View Full Version : Willona had bad luck with men and two of them had similar sounding names.........
Janice Johnson 04-10-2006, 08:32 AM Willona used to be married to a guy, then they divorced. His name was Ray. He found her again later on, and he puts the moves on Thelma.
Willona's old boyfriend comes back into town and they go out for a while, and then he disappears(I think) His name is Frank. Frank and Ray sound a little alike.
Willona has a boyfriend who showers her with gifts and she gets suspicious, and then later finds out that Jeffrey is only dating her because Mrs. Gordon, Penny's birth mother is paying him to date Willona and Mrs. Woods and Jeffrey cook up a scheme to make Willona look like a bad mother to Penny. The scheme was that they set up a party at Willona's house with a bunch of wild freaks and then Mrs. Gordon has the ploce come in to break the party up.
Moonlight Lady 04-10-2006, 06:51 PM Those names sound nothing like each other.
Ireneparalegal 04-10-2006, 09:19 PM the only similarity abt the names Frank and Ray is they each are one syllable. Where the hell do you get the notion that those names sound similar!?

They sound similar because they have the same kind of "ay" sound in their names. Fraaaaaa and Raaaaaaaaaa(if you know what I mean) Okay, take out the F and the ANK from Frank and then you will have a pronounciation that sounds like Ray.........

No, they don't. Frank has the short "a" sound and Ray has the long "a" sound. This is taught in grade school, usually 1st or 2nd grade.

retrochick9 04-12-2006, 12:16 AM Hey, you have something there. It's too bad Lennnnay was not Pennnnay's father! Then Willona could have married him and said, "This is my husband Lennnnay and my daughter pennnnay". OK, I'm tired, that's my excuse.

Janice Johnson 04-13-2006, 09:04 AM Okay, let's get off the subject of the names. Let's talk about what I put FIRST in the topic. Willona had bad luck with men. I did NOT like how Jeffrey played her by pretending to like her because he was a ploy in Mrs. Gordon's scheme.:( I also did not like how Ray came back and tried to make a pass at Thelma. :(

Ireneparalegal 04-13-2006, 01:10 PM Anaaaaay of Lennaaaay ain't worth a Pennaaaaaay, so said Willona, however their sons Bennaaaay, Dennaaaaay and Kennaaaay along with their daughters, Pennaaaaay & Jennaaaaay took their pets, Winnaaaaay and Ginnaaaay to a farm and bought a chicken called Hennaaaaaay Pennaaaaay, named after the hen in the children's nursery rhyme. They brought their chicken home but she didn't want to eat anaaaaaaay of the chicken feed that Lennaaaaay paid for, which cost a pretty pennaaaaaay and as Lennaaaaaay said, "I ain't having anaaaaaay of this!" "I've got waaaaaaay to manaaaaaay mouths to feed alreadaaaaaaaay."

retrochick9 04-13-2006, 11:55 PM I think everyone knows that on Maude James' name was Henraaayyyy
retrochick9 04-14-2006, 12:04 AM But getting back to the subject of Willona, I think she was a good role model for young women. She did have bad luck with men sometimes, but she knew she was worth more than being with some jackass. She worked hard, always kept herself looking great, and was strong. She didn't settle for someone just to have someone around. She dated that decent guy in that episode where Florida set them up when they went to that wedding. Then Florida was all ready to "plan their wedding". Willona was telling Florida that she just doesn't know if she's the type to be married or have a family, that was great. She liked him, but knew she wasn't in love with him. Not all women want to be married, some want to be independent. She also dated that deaf guy who was nice. She didn't always have bad luck. I can relate to her totally!!!

I bumped this up so my salt sister could see this funny ass thread.
Ok Monika, it was NOT poetry, but it is close enough. Enjoy.
catlover79 06-19-2007, 12:57 AM  You sure have a way with words, Irene! I sure enjoyed it.
Getting back to Willona, she just had bad luck with men, PERIOD. Many people hated the adoption of Penny stroy, but that allowed Willona to grow up and become a real character. I loved when she sang "For Once In My Life" at the talent show and looked at Penny the whole time. Willona had found REAL AND TRUE LOVE by the time the show ended - but not in the form of a man. She found it in being a mother, and that was a stroke of genius. Maybe I'm in the minority and many others hated having Penny around (*cough*Solomon*cough*), but Willona really grew and became a three-dimensional character once Penny showed up.
SitcomGyrl1955 06-19-2007, 11:04 AM in what ways was she materialistic and shallow?
I was just going to ask that same question.

I totally see your point of view. Yes, Willona was one way when she was a single lady, but she grew into another lady when she finally had true love, not from a man, but from her child. God, so eloquently put my dear. I certainly will have a change a heart abt the whole Penny scenario. :D  I guess there were times when Penny's character seemed to be "just in the way" as far as storylines were concerned, no real direction. The best times though are when Willona and she shared their love for each other.
comedyfreak 06-21-2007, 05:26 AM I'm probably in the minority concerning Penny too, I liked her. You could see how the Wilona character had grown.

Catlover, you put that in context very well. And I feel the same way....I loved the addition of Penny on the show. She definitely changed Wilona for the better, eventhough Wilona was one of my favorites anyway. Now it's Keith I could have done without
catlover79 06-21-2007, 11:42 AM ^ Thank you all for the kind words. I applaud the writers for going against the grain and having Willona find true love through mothering a child, instead of marrying a man. Even now that would be an unusual plot twist on TV.
