I wonder why people would bother with "shortened" names that have the SAME exact number of syllables as thier whole name. There are even nicknames that have even MORE syllables than the full name!:eek: :rolleyes:

"Shortened Nicknames"

Judy for Judith
Wacko Jacko for Michael Jackson
Sandy for Saundra, Sandra, or Sondra
Tommy for Thomas
Danny for Daniel(depending on how you pronounce the name daniel)
Andy for Andrew
Mikey for Michael


"Longer" Nicknames

1.Jimmy for James
2.Charlie or Chucky for Charles

Well, not all nicknames are intended to be a shortened version of the birth certificate name. Some are descriptive (Wacko Jacko), some are informal (Jimmy for James).

What I don't quite get are the nicknames that are a completely different name. Why not simply name your child the name you plan to use?

Examples:

Calling someone 'Sally' when you named her 'Sarah.'

Calling someone 'Harry' when you named him 'Henry.'
