View Full Version : Has anyone ever quit a job without having another one?
TVFactFan 03-26-2006, 12:13 PM I can't believe I'm actually thinking about quitting a job and haven;t found another one. I never been this miserable on a job in all my life. The enviroment is horrible and the managers are all related and talk sh*T about everyone in the company. The Boss is unprofessional and its just so hard to go in there each day. Anyone ever felt like this.
Jrnygrl 03-26-2006, 12:18 PM I know how you feel. I worked in an environment where it was a family owned company for six years.
I would suggest you hold out until you find something new. I spent an entire year looking for a job (they let my whole department go) and it was tough. Have you thought about going to a temp agency while you look for a permanent job?? I did and I got a permanent job with the company I was temping for. I know it can be tough when you go to work in a miserable environment, but you need money in this world.
Really think about this one. Have something to fall back on. :)
Mijada 03-26-2006, 12:26 PM I agree with Jrnygrl. Don't quit until you have another job to go to, especially if you have a lot of bills. Jobs are hard to find right now so I would just stick this one out for a while. The job you have isn't so different from a lot of jobs, at practically any workplace people are going to talk crap about other people, gossip, act immaturely etc. Sometimes you just have to deal with it. I did for many years but my bills all got paid.

I guess the thought entered my mind because I know have atleast 5 months Rent in my bank account and I keep saying to myself-"I can find another job in 2months can't I? But I think I will just hold out. Another thought thst came to mind was just quitting my professional job and just getting a 8 or $9.00 hour job at a fast food place or something part-time while I look for another professional position.
Brian Damage 03-26-2006, 12:29 PM I once quit a job with nothing to fall back on and it took me a year and a half to find a new job. You'd be better of getting fired and collecting unemployment checks for awhile than quitting and having nothing.

Yeah I thought about that too. But I think it's hard to get unemployment if you are fired isn't it?

You can't get unemployment if you quit. I don't know if they stiffened up the rules, but I remember it not being all that hard to get it.
TVFactFan 03-26-2006, 12:45 PM You can't get unemployment if you quit. I don't know if they stiffened up the rules, but I remember it not being all that hard to get it.
I know you don't get it when u quit. That's why I was saying to myself-"well since I have 7 months rent in the bank and maybe I can work part-time and looking for another full time job." You have to be fed up for things like that to come to mind
Mijada 03-26-2006, 01:25 PM Sometimes it's hard to collect unemployment if you're fired too, especially if your employer has a legit reason for letting you go. This girl was fired where I used to work and although she was able to get unemployment in the beginning, the boss took her to court and won so the girl ended up having to pay all the money back.
Janice 03-26-2006, 01:31 PM I've done it many times, but I always had a husband to fall back on. I wouldn't do it if I were you Solomon. It could take a while to get a job, and then you're really screwed.
Flipping burgers won't pay your bills and would drive you insane. I was going to suggest temping as well. That way, you get to see if the job is a good fit. You also have to consider health insurance.
I feel for you. I worked at a job 10 years ago that I hated with a passion. The salary and the benefits were great, but I was going crazy. I lasted three months. When I ended up crying at the dinner table, my husband said to just give my notice the next day, which is what I did.

I hear ya. What led to my frustration recently is on Friday they moved me out of my office into a cubicle and said they wanted to use that office as a consulting room. So that's why I been upset all weekend because I was aleady miserable but taking the office from me was just the final straw
80s_Fan 03-26-2006, 02:38 PM Yep, I have done that too many times in my past and I'm trying hard not to do that anymore. I'm currently employed and not happy but I have no choice to stick with it for now. I've learned from my past; never quit without a back up job or something else to fall back on.
ponytail 03-26-2006, 02:47 PM Please try and stay with your job. I quit a job once without having another one lined up and I was out of work for a long time. The job I have now isn't a pleasant working environment. Alot of negetive talk and favortism. Somedays isn't unbearable. But it's a job. Hang in there.
Ant-Lox 03-26-2006, 03:31 PM I did that once before, but it was for health reasons, It only took me about 2 months to find another job though....
Stick with your job until you find another one, thats the best bet......

You should do what this guy I use to work with did. He got himself fired on purpose so he can collect unemployment for the simple reason he didn't like his job or the bosses. LOL
Nighthawk76 03-26-2006, 04:42 PM In 1999 I was working at Waldenbooks and after three months I had enough of the place and just walked out. The customers were just so rude. And my manager had such an awful temper it was sacry. I always felt like I was walking on eggshells talking with her. She once went into a rage because we were out of a book a customer was looking for. After three months I had just reached my breaking point. Of course, I was in college at the time and I was only working this job to have some spending money.

