OK people....

I know you all love Mary, etc etc. However, I am befuddled by the fact that not one of you is asking the simple question, "Why is MTM not on TV anywhere?" Not on TVLAND....not on TBS.....not on NICK AT NITE....

Personally, I rank the greatest sitcoms of all time as following:
1- Seinfeld
2- Andy Griffith Show
3- MTM
4- M*A*S*H

Seinfeld is on all the time....Andy Griffith is always on somewhere...M*A*S*H is on Hallmark multiple times per day....so.....WHERE IS MTM ????????

I get where you're coming from, but the first 3 seasons are out on DVD, (S4 drops in June!) so it's not like we can't still watch the show. Plus, if it were on in syndication somewhere, they eps. would be all chopped up. Not that we wouldn't LIKE TMTMS to be on, but I think we're better off the way things are now.

The real worth of a show is it's re-playablity on network or cable TV. The mere fact that MTM has not aired in years boggles the mind. Not all of us can afford to purchases DVD's to watch shows we love. There must be a REASON MTM is not on now or not on in recent years. I need to know why.

It's had a 2 or 3 year run (still playing actually) on TVLand Canada. Personaly, I wish they could swap it for Rhoda and run that for a little bit.

Maybe today's advertiser's don't think it would pull in ratings. I just hope that Fox decides to release the rest of MTM and the spin-offs. I would love to see Lou Grant again. And Rhoda-as much as I love MTM I think I could relate to Rhoda more easily. I also loved Carlton your doorman!! Way funny!!
I miss seeing Mary on tv but I think the days of gentle sitcoms are over. But there was some fighting on MTM too-Sue Ann and Phyllis, or Sue Ann and anybody!! I can't wait for season 4!! Bring on the Lars Affair!! I don't understand why MTM is not on tv now-maybe it has too much class and would make the other shows that are on tv look bad. I just hope season 4 sells enough so that all the seasons come out-maybe even Rhoda. I have a feeling it should sell well enough to warrant all seven seasons. I heard the dvd market for older tv shows is starting to slow so I am starting to get a little nervous.

I think its a numbers thing, because of its high profile, its probably expensive to buy in syndication; and probably doesnt bring in high ratings. MTM was a highly acclaimed show that was a benchmark for women at the time, but, no longer seems as relevant ( to some ) , they played it on a limited basis on the womens net here, for a time, but, it didnt seem to find an audience.....mainly cause they only showed the first 2 seasons over and over.Btw, just so you know, i watched the show during its entire run on CBS ( along with the Carol Burnette show, on Sat nights ) ,and love it still!

Because 20th Century-Fox Television (their parent, News Corp., now owns the entire MTM television library) controls the rights to the show. When Viacom's rights to the series expired, they had to pull their inventory of episodes from syndication AND cable. So far as I know, TCF has not negotiated ANY new deals with ANY outlet to run Mary's show again.

As the other poster said, The Mary Tyler Moore Show is shown on TV Land Canada. Finally, something that isn't shown in America is shown here. Very rare.

Here in the UK,MTMS hasn't been show since the early 90s on cable and even then after a few episodes into season 6,they stopped it all togethor,so looking forward to season 6 and season 7 on DVD cause I've never seen them.
Rhoda is rerun constantly on cable here,Phyllis ran in the early 90s on cable but in wrong episode order,the last ever episode was shown during the season1 run,suddenly Bess was pregnant,Phyllis had a new job with no explanation.
Thanks godness,at least MTMS is coming out on DVD,we'll have season 4 in a couple of weeks hopefully the other three will follow soon after!:lol:

Actually, I'm thrilled to death that The Mary Tyler Moore Show isn't on the air. Why? It helps to increase DVD sales. I think part of the reason Season 1 didn't sell well initially is because it was considered way too expensive for a series that people could tune into anytime they wanted on TVLand. I remember telling my sister about my frustration that Season 1 was to be the only DVD set that we were getting, and she said she'd likely never buy a Season 1 set (though she loves the show) simply because she could watch it for free on TVLand.

I know one can't say it was like that for everyone, but I wonder how many potential MTM DVD customers put off buying the first season for this very reason? It's why The Golden Girls wasn't released right away. The concern that the constant re-runs on Lifetime would over-saturate itself and that no one would be willing to pay for the DVDs. Fortunately, the DVDs were much more cheap than the $50 Season 1 set of MTM so The Golden Girls did well. Plus, the promotion helped as well.

In any case, I think some of the older shows actually benefit from being off the air if we're aiming to get the whole series released on DVD. Just a thought...

I have to disagree ED because by the show not being on the air, it prevents the show from gaining a new fan base. So wouldnt the show have a better chance of doing well in sales if it was on TV LAND? That's why Fresh Prince has done well in DVD Sales because of being on N@N

I don't think it's so much an issue of MTM being forgotten, or anything like that, but just that maybe the show is taking a rest. After 50 years of television, there are sooo many choices out there. Not everything can be on at any given time. In the case of MTM, I remember it first came to Nick@Nite back in 1992. They ran it for years before moving it over to TVLand where it also ran for a long time. Altogether, between N@N and TVLand, it must have been on at least 10 years. That's a long time for those 168 episodes to be run day after day, night after night. If you ask me, it was a pretty impressive run. Now as for the best sitcoms of all time, here are my picks:

1. Mary Tyler Moore (not including the first two seasons)
2. I Love Lucy (not including the first season)
3. The Honeymooners
4. Taxi
5. Cheers
6. All in the Family (except for the last two seasons)
7. The Dick Van Dyke Show
8. The Lucy Show (first two seasons)
