...and why not? Since they now own the United Artists TV library (as part of their acquisition of MGM-UA), why not officially release all 30 episodes of the show in a "box set", and give those people who love it (or never saw it before) a chance to own it? And maybe give some "snotty" TV critics a chance to sneer at it and have something to write about in their columns--
IF they saw it!

Why not, I say? What do YOU think??

As a "snotty" critic who HAS seen several episodes of the show, I can attest to its awfulness.
Which is not to say that I don't agree with you completely-I can't imagine NOT owning it if it were available!

...'pscisme', I have more of an advantage over you on "MY MOTHER THE CAR".
I remember seeing it when it was first on NBC [and the night NO ONE saw it in New York because of the blackout on 11/9/65; all of their TV stations in the area were knocked out along with the city's power- the NBC affiliate in Philadelphia was showing a local discussion program, so I STILL couldn't see it that night!!] AND the syndicated repeats that followed for another year or so....I grew up with it, and I LIKED the show. Not as "awful" as you perceive it, believe me!!!! If SONY ever decided to release it on DVD, I'd buy it.....

the whole series is available in the tape trading circuit and since it hasn't aired on TV since 98 when I think TV Land had it on it's regular schedule I might do a trade for it.

;)Indeed, you do have the advantage of me! I have seen several episodes, however, and insist that it is indeed quite "awful," which is not to say that I didn't enjoy watching it; merely that I'd have to file it under "so bad it's good."

Your recollection about the blackout in NY in 1965 was fascinating to me: was that the blackout that inspired the 1968 film "Where Were You When The Lights Went Out?" with Doris Day? How long did the blackout last?

Along the lines of the "local discussion program" on in Philly, I remember talking to the program director of the NBC affiliate in Tucson, Arizona, who told me that he so disliked the program that he chose not to air it, covering with a "local interest" show also! I wonder what kind of pressure affiliates got from NBC over this?

I didn't like it back then, but for nostalgia's sake, I may pick up a set.

I remember seeing reruns of it when I was growing up in the 70s, on a local station; and my memories are that it was pretty good. But I haven't seen it since then, so I'm sure I wouldn't think so now.

this answer's a little late; but since noone else has answered it, I'll give it a shot-yes, the Oct 1965 blackout was the inspiration for the 1968 movie "WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT?" with Doris Day.

That's only speculation on your part. If Dusty's Trail can get a release then anything's possible.

Dusty's Trail is a gray area release, supposedly P.D., although it really isn't.

MMTC is not a horrible show. It's not a very good show but there have been far worse shows done. It's at least watchable, unlike say The Munsters Today, which you couldn't sit through 2 minutes of.

I'd like to see it, too. I can't believe it's really as bad as people have said over the years. In any case, it can't be any worse than the trash that's on the air today.

I sat through one episode of The Munsters Today and only because of the guest star. His initials are G.S. ;) Having said that, the show was REALLY bad. I think the only one ever heard from again in the cast was Lee Meriwether. Didn't Bonnie Franklin (One Day at a Time) direct a few of the episodes?

I also saw MMTC first run..The worst you could say is that it was a bland family sitcom, not unlike others of its time, except for the talking car..It was not the worst show in TV history by a long shot

TVLand only showed one episode on the first night TVLand aired April 29, 1996. It was never on the regular schedule. And thats the only time I ever saw My Mother the Car.

I'd be interested to see anything with Jerry Van Dyke in it. He's one of my favorite comic actors!

Luther Van Dam was one of the most hilarious sitcom characters of all time! And Jerry Van Dyke was brilliant in the role. He was born to play that character. I also really liked him as Stacie Petrie in his four guest appearances on His brother Dick's show.(The Dick Van Dyke Show)

^ The time he spilled grape juice on Christine's white carpet was one of the funniest moments in sitcom history!! Then he and Hayden burned the dinner Christine cooked for them and ended up ruining the oven. CLASSICS!! :brent

That's the brilliance of Jerry Van Dyke. He can take something as simple as spilling juice and turn it into a classic comedy moment. And the whole time it will look like he has no idea what he's doing. Brilliant!!

^ All he had to do was walk along chomping on a jelly donut and he'd get laughs!!

It may not ever get a DVD release, but it can be seen in its entirety (30 episodes) on HULU. I don't think its the worst sit-com in the world, but I couldn't have seen it going much past a second season, either.

I enjoy Jerry Van Dyke in his own right. That said, he so much reminds me of his brother, Dick, both in appearance and mannerisms.

I think its funny, both brothers played characters who owned "magical" antique cars. Dick in the Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang movie, and Jerry in My Mother The Car. I sometimes felt like Dave Crabtree's 1928 Porter was going to sprout wings and start flying!

I remember watching this show on TV Land back in the 90's. I've always wanted to own it but the studio never released an official set so I had to resort to a bootleg. Gotta do what you gotta do.

I saw it a few years ago on cable channel Trio. I was able to tape about 7 episodes, if I remember right, including one where Charles Grodin played a jealous husband who suspected Dave of cheating with his wife where Dave & Maggie were really only trying to teach her to cook. As someone else mentioned, the full 30 episodes are also now available (for free last time I looked) on Hulu.
