Awhile ago I had asked if anyone recalled a mystery concerning a woman being murdered at an ATM, and the ATM camera capturing a glimpse of the killer. No one seemed to recall it.

It first aired on September 12, 1990 and in the TV Guide for that week it stated:

A new segment examines the search for a man who killed a woman at an automatic-teller machine.

I found another description of this case in TV Guide and it said it took place in Palo Alto. Does anyone recall this case? I vaguely remember Lifetime airing it, but it has been a long long time. I also recall the woman killed, was African American.

Anyone recall this?

The only case I can think of that comes close was the 1988 murder of Gretchen Burford (although she was white, and the murder suspect was black). She was stabbed with a knife, and as she crawled out of her car, he told two eyewitnesses that "he stabbed me." (In case you're wondering, the segment is not available on DVD.)

In 2005, a man was arrested and charged with Gretchen's murder. Here's an article on that update:

Yeah, that's the only one that I can think of, too.

I tihink the segement you are referring to is the young guy named Matthew Chase. He lived in California with 2 friends from his hometown . He went to deposit a paycheck and the ATM surv. camera caught some schlep in the picture. He was found in a ravine a year or so later. He borrowed his roomates car to run the errand and the car was found on the side of a road. the only other clue was a bandana that was left in the car after it was found. The ATM video was pretty grainy and the comp. sketch was not really helpful. hope this helps.

I've confirmed that the segment that aired on September 12, 1990 was the Gretchen Burford case, it took place in Palo Alto and I have it on VHS.

However, the case that I'm thinking of is still indeed an unsolved mystery. I distinctally recall that the image of the killer was captured on the ATM camera. It was not the Matthew Chase case, I have that episode on VHS as well.

I have the Matt Chase episode on VHS as well. The Burford case was depressing. I thought they had caught the guy who did it? I could swaer I saw an update on it.

Well, they only made an arrest in the Burford case. And there was an update on the Matthew Chase case: it the was announcement that his body had been found.

Finding that out was a bummer. I remember watching that segment and I got really excited when there was an update because I thought that it might have meant that they captured the guy who kidnapped Matthew Chase. It's so sad, too, considering that he tried to signal for help with the ATM. (It WAS him who was keying in more money than he was allowed to take out, right? And they hit three different ATM's before the card was taken?)

They found the young man's body according to a UM update. But, they have yet to catch the killer.
