I never liked audience participation on sitcoms, aside from them laughing. I hate when they clap when a character walks through the door...anything like that.

Yeah, that was pitiful, which is why i hated when they gave statistics or dramatic speeches because that's all they were doing it for, was for audience reaction. As a matter of fact, there is a speech that Florida gave and she was expecting the "cheer" "applause" "right on" and guess what? It didn't happen. I can't remember which episode, but when I do remember, or when they do show it, I will put it here!!!!!

I hear that. I mean, there is nothing wrong with "unexpected" applause, cheers, etc. I hated those EXPECTED applause and cheers. Happy Days had that crap going on every time Fonzie walked in. Henry Winkler would have to pause before saying his dialogue for the audience to hush. It was worse with Chachi coming into view. God, how I hated that.

In the episode abt hypertension when JJ comes out with the aspirin, James yells at him to take them himself, he didn't need them. JJ looked really quick towards the camera or the director and he said "huh?"...that to me seemed to be something he did out of the blue because of the audience laughing so long and loud. That was cool, because it shows that wasn't planned, it had to be done.

When things are scripted so the audience MUST do something, that's when it becomes ridiculous.

They also did that with Urkel on Family Matters. Every single episode he would walk in the audience would applause. I wonder how the other actors felt although some of them did get an applause at one time or another.
