A short list of TV Characters that we were SUPPOSED to love, but everyone I knew Hated
CARMINE from Laverne and Shirley (did ANY woman on the planet think he was sexy?) even as a teenager we all made fun of The Big Ragoo (Big Dork is more like it)
CHACHI from Happy Days (Wah Wah Wah) and yet he made the cover of every teen magazine every month?
ADAM RICH as Nicholas on Eight is Enough --- as a teen, I wanted to punch him right in the nose!
TATOO from Fantasy Island-- lets see, I will hire a midget with a thick accent, make him dress in a white suit, and ring a bell and scream like an idiot and the audience will adore that?
JETHRINE from THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES--- OK heres some wild humor, lets put Jethro in a dress and have him play hillbilly cousin Jethrine
Michael Knight From KNIGHT RIDER, I always hoped that KITT would turn evil and run him over, and that plastic looking leather jacket that he always wore even when it was 100 degrees outside
ISSAC the Bartender from THE LOVE BOAT---- if this cheezy looking guy points at me and give me the RIGHT ON look one more time, Ill grab him by his afro and smash his head in with a beer bottle
AUNT BEA from The Andy Griffith Show --- I guess she could cook up a mean pan of Fried Chicken, but she was a meddlesome pain in the butt, and why couldnt Andy just cook his own dinner and run the vacuum? I mean, they never had any big crimes in Mayberry that kept him so busy he had to have his Aunt move in with him? plus having her live there, pretty much insured that Andy was never going to get lucky with Helen Crump! OK I admit, she seemed sweet, but annoying as hell
JOEY LAWRENCE on Gimme A Break -- annoying cute kid with mop top haircut (see ADAM RICH)
JOEY LAWRENCE on Anything--- just as annoying even grown up
Larry Wilcox as JON on CHIPS--- Eric Estrada was the studly one that all the girls swooned over, JON was just his dorky white sidekick that noone remembers nowadays!
LITTLE RICKY -- just what they needed, u have 4 of the most talented comic tv actors ever, lucille ball, desi arnaz, vivian vance and william frawley, and u have to find a way to work an annoying overly cute kid into the mix
THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY ---- all of them, the whole stupid bus could have crashed and burned for all we cared!
BALKI from PERFECT STRANGERS--- how many times did it take to hear, DONT BE RIDICULOUS before it stopped being funny?.... lets see?... 1
HOWIE MANDEL as himself as the host of DEAL OR NO DEAL... Same question as above, but somehow he manages to say his catch phrase a minimum of once every 5 minutes
STEVE URKEL --- need I say more?!?

I agree all the way to the end. Urkel was family matters. The show was designed to be a vehicle for Vel Johnson. Jalel White wasn't even in the first episode which did poorly. To combat the poor ratings Urkel was introduced as the nerdy nighbor. Instant hit, and with his catch phase of "Did I do that", the series soared. They loved White as Urkel but not as White, same with Jason Glexander of Seinfeld. Great as George but bombed as anything else.

egad
how could I forgot
FLO ? Florence Jean Castleberry, from ALICE
KISS MY GRITS!!!!
First, she was supposed to be the town slut and a wild party woman??? Did anyone ever get a good look at FLO? Not with a 10 foot pole! Not with 2 paper bags, one for each of us!
How desperate was this town?
and I hated the stupid KISS MY GRITS....
NO LIE on this one, my mother used to have a yello T shirt that said KISS MY GRITS on it, and I was sooooo embarassed every time she wore it!
ONE MORE TO ADD TO THE LIST
Bosley from Charlies Angels---- OK Who out there wanted to see the braless jiggle fest interrupted for an appearance by David Doyle as Bosley????
PS lilhave, i agree 100%, family matters before Urkel was a quaint little family show, a forgettable sitcom that was ok, BUT after Urkel, it was an abomination! ha ha ha
lilhave 03-31-2006, 10:52 PM A big catch phrase was uttered by Jack Webb of dragnet fame during the 50's. In questioning a witness, he would always interject with "just the facts", which is what everyone uttered when talking to someone. I had teachers tell the kids the same thing.

