View Full Version : Who here wears or used to wear braces?
Ireneparalegal 03-21-2006, 01:57 PM I began wearing braces on my lower teeth when I was 12 and a retainer for my upper teeth. I wore those for almost 4 years. I was excited when I got my braces. The only time I didn't like it was when I had to go for my checkups and they would do the adjustments and my teeth would hurt for almost two days.
This was way back in the dayz when we had only the silver colored kind. Kids are lucky now to have the invisible and colored brackets to make it more fun and pleasing to wear.
MsOrange 03-21-2006, 02:08 PM i did for about 2 years. I'm gald I did too, i get complimented on my teeth :D
gilligan fanatic 03-21-2006, 02:10 PM I had them for about two years, I think I got them on when I was 11 or 12.
Brieannas21 03-21-2006, 02:52 PM I wore them for 2 years, I got them off just in time, I was about to start the 9th grade when I had them taken off.
Kazza 03-21-2006, 02:56 PM I wore braces for a couple of years. Like Irene, they were the big chunky silver kind ;D with the rubberbands that would turn yellow :yuck: It hurt like hell and I suffered from headaches constantly. I was very pleased with the results afterwards.
dawsongirl 03-21-2006, 02:59 PM Started with a retainer in 4th Grade, so I was 10. I remember coming home with that thing and I couldn't swallow so I laid there gagging. Then I got the braces in 5th and had them until the beginning of 8th. And I had to suffer through those horrid springs because my Orthodontist didn't think I was wearing my rubber bands enough. That was a nightmare.
And now I need my bottom teeth straightened again. pissed: However, I'll go with Invisilign this time.
~LadyJess~ 03-21-2006, 03:14 PM I got braces in the middle of 7th grade and didn't get them off until two days after Christmas in 11th grade. It was horrible to have them for so long but with how my teeth look now, it was worth it.
TVWatcher89 03-21-2006, 03:40 PM I got lucky. I didn't have to wear them. My uppers are nice and straight. My lower have a few that curl in but nothing extreme enough for braces.
I wore braces for about two years for an overbite. I hated them with a passion.
Heart Shaped Box 03-21-2006, 05:23 PM I got braces on my top teeth last year, and I just got them off this year. I actually feel kind of lucky I didn't have them on for that long, because a lot of people probably had them on for a lonngg time. But they do hurt like hell when they tighten them.
rusyd 03-21-2006, 06:13 PM I did in highschool for about 2 years.
*MIBabe03* 03-21-2006, 06:24 PM I had them for 2 years. I also had jaw surgery too while I had my braces on.
Brad Russ 03-21-2006, 06:41 PM Never. I probably should have, but I doubt we'd have been able to afford them.
PrettyinPink55 03-21-2006, 06:46 PM I used to wear them. I wore them for about two years. It was so worth it to have a pretty smile!
Karen* 03-21-2006, 08:08 PM I wore them from 2000 when I was in seventh grade to my sophomore year in 2004. It was a pain in the ass, but sooooooooo worth it. :D
YoliUSA 03-21-2006, 08:11 PM I've been wearing braces since last May. They're uncomfortalbe but I know at the end I will be satisfied with the results. ;)
I Love John Ritter 03-21-2006, 08:34 PM I despise my stupid braces. I know, I know, people tell me all the time I'll be happy with the results after I get them off, but I've had them before and I only had to get them on again. My canine grew in wrong and they had to pull it into place with a stupid chain--and yes, you can imagine the pain in that. I have such complicated teeth. When you first get your braces put on, it hurts so much for about a week. It also hurts for days after I get them tightened. The orthodontist was predicting I should get this set of braces off this April, but the last time I went in to get them tightened, he told me I'm going to have to keep them on longer. It wouldn't surprise me if I was told I had to get them a third time in the future.
I wore braces for about four years.
For those of you who have never had braces, here's how it feels.
Once a month, hit yourself in the head with a baseball bat.
That's a typical trip to the orthodonsitst.
Polniaczek033 03-21-2006, 09:16 PM never have.
i'm one of the only people i know who hasn't had them.
i need them for my top teeth but i probably won't get them.

Yeah!!!!! and forget abt eating normal food after they tighten them...it's all abt soft foods, if you can even eat at all. :(
Living In a '70's Dream 03-22-2006, 12:28 AM I wore braces from the 9th grade to 11th grade..the ugliest brace faced dork EVER!!!
swedeace 03-22-2006, 12:54 AM Nope, I've never had braces. I still would like to get braces, but some situations are preventing me from getting them in my adult life at the moment. Speaking of which, what is the age limit/circumstance of getting braces?

There is no age limit whatsoever. I am sure though if you were 80 years old what would be the point...
I have seen people in their late 30's get them. I once seen a DOCTOR who appeared to be abt 45 years old wearing braces. Cool!:D

No age limit. This interpreter that worked with me til last year will be 60 next year, and she already had braces when I started working with her two years ago. I think she got them taken off in June of last year. I forgot why she had to get them...her teeth were fine, I think it was to correct her bite.
Cashodeen 03-22-2006, 07:21 PM I had braces from age 10-14 1/2 Then a second time starting at age 21--I'm still wearing them. It'll probably be 7 years total! At least this time they're clear brackets. I have probably the most complicated orthodontic case I'll ever hear of...
ETA: This thread just got bumped so I came back. Seven weeks shy of 9 years total; amazingly had them removed only a few months after bimaxillary advancement when it’s usually 12-18 months more, otherwise it would have been 10+ years. However, it all proved to be a short-lived victory..I am very sorry, early 20s me. You had an idea, but no one listened. Thankfully no braces ever again needed, but 3-4 more jaws surgeries needed (still in the air) for a total of 8-9 jaw surgeries for a rare TMJ pathology nobody recognized. “Hinge-y go bye-bye.” (Since this is a Sitcom board, let’s keep it comical.” )
Cashodeen 03-22-2006, 07:22 PM I had them for 2 years. I also had jaw surgery too while I had my braces on.
Ooh, what jaw did you have done and what needed to be done? I'm having surgery later this year too...
EmoJoe 03-22-2006, 11:05 PM i wore them for like a year...now i wear a retainer
swedeace 03-24-2006, 01:12 AM evilNpunk, Ireneparalegal, and PZelda, thank you all for answering my question about the braces/age limit thing. That's good to know. I am interested in getting braces sometime in the future. :)
consentida 03-24-2006, 02:23 AM I wore braces for two years and I don't miss them at all.
Gizmo1 03-25-2006, 06:23 PM I had braces from the summer of 7th grade to the summer of 10th grade so I had them for 3 years. They sucked, but it was worth it.
Dude111 12-20-2023, 02:57 AM I remember when I was about 11 or so I had to wear an EXPANDER and it was aweful.... When my mom/dad turned it to make it wider,it hurt like crazy!!
One day in school my pizza got wrapped around it and I was chocking and I remember my teacher running down the hall carrying me getting me to the nurses office......
My teacher stuck her fingers in my mouth and got the pizza out while we were running down hall....... (Sadly she has passed away a few years ago)
Thank you Shiela!! -- I love you!!
ThisLittlePiggy 12-20-2023, 09:40 AM I did not wear braces but I had to wear a retainer because I had one protruding front tooth that stuck out because I used to suck my thumb. One time I wanted to clean it, to disinfect it. So I put it in boiling water and it melted/shrunk so I had to get a new one. Boy, was I dumb.
