View Full Version : The 5 Second Rule...

Who here follows that "rule" abt dropping food, a cookie, whatever on the floor and picking it up and eating it since it was only on the floor for less than five seconds?

I sometimes do that. But only if it occurs here in my house. If I know my floors in the kitchen have been cleaned that same day within maybe an hour, then, I may follow that rule. If it's a cookie that fell out of the package or something like that. If it's somewhere, anywhere else, I pick it up and throw it away.

I saw a Mythbusters on it where it proved it wrong. In 5 seconds bacteria and germs can still get on it. I don't do it anymore.

If it hits the floor, I normally toss it, unless it's chocolate... ;)

it depends where it is. if i dropped something on the floor for like a second in my room i'll eat it cause it cant be that dirty, or even if it's in my house or something.

if its in the cafeteria or a restaraunt though, ill just leave it

I don't really go by how LONG it was on the floor...I go by if I actually like the food  Somethings I "may" drop on purpose:D

If it falls on the floor in our bedroom or the babys room I would pick it up and eat it because those floors are always clean and we don't allow the dogs in there. If it fell in the livingroom or kitchen I would most likely throw it away if one of the dogs didn't eat it up first.

I'm way too much of a germaphobe to eat anything that I know has fallen on the floor. I havent done that since I was like 5.

sure do... if it's something I really like it gets extended tot he 10 second rule... unless the floor is noticeably nasty/in someone elses house and they smoke or have animals or it's in a public place or something.

i don't really care. i've eaten ice cream off of a sidewalk before, so it doesn't matter to me.

Well, who's to say the floor is cleaner than your counter? Or the shelves in your cupoboards/refrigerator. Sure you can clean everything off with a rag/sponge/whatever, but there's germs even on those. Unless you have a vacuum sealed room, I don't see how there can't be bacteria anywhere.

But I usually ignore it because unless something is noticeably dirty (like if I came in the house and brought in some mud and dropped something in there), I'll pick it up. I don't want to spend my whole life being paranoid.

no one is paranoid. just asking at what point does one eat something off the floor...does it depend which part of your house? does it depend what it is that fell?

I didn't mean to come across as calling everyone paranoid, sorry. :p I'm just saying that to me, it doesn't really matter. There's probably germs everywhere, but they haven't done me any harm so far, so they'll alright with me. :D

If it hits the floor, it hits the trash barrel. My floors are clean too, but people do walk on them. I guess if I just finished cleaning the floor that minute and dropped something, then maybe, and only maybe.

What am I saying here? No way in hell.

Working in Foodservice for over 20 years I have seen cooks pick up food and given the 7 second rule their reasoning, but personally once it hits the floor clean or not it is trash.

When I lived in Milwaukee I couldn't have done that, even if I wanted to. In 5 seconds the roaches would've eaten it.

If it hits the floor, it gets chucked into the trash.

I am an excessive heath/cleanliness/neat freak. Sometimes i wonder how my parents put up with me day in and day out lol.
