...I preferred Mr. Bentley more than Helen Willis. Helenwas just not funny enough for me. Mr. Bentley was a lot funnier in my opinion.

Mr. Bentley only was funny in the presence of George. The only character on the show that was funny and not in the same scene as George was Lionel from season 1

I liked Bently alot. I guess like Solomon said, depending on how the character was situated. But overall, I loved his character.

BTW did u all know Mr. Bently used to be on Sesame Street back in the days? He was the guy who was the painter and he would paint numbers in the city on odd places.

I REMEMBER that, Irene! LOL. Wasn't sure if it was him or someone who just looked like him. I always liked Mr.Bentley. He was also on an episode of Maude as a reverend in season 3 I believe.

That's true-LOL I always thought, what the hell??? Does he LIKE "Mr. J" walking on him? BTW, did that continue to happen in later seasons or was that just from season 1 & 2? I can't remember.

I think the last time was in 1979. It defintely wasn't in the script in the 80's-lol

I have a bad back. It feels good at times to have someone put pressure on it, or massage it, but there is nothing that can be done for it. That's probably what Mr. Bently was going thru.

The last time I had seen Mr. Bently in anything was a movie with Ricki Lake called "Babycakes"...he played her boss in a mortuary.

I didn't find Helen to be funny at all. Well, maybe a little, but Bentley and George had funnier scenes than Helen and George.

Classic Helen Willis on April 12, 1975 when she was defending her Husband to George

"Look man, I am Happy with what I got because he is everything you are not."

Bentley was much more appealing than Helen. Bentley was a fun character, although in a way he was extraneous. Only a few episodes focus on him and after a while they stopped doing these for good reason- he works much better as a supporting character. Helen is a functional character, but of all the people whose names appeared in the main titles throughout the seasons she and Jenny were the least funny, she serves a purpose but she wasn't really all that humorous.

In the last couple seasons when Bentley came back he wasn't as appealing as before and Helen was in the show too much. In the first 7 seasons there are shows with only one supporting player (Bentley, Florence or Lionel for ex.) but in the later years it's almost like they felt compelled to have the Willises and Florence in the episodes (unless the actors were sick or unavailable for some reason). This overkill of these characters when the cast was reduced took away from the series.

The last show (I think) to have the back walking gag is Disco George where Bentley walks on George's back.

I thought so, I guess they planned for Bentley to walk on George because they knew they were no longer putting in the script once the new decade started

I used to like his walk. He sure didn't have that many kitchen utensils, did he. Always asking Weezie for something.:p