Wow!, you hit some icons there. Jack Benny, probably the greatest timing of any comedian, Sid Ceasar, along with Skelton and Gleason the best comedians of the 50's and George Burns as good a straight man one can be.
You kids have no repect for the old timers.

loren 03-31-2006, 11:14 PM i grew up with one channel and benny, hope, ceaser, berle, were on all the time
not one of them had any talent
and all their jokes were seen comming about 2 minutes ahead of time
hope told the same stories for 37 years, and never once did he make me laugh
so what, benny was a cheap skate, after 2 minutes that wasnt funny any more
burns smoked a cigar and acted like a duffess, so what
my cat could do that
ceaser made lots of faces
so what
red skelton was truely funny, with his skits
and gleason was funny like 10% of the time
after all, this is my opinion
hey harvey

It wasn't easy growing up as a kid. Edison was still fiddling with the light bulb, Ford had a crazy idea about mass production and my favorite comedians were Snub Polard, Fatty Arbuckle, Charley Chase, Ben Turpin, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and less we forget Charlie Chaplin. The movies were great and the piano player upfront gave some sound. I can remember when Al Jolson said he would make a movie called the Jazz singer and you would be able to hear his voice.

debwalsh 04-01-2006, 03:14 PM Savage - I'd have to agree. I've liked Shelly Long in other things (Troop Beverly Hills is a guilty pleasure!), but hated her in Cheers. Woody Harrelson in the same show used to really annoy me, too. In fact, the whole show annoyed me, all the more so because I lived in Boston at the time.
Least favorite character on TV ... hmmm ... Captain Kangaroo. Bob Keshan. When I was a kid, I thought his show was punishment.

Hi
Did you know that before becoming the Captain, for years he was Clarabelle the clown on the old Howdy Doody show? Never spoke. Now that was a classic with Mr. Flubberbuster, Double Doody, and of course the lovely princess Summer Fall, Winter Spring ,Chief Thuderthud and Phineas T. Bluster.
They don't make shows like that any more. If I remember there were over 2000 shows produced.

cooltvshows 04-01-2006, 10:41 PM Ed, Edd and Eddy (from the cartoon) - I kept hoping these creeps would stumble across a cartoon claymore mine.
The Smurfs (from the cartoon) - Texas tower sniper, where are you now that we need you? And why did you waste your sharpshooting skills on ordinary people, instead of little blue cartoon creatures?
Fonzie from Happy Days - lock him in a windowless cell with a pit bull with AIDS.
The entire cast of "Seinfeld." Bungee jumping with piano wire? Or an industrial meat grinder? So hard to choose...
And the ultimate in loathesomeness...Rainbow Brite!!!! (from the cartoon series) Three words: VX nerve gas.
However...
...I must take vehement exception to Loren's statements about George Burns, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar and Jack Benny. I would really _really_ like to get a complete set of DVDs of the Jack Benny Show from back when it aired on CBN in the mid 1980s. That was one of the funniest shows ever put on TV. It was classic. And I wasn't even born when it was originally on. I would really *really* like to get a complete set of Your Show Of Shows, since I've heard so much about it, and seen a few clips. But seems like the kinescopes have been lost.

Now that would be Fantasy Island!...and Tattoo running around calling you "Boss" every five seconds...what a dream!
megamanj2004 04-03-2006, 04:22 PM Steve Urkel - OK, when I was kid watching this show, it wasn't half bad, but these days, if I hear him say "Did I do that?" one more time, I just wanna knock him upside his head w/ a hammer and then knock off what's left of him and then say "I'm sorry, did I do that?"
Everybody from Friends, Seinfield, Frasier (though I liked Fraiser on Cheers, his own show is just painful to watch a lot!), and Roseanne.
Also, Fonzie from Happy Days - His leather jackets are about as plastic as William Shatner's hairpieces. And I won't even get started w/ him saying "Aaaaaaaaaay!" in every sentence, either.
Arnold Jackson from Diff'rent Strokes - I wished Mr. Drummond really gave him a spanking!!! There's a spoof on Robot Chicken where Mr. Drummond actually gives Arold a spanking!!! And it's hilarious, too! I need that clip!!! His constant saying of "What you talkin' bout, Willis!" even grates my teeth to this day.
You can see why Gary coleman's career haunted him for the rest of his life the very first time he opened his mouth and spewed out those 5 annoying words!
Flo from Alice - This is an example of why it was a good thing that loveable charcters actually left the show and Flo is my prime example. Does any of those people on that show even looked at her close up? She looks somebody's grandma being a 70-year old Hooker. I dunno how anyone thinks she's so hott! EWWWWW!!! And let's not even get started w/ "Kiss My Grits," either!
That's why Jolene (the girl that replaced Flo) looks a hundred times hotter than Flo ever was!!!
Lamont from Sanford and Son - Is it me, or does he seem lke he acts like a old brick on every turn?
Everybody from the Care Bears Cartoons - This show was just flat out horrible on every turn. Couldn't stomach this show at all!
J.J. from Good Times - I never understood what was so damn funny about him! He was the equivalent of an annoying talking parrot. And I wished that James Sr. would of given him the "Big Mac" (big butt whuppin') like he did one of Michael's friends on one ep.
T-Greg 04-03-2006, 04:41 PM I disagree with what some people say about Seinfeld. It's one of the funniest shows of all time! One funny note about Gary Coleman. One one of the episodes of Surreal Life 2 has Coleman playing the manager of a restaurant where the houseguests are supposed to work and raise money for a charity. The houseguests include Erik Estrada, Ron Jeremy, Tammy Faye Baker and Vanilla Ice. Todd Bridges comes in as a customer and has a seat, so Vanilla Ice keeps urging Coleman on and on to say the phrase "Whatcha talkin' bout Willis". Coleman refuses again and again. Vanilla Ice even picks him up, which really humiliates Coleman so much that he walks out and quits. Bronson Pinchot (Balki from Perfect Strangers) is a houseguest in season 5. He really forces himself on some of the female houseguests....they keep pushing him away.
Lex Luthor 04-03-2006, 11:13 PM Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson if Different Strokes. How often can you hear "whatchoo talkin bout Willis" before you want to strangle the little midget.

I also agree with Aunt Bee. Can't stand her!
treky 04-06-2006, 01:40 AM Harvey. What was the phrase that Clarabelle spoke (the only time he ever spoke) in the final show? Was it "Goodbye kids"?
I'll answer, instead. Yes, it was "Goodbye, kids". I remember there was a reunion show for "Howdy Doody" back around 88 or 89, and they showed some clips from it, and that was one of them.
It was at the very end of the show; they were all gathered on the stage; and Clarabelle tugged Buffalo Bobs arm franticly and signaled to him that he wanted to say something. Buffalo Bob said, "You mean you've been able to talk all this time"? Clarabelle nodded yes, then Buffalo Bob said "Well hurry up and say something! The show's about to end"! There was a drum roll, the camera closed in on him, he opened his mouth and said "Goodbye kids".
treky 04-06-2006, 02:00 AM Ed, Edd and Eddy (from the cartoon) - I kept hoping these creeps would stumble across a cartoon claymore mine.

But seems like the kinescopes have been lost.no, the kinescopes of "Your Show of Shows" (the title was changed to "Ceasers Hour" when Imogene Coca left after the 3rd season, and was replaced by Nanette Fabray) still exist. I remember seeing a show on PBS 3 or 4 years agothat showed clips of it. And back around 1990 or 91, Comedy Central (they were called Comedy Network at the time)early Monday morning called "The Best of 'YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS' " that showed clips of that and "CEASERS HOUR". Each episode was introduced by Sid Ceaser.
They also used to show episodes of "THE JACK BENNY SHOW".
And I have a show that I recorded off of PBS one night about 1987 called "TEN FROM 'YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS' " that shows clips from it. It was first realeased as-and I'm not making this up-a THEATRICAL MOVIE!!!! in 1973 (REALLY!!)
Chocoholic 04-06-2006, 04:45 PM The Friends gang. None of them were people I'd want to be friends with. I never could understand the appeal of that show.
Diane Chambers from Cheers. She reminds me so much of this girl I grew up with who was such a stuck up, know-it-all bitch who beleived she was God's gift to the world. I also didn't care for Sam.
I know I'm going a bit off-topic here, but does anyone else find that the TV characters they don't like are like people in real life that you can't stand?
Heather987 04-07-2006, 02:12 AM My list might fall in with the minority, but these people either made me stop watching or cringe if I did watch
Martin Lawrence - Martin: to much of an ego, repeatedly used the same jokes or catchprase that was just stupid IMO, sounded very racists at times
Kelly - Married with Children: Sorry just cant stand the woman she cannot act and even screwed up playing a dumb blonde. Over acted!
Jackie - Roseanne: Had her character not gone over the edge I may have felt differently
Johnathen - Whos the Boss: Was he really needed
Olivia/Pam/Rudy/Grandparents/Elvin/"Bud" - TCS
Jada Pinkett/Sinbad/Freddie - A Different World: Annoying character
Roseanne/DJ - Roseanne
That red head kid on Different Strokes
Vera - Alice: Another ditzy character that had less funny lines then a rock
Nicky - Fresh Prince of Bel Aire: Sarcastic and obnoxious
Ben - Growing Pains
Larry/Darryl/Darryl - Newhart
Charlenes cousin on Desiging Women - Cant remember her name Carlene or something, just over did the hick act
Everyone on Beverly Hillbillies
Kirsti Ally - Cheers, think I got used to the blonde prude Diane
Carol/Cindy - Brady Bunch
Iola - Mama's Family: think her looks just made it to hard for me to like her, and her boring stories are enough to hate her
megamanj2004 04-07-2006, 07:44 PM Heather987, wouldn't that Red-head kid go by the name of Sam on Diff'rent Strokes? The same Sam that came in the 1984-85 season? And the same Sam that also caused DS to JtS?
If so, then I agree w/ you there!
Yes, he too got on my nerves asking too many irrelevant questions 24/7!!!
