View Full Version : My mom's having heart surgery on Wednesday, please pray for her!!
Brad Russ 03-13-2006, 05:00 AM My mom went in for a routine checkup a few months back, and found out she needed heart surgery, and she'll be going in to get the surgery done on Wednesday. This will be her second heart surgery. She had the first one when she was three years old. Basically the reason she has to have it done again, is because her heart valve isn't big enough, and the blood hasn't been properly flowing to her lower extremeties. The doctor figured out something might be wrong when he felt how cold her feet were. Anyway, there are many people and Churches who will be praying for her, but I also just wanted to ask all the good people here at S.O. to please pray for her as well. I love my mom very much, she's my best friend, and your prayers would be appreciated beyond words!! Thank You!!! :)

Fleet 03-14-2006, 01:23 AM I hope the operation is a huge success!
Here is some info I found in one of my medical books (if this is the surgery you are referring to):
Heart-valve replacement
Definition- Replacement of one or more diseased heart valves with mechanical valves.
Reasons for surgery- Prevention of complications resulting from valvular heart disease, especially congestive heart failure and baterial endocarditis.
Diagnostic tests-
- Before surgery- blood and urine studies, x-rays of kidneys and chest, EKG.
- During surgery- EKG monitor.
- After surgery- blood studies.
Average hospital stay- 20 days (may be less these days, medical book is from 1989).
- Probable outcome- Expect complete healing without complications. Allow about 4 weeks for recovery from surgery.
Chocoholic 03-14-2006, 06:05 PM I'll keep you and your family in my prayers :)

Brad Russ 03-14-2006, 11:29 PM Thanks everybody. My mom's surgery is tomorrow morning around 8:00 am, so I probably won't be around much over the next five days or so. She's expected to be in the hospital for about 5 days after the surgery, and then she'll be taking the next 8 weeks off for recovery. Thanks again though for your prayers everyone!!! It is very much appreciated by my whole family. I'm going to be pretty busy over the next few days, but I will definitely keep you all updated as best I can. Talk to you all later!! :bighug:

Pitooey 03-15-2006, 06:59 PM How is your Mom? Is she doing well?
Shiki Minami 03-15-2006, 08:03 PM I hope she's feeling okay!
Brad Russ 03-16-2006, 04:23 AM Hey everybody, I just thought I'd stop in and give you an update on my mom. We took her in around 8:00 this morning, and her surgery started around 11:00am, just after she had a little rest. The surgery was successfully completed around 4:00 pm. The doctor said the surgery went much easier then he had originally anticipated, which was a huge relief for everyone to hear. There was alot of scar tissue they had to deal with since the last time she had the surgery she was only 3, so that was probably there biggest optical. But yeah, so they opened her blood valve to it's appropriate size, and she will now be getting the blood flow throughout her whole body, that she should have been getting for years now. This should make her quality of life much better now, as she probably won't be so tired all the time, and she should feel alot more healthy and energetic, and feel much less pain.
I was not able to see her tonight unfortunately, because the doctor said she's so drugged up that she most likely wouldn't recognize me. But I will be going back tomorrow to see her, and he said she should be in a much better state of mind then. She won't be able to talk, because she'll have feeding tubes in her, but she should be aware of people, and her surroundings by that time. Suffice to say, I'm really excited about seeing her. Like I mentioned before, she'll be spending 5 days in the hospital, before being allowed to come home. She's gotten two months off from work to recover, and I plan to be there to help her along in her day to day life every step of the way. My brother also got off two weeks paid leave to take care of her, so she'll be in good hands. I plan on spoiling her, as I already joined Netflix so I can rent her all the movies she's been wanting to see. It'll be nice having two months to spend with her, and to take care of her. I'm looking forward to that!! :)
Once again though, I want to thank you all, both the people who responded to this thread, as well as to the people who responded in other ways. I love you all so much, and I know for a fact that your prayers have helped in not only pulling her through, but also in alot of the stuff prior to her surgery. She was way behind on bills, and because of God, right before her surgery she paid off all her debts, and is now getting $400.00 extra a month. So now, all she has to deal with is her recovery, and not all that other junk that life can sometimes throw at us. Your prayers have been good, and God has certainly been good. My mom is not out of the woods yet, as the next 8 week will be crucial in her recovery, so if you would, please keep her in your prayers. Thank you so much!!
And now I want to thank everyone individually. Firstly, I want to thank Janice for her incredible love and support over the last few months. Your love has astounded me, as you have really been a prayer warrior for my mom, and I will be forever grateful to you for that. And thank you so much for the beautiful card you sent my mom. As you know, it touched her deeply, and made her cry, and meant so very much to her!! You're the best Janice.
I also want to send much thanks to Tara AKA LivinInA70'sdream, who has been by my side, and praying for my mom since I first told her of her problems months ago. Your dedication and sweetness has touched myself, and my mom greatly, and I know God heard your words. You are a beautiful person on both the inside and outside, and I am honoured to call you friend.
To Jen78, I know you have been going through some rough times with your mom lately as well, and I just want you to know that she is still in my prayers. I hope everything turns out good with her,and I wish for a speedy recovery. Thank you so much for your thoughts and prayers Jen!! You are such a sweet person, and I am honored to to have you as a friend.
And of course Irene. You have such a way with words, and always know how to make a guy feel better when he's feeling down. Thank you so much for being there for me to go to over these difficult months, and for always putting a smile on my face, and a laugh in my belly. You're a sweetheart, and I will forever hold your beautiful words in my heart!!
To Jonathan, I want to thank you as well for your kind thoughts and words through this tough time, and want to say, thanks for always being there. I'm so glad we became myspace buddies. I'm honoured to call you a friend!! You are a great guy.

