What do you call a soft drink? When I was in the Navy, I got several different answers. Some called it pop, some called it Coke and others like myself, called it soda.

I always found it weird that somebody would be drinking a Pepsi, and they'd call it a Coke. lol

what u said abt people who drink pepsi and call it coke reminds me of kleenex tissue. Kleenex is the brand name, but people will say "do you have kleenex?" same thing with tylenol. tylenol is the brand name and whenever I have been asked for painkiller, it's almost always tylenol. As if that is the new name for aspirin or painkiller.

We call it tonic or soda at home. If I'm getting someone a glass of orange tonic or ginger ale, I'll call it tonic. If it's Coke or Pepsi, I call it coke.

The same thing can be said about Jello. Everybody calls it Jello, when in fact, Jello is just a brand name of gelatin.

Pop absolutely CRUSHES the competition, hands down.

My gf claims I sound like someone from the 1950s when I say pop, but I think it's the other way around for her saying SODA. I mean in the 50s, they had soda fountains, soda jerks, etc.

According to the nice little geographic breakdown, Warren Co., KY [WKU] is an 80-100% "coke" area. The area i'm from in the state, natively, is an 80-100% "pop" area.

I say soda.

This is one of the few matters in which northern and western Kentucky side with the South on an issue, and where the southern and eastern portions of the state side with the Midwest and Northern Pacific. It's almost ALWAYS a South/East = South, North/West = Midwest breakdown).

California/Arizona/Northeast US/Eastern Missouri/Western Illinois/Eastern Wisconsin know what to call their fizzy beverages!

Soda.

To me, "pop" sounds like the paternal parent or a grandfather. And "coke" sounds like the Coca-Cola name brand.
