back in the day when crank--wall phones were used

the b battery was the power source

it was similar to a soda can , just a little smaller

when i was a kid, we had a crank wall phone, you would crank it up, the operator would say--number please

and then she would connect you

the wall phones were about the size of the current wall pay phones at gas stations

you had to talk into the wall box, no laying on the couch and talking

you needed to stand up, so calls were pretty brief

ours was a dark oak, a real beauty

i saw one like it at an antique mall last summer, for $500

batteries werent included

im 51, but i grew up in a rural farm area in central wisconsin

we had one tv channel until 1969

we had the wall phone until 1959, and then we got a desk phone with no dial

we had a party line with 8 total families

we all heard everyones rings

ours was one long 3 second ring

others has combos of long and short rings

but everyone heard all the rings, on every call

we ended up getting a real dial phone in about 1968, but still had the 8 party line

as private lines , were unavaible in the rural area


we also had metered phone rates, so every minute on the phone was a certain cost

i had about 6 minutes total of telephone experience in my days on the family farm

i remember in first grade, we had a lesson on how to use the telephone, very few of the kids ever had used one

i always laugh whe little house comes on and they had a telephone in the 1890s, ya right, especialy in the rural area they were in, get real

Living and growing up in Brooklyn was like paradise. I lived in a six floor apartment house with about 8 tennants per floor, so a phone was not needed. You just knocked and said "is Johnny home"

The one item you carried at all times, that is if you were able to scrounge up15 cents, the cost of a "spaldeen". That allowed you to go in the streets and that's were you spent your days, to play, stick ball on the bounce, single, double triple, hand ball , Chinese hand ball, stoop ball, errors, hit the penny, punch ball, box ball , box baseball. What games!, the intensity was great. Ebbetts field, home of the Dodgers was only 5 blocks away but you had the streets. Girls used the "spaldeen to play "potsie, and some game where they bounced their leg over the ball. If a mom wanted a kid, no phone call, she opened the window and screamed your name, and good grief, you better have come home.

No internet, no tv, no nothing but we had fun, you had to interact with others, and when it rained, you sat on one of the floors of the building and played, checkers, monoply, Ethan Allen baseball, hide and seek etc.

Sure do. Off the wall was another name for single, double, triple. We usually played two to a side. One team was up and one was in the field like in baseball. The first player through the little pink ball off the wall. To be fair it had to pass a mark on the ground. If it didn't it was out. Now if it did, one of the fielders had to catch it on a fly to record a out. If not and it bounced once before you picked it, it was a single, twice a double etc. Three outs a inning like baseball. Some great games were played. Simple as anything but gave hours of enjoyment. As more kids came you switched to punch ball, slap ball or stick ball, of course once you got tired or sweaty, you stopped to have your Mission brand, grape or Orange or Root beer sodas. Soda was 8 cents and you gave Irving the candy store owner 10 cents as there was a 2 cent deposit on the bottle. Some day I'll tell you about egg creams and Lime Rickeys, and Charlotte Russes, and Charleston Chews, Almond Joys, Bonamo turkish taffy, Ju ju fruits, Black Crows, Chuckles, red hots, Mary Janes, Baby Ruths, Peanut Brittle etc.

Wonderful times growing up in those 20's. "Silent Cal", was elected president, the depression was years away, and all those flappers. You never thought there was a depression with all the beer flowing. Let me tell ya, Ness was a nobody. But thru it all we played stickball. The late teens is a little foggy, but the early 20's with Al singing Swanee, and Toot toot Tootsie, that was my time.

I like to play straight up, so let me give you the whole scoop. Before Chris went to sail, he asked me what to bring in the way of snacks, so I told him, that I thought prunes would be the perfect snack. So he loaded up with them. Bottom line is this potty seat got plenty of tear and wear. In fact in some spots it's rubbing thru. Also when Chris thought he was lost he would relax on the potty seat, more wear and tear. Like they taught me on Antique road show, I never polished. It still maintains it's original luster.

I grade it a 8.5, with some spots as low as 7.0. I don't know how to explain this but the trip to the new world took longer then expected and they ran out of toilet paper.

I'm not looking for scammers but only interested traders. I can box it up with a can of aerosol and ship saturday.
