Settle something between my wife and I please: In the Convicts at Large episode, Big Maude (the ringleader of the 3 girl gang), is she the same actress that played Barnie's voice lesson teacher Elinora Poltis?
I say no but the wife says yes.... who gets the braggin rights LOL?

It's the same actress. Her name was Reta Shaw (1912-1982). She appeared as Big Maude in "Convicts At Large" and as Barney's voice teacher Eleanora Poultice in "The Song Festers" episode.

Reta Shaw was a fine character actress. She also had recurring roles on MR.
PEEPERS, BEWITCHED, THE TAB HUNTER SHOW, THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR,
and several other TV shows.

That was a great episode, poor Barney having to dance with big Maude. He'd get almost to the cabin door and she'd turn them around & go the other way. It was so funny.

Reta Shaw also appeared in the Don Knotts film "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".

when i first saw the name Maude i thought Bea Arthur was on this one as Maude Findley

When she got a good role with good lines she got every laugh possible. In Mr. Chicken she did a full body faint backwards that was clearly her and she's not even the focus of the shot. She really gave it her all. She was a gem of an actress. She was wonderful.

Similarly, I thought perhaps He's Arthur was appearing as a guest character visiting Mayberry, as so many future stars did, Barbara Eden, Bill Bixby, Jack Nicholson and so on.
