Recently, the Suncoast chain has gone bankrupt and is selling all of its merchandise and even parts of the stores themeselves at discounted prices. This bankruptcy effects all Suncoast, SamGoody, and MediaPlay stores around the country. I think the reason why they're going bankrupt is because of their habit of selling at list price. Nearly every successful DVD store so far has done well via their fantastic deals. Suncoast wasn't very leniant in that area, giving only meager discounts at periodically-planned times. Rush out to your Suncoast, SamGoody and MediaPlay stores now though, and you can drastically improve your DVD collections! Though many of the DVDs have already been snatched up off the shelves, you can still get some decent deals. I got alot in 2 different binges, 2 different stores:

I see my city on the list -- the Sam Goody in my mall is closing, yes, but the Suncoast here is not. Yay me! :D The Sam Goody at my mall is almost empty. I don't shop there anyway, heh.

I loved Suncoast. I litterally went there every Tuesday. Now I go to Best Buy, but doesn't have the same feel as Suncoast did.

There seems to be some confusion here...

I talked with one of the personnel at the Suncoast near me, and she clearly stated that the entire chain is bankrupt. ALL SUNCOAST'S ARE CLOSING.

Well, I don't know what to tell ya. The Sam Goody in my mall has 100 of these STORE CLOSING signs all over the store, but the Suncoast in the same mall is as lively as ever, and new items are still being stocked. I picked up IDOJ and some Three's Company DVDs there last week.

I'm going to the mall right now, so I am going to ask the guys there (they know me by name :lol: ) and see what they have to say.

Think of it like how Kmart filed for bankruptcy a few years ago. A LOT of Kmarts closed, but there are still a lot of Kmarts that are still open. I still have a Kmart here in the city.

I live near a mall with both a Suncoast and a Sam Goody in it (Scottsdale, AZ) and only the Sam Goody is listed on the close list. I'll check out the mall tomorrow...errr...later today. :)

I thought the U.S music store Musicland used to own Sam Goody and Suncoast. I know they were going out of business.

Does anybody know if Musicland in the U.S and MusicWorld in Canada is the same company? Or are they different companies?

The chain is bankrupt, it's just a matter of time. Changing owners is a polite way of saying changing stores. Any store still open is just shoveling **** against the tide right now, it'll be closed soon enough.

The most likely thing that'll happen is that a new DVD store chain will inhibit the old Suncoast stores.

Went to both Sam Goody and Suncoast today. They were picked pretty clean already, though I did pick up a couple of DVDs. No TV DVDs, though. Suncoast had a few left, but I either wasn't interested in what they had, or already had the ones that I wanted (i.e. West Wing 1 and 2).

They were selling stuff at 50 - 60% off, but that was off of list price, so the deals weren't great.

Of course, the fact that they insisted on selling at list price in the first place probably contributed to their downfall. And the fact that the stores were in malls with high rents didn't help either.

I remember our mall had a Musicland about 20 years ago, but it went out and became Blockbuster Music and then that went out of business and now its a Foot Locker.

I know where that Sam Goody Location is since I go to the Lakewood Center Mall in Lakewood, CA several times a year. I don't buy too many DVD's or CD's there much since Suncoast has the TV DVD's I'm waiting for. Sad to see it go, though. ohno:

A few years ago they used to be in the Macy's/Mervyn's area and I used to pick up some CD's and videos from time to time before they re-located.

Thank God the Suncoast location hopefully will still be there! It's where I picked up my first ever TV DVD "Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends" - 'The Complete 1st Season' back in August 2003.

So, I never even knew that the one that was in my mall used to sell TV-DVDs. When I heard that it was closing, I brought four TV-DVDs from them. It used to be three stores down from the Target in my mall, so I would walk by it all the time on my way into the mall. It's just weird not seeing it there anymore.

Yeah, it is a bit sad when a store (or chain of stores) that's been around forever goes out of business.

I'm not surprised at Sam Goody & Suncoast want a king's ransom for anything they had. I buy all my dvd's at Best Buy or China-Mart (aka Wal-Mart). Suncoast was just too darned expensive for me. I haven't been in a shopping mall for years as I find most of the stores are very overpriced.

Apparently the Suncoast in my local mall is not closing :) . That's great, although I rarely buy TV-DVD's there (they're too expensive), but I do buy movies there.

Do they have signs in the store saying they are going out of business? As far as I can see, mine doesn't have that... there are still a ton of TV-DVDs at my Suncoast. They also stock a lot more comedies than they used to before. My Suncoast is still very well-stocked.
I just feel sorry for all the people who lost their jobs at these stores. But than again, if they would've kept up with their competition, maybe they wouldn't have gone out of business.

My Suncoast in Riverside CA still had half the store left! But the problem is at 40% the stuff is still higher than DVD Planet or even Best Buy so there is no point in getting anything there.

I wish I had checked this thread alot sooner. The one mall that is in my town both had a Suncoast & Sam Goody. I hadnt been to the mall in quite awhile so a few weeks ago when I was there with hubby our Suncoast was gone but Sam Goody was still there. However they had already started there closing sale. We managed to get a bunch of DVDs cheap. We went back little over a week later & they didnt have much left but there were a few more DVDs we was able to get really cheap.

I am not surprised too much that these stores are closing. I never really bought much at either store for the main simple reason, they was just too expensive. I just couldnt get over the prices they wanted on there TV DVD sets. I could go to Walmart, Target or Best Buy & get them alot cheaper.

The last time I was in Sam Goody, they had a buch of DVD's of the movie The Honeymooners. Good lord the regluar price they had for that dvd was 29.99!!!! That is crazy. I could get it at Walmart for under 20.00. If they would have lowered there prices, I think they would have done much better.

...I went back to the mall after suncoast had its big closing, only to find suncoast still there, with a reopening sign....

they still had the same guy working their and he said the company was pretty much out of buisness, I guess they were saved by FYE because he gave me a new card, a Backstage pass card that FYE uses..lol...

...in the Woodbridge Mall, in Woodbridge/Iselin, N.J., their Suncoast store is dark, empty, and protected by a metal curtain. The facade is still up, but the store is gone.

Yeah I never understood their mentality. "We'll price 'Seinfeld' DVDs at $49.99 apiece and hope no one notices that Target and Best Buy have the same exact thing sale priced at $19.99. Duh!!" :rolleyes:

Sadly my local Sam Goody isn't listed. That means I'll miss out on getting any bargains.:( :lol:

Tower Records is next to go out of buisness, apparently, the company that owns FYE is buying some of the stores...like they did with Suncoast & Sam Goodys....
