It only makes sense that to avoid any conflict, anger and resentment, he should have told the kids before he told Flo abt not wanting to see her anymore. This way the kids would have known why it is he didn't want to see Flo anymore. Even though he would have lied abt being "impotent", still it would have been better to let them know since they were expecting him to propose.
