View Full Version : I got my first ever traffic ticket last night
Mijada 03-26-2006, 08:58 AM For going 43 in a 25 zone. I'm not sure what to do. My husband says to go to court and fight it but I really don't have a good excuse for speeding except that is was late at night and I was unfamiliar with the area. I don't really want to go to court but if I don't fight it the fine is like 150 bucks and 3 or 4 points on my record. How long will that remain on my record and about how much would the insurance go up? For those who have had tickets I would really appreciate some advice. I have to call the court tommorrow morning to find out exactly what to do but I was just wondering what you guys normally do in these situations. I'm so mad at myself right now  I never had a ticket in my life till now.
swedeace 03-26-2006, 11:55 AM Sorry to hear about this annoying situation, Mijada.
What I have learned about traffic tickets is they seem to disappear off the police records, but they do linger around in court records. So, you can pay off any tickets all you want, but when you have to go to court for whatever reason, the tickets do show up. I don't know this from personal experience, but I have seen it when I once went with my sister for an accident settlement.
As painful and annoying as it is, you might wanna just fight it in court since I think you have a good reason for speeding - driving through an unfamiliar area.
Good luck on your decision.
Polniaczek033 03-26-2006, 11:59 AM I don't drive so I'm not sure what to tell you, but I have heard things similar to what swedeace said. And I agree that you have a good reason for the speeding, so I think you should fight it.
But good luck with whatever you choose. :)
Stormtracker TF 03-26-2006, 12:09 PM I agree about fighting it. I've always heard that you should try to fight a ticket because of the points you get on your record from getting one, and you sound like you might have a case.
staypuftman2004 03-26-2006, 01:41 PM As this is your first speeding ticket you can ask for court supervison you pay the fine and if you don't get a ticket within the allowed time frame the judge make it basiclly erases it from your record i have done this a couple of time.Just ask the judge for court supervison and you should be fine
Brian Damage 03-26-2006, 01:46 PM The court does make deals with individuals who fight tickets. You might have to pay a little more, but the points will be erased and that is what costs you on your insurance.
Disney Guru 03-26-2006, 01:59 PM Hi,
I got a ticket once last year, when i was out driving, and got pulled over for some odd reason. And learned i had forgotten my licence. The way i solved it was, that the next week i just walked into the county courthouse, paid the baliff and walked out.
Mijada, did you try to explain your situation to the police officer who pulled you over?

Kazza 03-27-2006, 10:25 AM I'd plead guilty and just pay the fine.
Good luck.
MsOrange 03-27-2006, 06:31 PM go to court, plead guilty, and they will lower everything. Jonathan got a ticket and he went to court and owned up to it, and they dropped the points and lowered his fee.

my boyfriend got a speeding tix and he did on-line traffic school. the traffic school then faxed a copy to the court and it is now not on his record. Depending where you live and what county, traffic schools will allow you to do their schools on-line and they will fax the certificate to the court. How damn lucky was that!? No hassles, no lines, no waiting, just take a test on-line.