Well, I'm about out the door right now to go see her. I don't drive, and don't have anyone who can take me today, so I'll have to take the Max. I haven't ridden on the max in years because of my agoraphobia, but it'll be worth it once I get up there and see her. I'll be sure to let you all know how she's doing when I get home.
Thanks again everyone. I'll be thinking of you all on the trip up there to calm my nerves. TTYL!!

Brad Russ 03-17-2006, 04:35 PM Hey everyone, just thought I'd let you know that I saw my mom yesterday, and she's doing great. I had about a 5 or 6 hour visit with her, and aside from the terrible pain in her back from the stiches, she was in high spirits. She's even been walking around. :D She should be home in no time at all. I just wanted to say one more time, thank you so much for everyone for all your love and support!! You are all very special to me. God Bless You All!!!

Cashodeen 03-17-2006, 08:41 PM I'm glad to hear the surgery was so successful. And it's also great she'll be home soon. Her hospital stay is a lot better than what Fleet's old book said. It's so wonderful she'll finally be feeling well now that her heart will be functioning much better.
passionsfan79 03-18-2006, 12:04 PM Same here,Sounds like something I had when I was little to. And had a hole in my heart. Then in 2004 I find out I had to have another heart surgery,Which was a valve replacement. I wasnt in any pain or anything which I was thankful for that
Brad Russ 03-19-2006, 05:10 PM Hey everybody, another update on my mom. She was suppose to come home today, but unfortunately she has a fluid build up in her lung, and so she has to have another proceedure done to take care of that. They don't want her getting pnemonia or something. They had to collapse one of her lungs for the original heart surgery, which is most likely why she's having this problem now. This is much less serious than her heart surgery was, so with all your prayers, I'm sure she'll be okay. I'll be sure to let you all know how things go.

I'm so sorry to hear that your mom is going thru this; hope she will feel better real soon. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. :bighug:
Brad Russ 03-20-2006, 11:00 PM Hey guys, thanks so much for continuing to keep my mom in your prayers. I know from experience that it can be easy at times to get prayer fatigue, and the fact that you guys' are still praying for her is extremely heartwarming, (no pun intended, ;)), to both my mom and I. Thank you so very much!!!!! :)
To update you all, things are definitely looking much better. When they took her in to do the proceedure to clear her lung out, they were surprised to find there was no excess liquid. So she had to wait around for the next two days until they did a scan or whatever it's called, to see what's up. I spent the night there with her last night in hopes of being there when they did the scan, but they did it today a couple hours aftr I left, and have decided that they'll either give her medicine to take care of the problem, or have her cough whatever it is out. I'm still pretty much in the fog when it comes to exactly what the problem in her lungs is, but my hope is that it is just a build up of phlemn or something.
So anyway, that's a little update for you all. I can tell you though that she looked, and sounded much better when I saw her last night. Her blood pressure is lower then ever, and the swelling is going down, so things are definitely looking up, so I'm happy about that. I'll let you all know when they finally let her come home.
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 03-20-2006, 11:11 PM I'm so glad that things are going well :)
ponytail 03-21-2006, 06:19 AM I'm glad to hear your mom is getting better!
MsOrange 03-21-2006, 12:59 PM :woohoo: glad to hear everything is going in a positive directions!!!
Brad Russ 03-21-2006, 02:07 PM Well, if it's not one thing, it's something else. ohno: They were all set to release her today, her lungs are now fine, but then they found that one of her blood vessels had been torn, which they'll be fixing either tonight or tomorrow. So, it looks like atleast a few more days in the hospital for her. My poor mom is going through so much right now, but she's strong, and continuously shows that strength each and every day. She's definitely the strongest person I know!!
I just thank God that they found this before letting her go, or else God only knows what could have happened. This blood vessel thing is about a 45 minute proceedure, and it should turn out fine, but had they not caught it and let her go, things would not have been good.
I just want to once again thank I Walk The Line, TF, DAX, Karen, Janice, Jen, 80_sFan, Pleasant Tomorrow, ponytail, MsOrange, and everyone else I had previously thanked for your continued support through this very stressful time for my family. I have no doubt in my mind that through your prayers, the doctors have been able to find all of these things, which they otherwise might not have found had it not been for all your prayers, so thank you so very much for that!! You guys are TRULY the best!! And thanks to everyone who offered a hug!! I could really use one about now!!
Anyway, I'm sorry I keep on bringing more bad news to you all, but I just wanted to be sure to keep you all up to date. I know it kind of sucks when someone's keeping you up to date on something, and then they suddenly stop, and you end up never knowing how things turned out. That won't happen with me though. I will keep you all up to date until my mom is home, healthy, and comfortable. :)
dandelion wine 03-21-2006, 04:30 PM You can be sure that I'll also keep her in my prayers. :bighug:

*Pleasant Tomorrow* 03-21-2006, 10:20 PM Ugh, sorry there's still more to worry about. I'm glad they found out in time, though.

Brad Russ 03-25-2006, 06:39 PM Yaay, she's home. She surprised us all, and came home around 12:00 this afternoon. :D She looks great, sounds great, and has all her medication, so she's relatively pain free. I, my brother, and my mom's boyfriend plan on taking very good care of her.
Once again, I want to thank all who prayed, and sent good thoughts her way. I know for a fact that that was a big part of what pulled her through. Thank you everybody!!!!! My mom will be in good hands!!! :thanks:
