J.Lo Does "Dallas" (Maybe) By Sarah Hall
1 hour, 38 minutes ago

The big-screen remake of Dallas is hoping to strike oil with an all-star cast.

Director Robert Luketic has offered Jennifer Lopez, John Travolta, Luke Wilson and Shirley MacLaine lead roles in the upcoming picture, according to Daily Variety.

While no deals are yet in place, all of the thesps are reportedly expected to sign on, meaning production on the long-gestating film could commence in October.

J.Lo, who previously worked with Luketic on Monster-in-Law, would play Sue Ellen Ewing, the alcoholic and adulterous wife of J.R. Ewing, who was originally played by Linda Gray in the primetime soap, which aired from 1978-91. If Lopez accepts the role, it work mark a return to studio fare after shooting a pair of back-to-back independent films.

Travolta has been offered the role of J.R., the oil baron played by Larry Hagman, whose shooting in the final episode of the 1979-80 season, "A House Divided," inspired the legendary pop culture slogan, "Who Shot J.R.?" The answer, revealed Nov. 21, 1980, in the episode "Who Done It?" generated one of the biggest television audiences in history, with 83 million viewers tuning in to learn that Sue Ellen's sister, Kristin, shot her brother-in-law in a fit of anger.

Casting the part of J.R. was reportedly the biggest challenge faced by the filmmakers, and Kevin Costner and Mel Gibson were other names in consideration for the role, according to Variety.

Wilson is currently in negotiations for the role of Bobby Ewing, originally played by Patrick Duffy, and MacLaine has been offered the role of Miss Ellie Ewing, the family matriarch, originally played by Barbara Bel Geddes.

Meanwhile, with plans heating up for the film's production, the people of Dallas are pushing hard to have Dallas shot within their city's limits.

The Dallas Film Commission has launched the "Shoot J.R. in Dallas" campaign, in the hopes of luring 20th Century Fox to make the film in Texas, as opposed to non-Lone Star sites also in consideration.

"The thought of Dallas being made in Toronto is not a good idea," Mayor Laura Miller told reporters.

Dallas officials estimate that the film would generate $30 million for the local economy, along with jobs and publicity.

However, with film commissioners in states including Florida and Louisiana, as well as Canada, making bids to have the movie shot on their turf, the end location may ultimately be determined by budgetary concerns.

In February, Dallas coproducer Michael Costigan told the Dallas Morning News that he would rather "make the whole film in Dallas."

"It?s now going to come down to really making the numbers work with our studio," he said.

Though the Texas legislature passed a bill last year to offer movie producers up to a $750,000 rebate for production costs, the initiative remains unfunded, while both Florida and Louisiana have programs in place offering more attractive financial incentives.

But Dallas officials aren't giving up just yet. The city is hoping to generate funds from the private sector to boost incentives and has urged residents to shell out for "Shoot J.R. in Texas" merchandise, including hats, stickers and T-shirts.

I saw that earlier today. This movie is going to suck I'm afraid. I also don't think John Travolta is right as JR. I was hoping Bruce Willis would get it. :(

I think we have another Dukes Of Hazzard coming up. Why do the movie studios want to ruin the reputations of classic tv shows? I also hear Welcome Back Kotter is coming to the big screen starring Ice Cube.

After seeing J-Lo in Monster-in-law I think she could pull it off. (Don't hit me.....................). ;)

Now........ Travolta... He has to do a real mean J.R. for this to work. I liked the idea of Bruce Willis doing it.

Anyway............. whatever happens.... I'll be seeing this movie. Oh and Shirley McLaine is perfect for Ms. Ellie.

Did you all see the reunion show CBS had several months back with Victoria? It was great to see her there. I wish she had never left the show. It went downhill after that.

I saw it. It was great. They totally blew that story after she left and then they recast her for one episode and even had a Pam look-alike in a few more. The show got worst each season after she left as more of the original cast left the show.

What was even more out of this world was when Bobby married April!!!   That was unbelievable. The Bobby character wouldn't have married her...his taste got worst after Pam.

I won't hit you, but I will disagree with you. I've seen some of J.Lo's movies and I'm sorry, but the girl can't act. She is the same in every role she plays. Same tone of voice, same attitude. She is a one-note actress. I also feel the same way about George Clooney, who gets by with the same monotone and smirking nod that is apparently supposed to pass for acting ability.

Shirley MacLaine is an accomplished actress who could wipe the floor with J.Lo if they ever had an acting contest.

This movie is a bad idea to begin with and bringing in J.Lo just makes it worse. It jumps the shark even before one frame of film is shot.

Just my two cents.

The old JR never would have gotten himself thrown in jail in some hick town. I couldn't stand it when they made him so stupid in the later seasons.

LONDON - British director Gurinder Chadha announced Friday that she would direct John Travolta and Jennifer Lopez in a big-screen version of 80s TV show "Dallas."

The "Bend it Like Beckham" director said she had signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to direct the film, which will star Travolta as villainous oil magnate J.R. Ewing and Lopez as his wife Sue Ellen.

In a statement, Chadha said her appointment meant that the sort of South Asian-themed British films that made her name had "huge credibility and respect in Hollywood."

Chadha, who gave Jane Austen a Bollywood twist in last year's "Bride and Prejudice," is also involved with adapting another TV hit, 60s sitcom "I Dream of Jeannie." She said that film "is still in the pipeline, but there is still some way to go on the script."

Filming on "Dallas" is due to start in October, with the movie slated for a late 2007 release.

Yeah, I agree. There were some silly storylines involving J.R. in the last couple of seasons. Like many long-running shows, once Dallas lost key characters like Miss Ellie, Pam & Sue Ellen, they had to replace them and they brought in these younger characters to probably entice younger viewers, but the core of the show had been chipped away at.

The show probably ran about two or three seasons longer than it should have.
