Okay this may have a weird sounding title, but I know that we have discussed bringing back UM before. As great as this sounds it does not look like it will happen considering that popular opinion believes that RS was the essence of UM and that when he died, the show died with him.
Still there was a certain thing about UM that could be recreated. Even when covering cases that had no supernatural connection(like wanted) UM still presented their stories well, with a rather creepy ambiance(not as intense as AMW's, but more creepy). And of course there was that freakish vibe in all those ghosts and UFO stories that I need not explain.
Now maybe I have strayed from the subject but I will get back on track. UM did a service for the community as far as the Wanted, Unexplained Death, and Missing Persons cases were concerned, and this is a service that will always be in demand. I am surprised that no one has mentioned this before(at least I have not seen this mentioned before).
Would it be all that unrealistic for Consgrove/Meurer Productions or someone else to try and make a totally new show not all that different from UM? It would still keep the traditional UM type of atmosphere and freakish atonal background music, but because it would not actually be UM and would have different music and a different title, it could hold its own without RS as a host. They could cover all the types of stories UM did (criminal, paranormal, historic legends, sci/med and investigative practices), but to keep it from simply being a UM copycat, they could also do some original things UM never did, such as team with Interpol to cover criminal cases from other coutries, and maybe try to do some miracles stories from non-christian faiths(Muslim, Pagan, Asatru, Hindu, Taoist, and more things connected to American Indian beliefs). Plus the new show could exclude all the stupid stuff that never really belonged on UM in the first place (fertility statues, raining money, Howard Storm renounces atheism, and most of the lost loves stories). Finally, a new show could do its own versions of stories that were on UM but never solved, keeping them in the eye of the public. The fact this it would be a totally new show with some original stuff to offer up may actually make some network or station eager to air it, much more eager than they would be to air UM without the man who many say carried the show. Personally, I think that the second host from Beyond Belief:Fact Or Fiction, Jonathon Frakes, would be great as a host for a show not that different from UM. BB:FOF had a much similar atmosphere even though the show was considerably different.
Regardless of preference, I think that the idea of a new show following in UM's footsteps is quite realistic, especially if there is a demand for it from enough hardcore UM fans like ourselves. Maybe we should all start some letter writing...