Yep. I quit and I was able to receive unemployment insurance...BOTH TIMES. I quit a job and they were trying to deny me unemployment insurance; but the unemployment dept. agreed with me that I had good reason to quit at both jobs. People are shocked when I tell them this, but unless you have valid reasons and the rule of thumb with the dept. is "what would a reasonable person do in the same situation"...so even though I didn't have a job already, I was very lucky to collect unemployment benefits while searching for a new job.
dawsongirl 03-26-2006, 11:37 PM Oh yes. It had all been building up over the past couple of months. I was hired as a receptionist. That was until the boss' wife decided all of a sudden that she couldn't trust me, so she slowly gave me NOTHING TO DO BUT CLEAN THE DAMN OFFICE. I hated that lousy job. I watched 2 mechanics walk out. I came home crying every night. The boss fired his own brother!
The day I quit, I was bored, so I decided to do something my boss wife told me to do when I got the time (she told me this when I first started). She told me to look thru the computer program manual and see how to delete and/or merge clients, because some dumbass (probably the wife) had the same people in there mulitple times. So I sat and read the manual and found out how to do it, so I did. I got, and I quote, "Cathy, what are you doing?!" Like I was taking a ****ing axe to the damn thing. I told this horrid bitch exactly what I was doing and suddenly, she informs me that I should NOT be doing that because I might wreck something (the way these people dealt with things they didn't understand was just to leave it alone, not learn how to do it....dumbest thing I have ever heard in my entire life.....this is your business; LEARN IT!!) O_o. WTFH?!?!?!?!? That was it...I was sick of being miserable and these people not trusting me and talking **** about me. I grabbed my stuff like I was going to lunch, and mumbled on my way out, "My resignation letter will be on your desk this afternoon."
I went back and gave them a formal letter on my mom's advice, and I proceded to get ripped apart for all sorts of things...I was lazy, I watched TV all the time (my hypocrite boss sat and watched it with me!!!), I didn't clean anything, nothing was ever done right.... I left, drove to my mom's office, and cried violently for an hour. My mom called the sob and defended me cuz it pissed her off. He tried to hand her the same ****. She didn't take it.
Those 2 people are confirmed mental cases who deserve to be dead. I wish nothing but the worst on them. This was in July of 2004, and the experience still haunts me as if I were a crime victim. They ruined my entire mental state. I really should have sued them for harrassment or abuse or something.
Advice: Never, EVER, work for a family-run business unless you are the family. NEVER.
dawsongirl 03-26-2006, 11:41 PM I guess the thought entered my mind because I know have atleast 5 months Rent in my bank account and I keep saying to myself-"I can find another job in 2months can't I? I know this is just my opinion, but if going to work is seriously making you depressed, irritable, etc, just leave. Mental health is worth more than any job. But if it's just an annoyance that you are able to put behind you every night, then stick with it while you look.
I'm looking for a new job too, because I have a couple co-workers who have proceeded to walk all over me and screw me over, and my job is so boring, it's hell on earth...but it's not like that job up there ^^, so I'm staying while I look.

It's only hard if the company fights it I think. My aunt got fired, so she tried for unemployment, and the company tried fighting it because they didn't want to pay her. I don't know if they won or lost. According to my mom, the employeer can't legally trash you when the state calls the employeer and asks about you (which would mean they didn't really have a good reason to not give you the unemployment), but I doubt that stops people. Human Resourses people are more evil than the devil.
Ireneparalegal 03-27-2006, 01:58 PM I agree with you dawsongirl. one's mental state is worth more than any job.
The first job I quit I had done so after working three years full time and never getting a vacation. I worked weekends. I worked on Mother's day and alot of holidays that the manager and her "best friend" did not want to work. I had been developing an attitude (rightly so) and one day i checked the schedule and seen I had been put on the schedule FOR WEEKENDS ONLY. I was upset. How was I going to pay bills working less than part-time? I called the manager and she told me in a "nice way" that I had developed an attitude and that maybe I needed "time off" to work out things. So, i said "fine. yeah, I need time off"...I walked out. She tried to tell the unemployment official that i just quit on them. which was true. but the official said if I had ever been written up? NO. Had I been a good employee? YES. Had I ever NOT shown up for work without good cause? NO. Was I GIVEN FORWARNING ABT MY HOURS BEING REDUCED? NO. Had I been talked to abt my attitude? NO.
in the eyes of the official and their regulations, I had good cause to quit because i had not been TALKED TO FIRST abt what was going on (my attitude) I had not been given a written statement abt my attitude; I had not been given a written statement abt my hours being drastically reduced without written warning. So, yes, there are times one can get benefits if you quit.
Similar to the other job I had. I had been treated so badly and I quit. I was denied benefits but I APPEALED IT. The judge in this matter felt I had good cause to quit and I received my benefits.
MandieR1980 03-27-2006, 04:39 PM Yup I did it with CVS! my boss was a stupid troll who would go on rampages with everyone and I couldn't take it anymore, I quit without a job and I regret it in a way because I have no money I'm living off my tax return and I'm working on getting my driver's license which I should have had almost 10 years ago. So 99% of the time I'm stuck at home and bored
