lol:

Fonzie (Happy Days) - Once Richie and Potsie left, he became too into himself a lot and that grated my nerves.

Arnold (Diff'rent Strokes) - As soon as he said "Whatcha' talkin' bout?" for the umpteenth billionth time!

Steve Urkel (Family Matters) - When they made him a permanent member of the show and he got really annoying from that point on. I don't care if he saved that show or not! He's still annoying to a T!

Daphne (Frasier) - When she made out w/ Niles

GEORGE JEFFERSON, jump the shark after the first year of the show.

It was no more dancing

it was no more yelling
it was no more door slamming
it was no more jumping in the air


Basically it was no more George-lol

Chrissy Snow from Three's Company - Before she left she was down to one brain cell. Even her hair was dumb.

Jodie Dallas from SOAP - He became more involved with women as the seasons progressed.

George, Elaine, Jerry, Kramer all jumped during the last two seasons, but I still loved them

Niles & Daphne Jumped once they hitched on Frasier

Are you kidding?The show is nothing without him even though him and Donna not getting married in the 6th season made the show suck

They went too far in making Eric dumber on Boy meets world. He gradually became more dumb every season. In season 1, he was normal. In 2 and 3, he was dim-witted. In seasons 4 and 5, the first signs of stupidity are shining through. In season 6, he's stupid, but believable. Up to this point Eric can be both stupid and sincere, sensitive, serious and believable. Then came season 7 and he became a moron, not being able to function in the real world. He 'jumped back' however after the saddening, painfully unfunny episode in which he found a 'lucky penny'. He became a bit more normal again and stayed like that until the finale.

Even though I like The Wonder Years I'll have to say Kevin Arnold since he got rebellious during the last two years of the show, totally unlike the Kevin with which I grew up. Winnie Cooper did, too, to an extent when she really wanted Kevin out of her life; she was no longer the girl next door.

Amazingly those two characters are currently in my avatar. Fortunately the picture was taken before they jumped the shark. :cool:

Could that not be put down to growing up?

Could that [Kevin's rebelliousness and Winnie's being drawn away from Kevin] not be put down to growing up?

I don't know, RD2004. When I grew up I did not turn rebellious like Kevin. I just like to, like a 1975 Ambrosia song suggests, hold on to yesterday! :cool:

Danny Dallas on Soap- Another fine character lost to Chrissy Snow syndrome. ;)

#1 Fonzie- Went from a quiet, interesting minor character to a rediculous parody of a 50's tough who could get any woman, turn on a jukebox with one punch and turn water into wine... :barf:
#2 Sam Malone-Turned into a real sleezeball character after Diane left the show
#3 Everyone on Married with Children-they all got stupider and Kelly most of all
#4 Jennifer on Family Ties- No fault of her own, but, once Andy was born, Jennifer spent all of her time going to her room < remember that??? ( they even parodied it on SNL )
#5 Archie Bunker -Who just became soft :lol:

OTHERS:

Archie Bunker - Once Meathead and Gloria left, he did soften up his image.

Fred Sanford - Like Archie, he started acting a bit nice toward Lamont in the last few seasons.

Louie DePalma - When he gets soft, too.

Denise Huxtable - Went from a reasonable teen to an all-out air-head that dropped out of college w/out a logical back-up plan, and married one of the most hideous people to ever grace a TV screen.

Jonathan Bower - Went from somewhat adorable kid to very annoying teenager. And look what happened to him in real-life!

Mallory Keaton - When she began dating that Rambo wanna-be reject, known as Nick!

Sam Malone - Once Diane left, he became a bit too sleazy, not to mention when he shedded the "piece," too.

I agree.

Ross, Monica and Phoebe from "Friends." Monica became shrill and too obsessive, Phoebe turned unlikeably cynical and bitter and Ross became nearly certifiable. On the other side of that coin, Joey obviously got dumber, but I never felt that his character itself completely changed.

Frasier between "Cheers" and "Frasier." He was one of my favorites on "Cheers" and was just unwatchably pompous and later, grouchy, in "Frasier." Fortunately, the writing and supporting cast of "Frasier" redeem that show, but I think it's the only show I like where I can't stand the main character.

Pretty much everyone on "Will & Grace." Will has become bitter and constantly angry, Grace I can't even explain, but she's lost every spark her character had in the beginning, they've both become self-absorbed, and Jack is just irritating. The only one who still remains semi-likeable is Karen, but she's so far removed from what her character once was that I feel I have to list her here too.

J.D. from "Scrubs" hasn't jumped yet, but the broader humor used in the first half of the current season affected his character in an odd way, and he was at times too over-the-top to connect with, which was especially a problem since you have his narration and point of view in every episode. He's always been goofy, but it was much subtler then. He's gotten better in the latter half this year, but there's still room for improvement.

Funny, i hated Frasier when he was on Cheers UNTIL Lillith showed up and liked him more and more over the years ! :lol: go figure!

When he went roller skating in that one episode, as hilarious as it was, that might have been the kicker.
