View Full Version : Great Casts/Failed Sitcoms
jennymcc 03-01-2006, 06:08 PM I was watching "Mr. President" the other day and thought how great that cast was: George C. Scott, Madeline Kahn, Conrad Bain. And got to think how many other failed sitcoms had such stellar casts?
Another that comes to mind: "The Ellen Show" (1991), Ellen Degeneres, Chloris Leachman, Martin Mull.
Any others?
jennymcc 03-01-2006, 06:10 PM Replying to my own message after noticing MY OWN avatar!!! DUH!
"George and Leo" Bob Newhart, Judd Hirsch, Jason Bateman!!
A current show that will probably be put into the "failed" category very soon would probably be "Joey."
Great cast, but things just didn't click.
Two of my favorite shows that never got great audience numbers featured amazing casts. "The Job" with Denis Leary, and "SportsNight," starring Felicity Huffman.
Janice 03-01-2006, 09:59 PM I liked the actors on Good Morning Miami. I can't think of their names, but it was a good cast.

Madness 03-02-2006, 01:01 AM I would totally have to say the one that sticks out in my head is Center of the Universe--John Goodman, Olympia Dukakis, Diedrich Bader, Spencer Breslin, Jean Smart, Melinda McGraw, Ed Asner.
All names I've heard of, most of them pretty big names...HORRIBLE show. Just goes to show how the writing is so important on a sitcom!
Mr. Television 03-02-2006, 01:19 AM If Crumbs doesn't last it won't be because of the cast...Fred Savage, Jane Curtin and William Devane.

Please Janice, don't get me started on Good Morning Miami!
;)
Adamantium 03-02-2006, 05:43 PM I'll back up "George & Leo". I loved that show.
Also,
The Tick
Also,
The Tick
That's true. There were lots of funny people on that great short lived show.
snl 70s show fan 03-02-2006, 08:05 PM I liked the actors on Good Morning Miami. I can't think of their names, but it was a good cast.i agree it was one of my fave shows

Another current show that's full of great people but is a big ol mess is "Courting Alex." The leads are all appealing, but the show is just not funny.

The Ellen Show was from 1999...
troopoleon8897 03-02-2006, 09:34 PM Pretty much any short lived show from ABC in the 90's...
All-American Girl - Margot Cho
Thunder Alley - Ed Asner
The Jackie Thomas Show - Tom Arnold
Buddies - Dave Chappel
Soul Man - Dan Ackroid
Over The Top - Tim Curry
and many, many more...
Madness 03-03-2006, 02:59 AM I liked Soul Man. It was a pretty funny show but was axed I remember hearing because it didn't fit in with the current sitcoms they were airing. It's too bad because it had potential.
treky 03-03-2006, 03:43 AM The Ellen Show was from 1999...no it wasn't; it was from 2000. I remember, cause it replaced the first half of the CBS revival of "The Fugitive" on fridays.

"Joey" HAS been put into the "failed" category. I read that NBC has cannceled it, and will probably "burn off" the remaining episodes during the summer. They were going to bring it back this month; but decided not to.

I stand corrected. My fingers were crossed that the show would get a stay of execution, but I guess I can cancel the candlelight vigil.
Another show from a few yearsa back that fialed despite a good cast was the short lived CBS comedy "Bram And Alice," which featured Alfred Molina, Traylor Howard and no scriptwriters.
;)

NO SCRIPTWRITERS??? What'd they do, ad-lib the entire show?
NO SCRIPTWRITERS??? What'd they do, ad-lib the entire show?
That probably would have been funnier than what they what passed for a script on that show.
;)
ky24943 03-03-2006, 05:43 PM My favorite failed sitcom with a great cast was Quintuplets
gilligan fanatic 03-03-2006, 06:03 PM I have never seen it, but the Pruitts of South Hampton looks like it could be ok.
Phyllis Diller, Marty Ingels, Charles Lane, Richard Deacon, John Astin.

I would agree that it's pretty much in the failed category by now, but NBC has not canceled it yet, and it is coming back this month (next Tuesday, in fact), not during the summer.

Yeah I already said that up top... no problem though...
APPLEI 03-04-2006, 11:46 AM "George and Leo" Bob Newhart, Judd Hirsch, Jason Bateman!!
i agree with that one!
but i would like to add "hello larry" to the list i thought it had one of the best cast's ever on a sitcom.
"franks place" great cast, great sitcom that cbs should've stuck with.
"all is forgiven" it aired march 1986 to june 1986 so i doubt that most of you have ever heard of it,but take my word for it
great cast, great sitcom and besides i had a crush on its star bess armstrong!
"the associates" a sitcom that aired after mork and mindy for a while that i thought was excellent.
maybe i'm not answering the question correctly,but i don't care:D
factsoflife 03-06-2006, 02:05 AM Happy Family with Christine Baranski and John Laroquette had a great cast but was just awful.
Ditto, Jean Smart's The In-Laws.
TheLurkerKing 03-26-2006, 07:40 PM "Best of the West"
Joel Higgins
Carlene Watkins
Meeno Pulce
Leonard Frey
Tracey Walter
Christopher Lloyd
and
Tom Ewell.
You hardly can get a better cast then that in a show that lasted less then one season.
Madness 03-26-2006, 11:20 PM I got to thinking of another one. Norm. I liked it but the ratings were not all that great and it should've lasted a little longer than it did.
troopoleon8897 03-27-2006, 07:57 AM I got to thinking of another one. Norm. I liked it but the ratings were not all that great and it should've lasted a little longer than it did.
Yeah it did have a pretty good cast, Norm McDonald, Laurie Metcalf, Ian Gomez, and The Father From Alf, however it did air 3 seasons so its not ecactly a failed sitcom...
Here's a few that I thought of. I had to look them up to find the cast and all of them certainly qualify as great casts in failed sitcoms. Remember these?
The Fanelli Boys (1990)
Ann Morgan Guilbert (Millie Helper from "The Dick Van Dyke Show")
Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU)
Joe Pantoliano (The Sopranos)
Square Pegs
Sarah Jessica Parker ("Sex and the City")
Jami Gertz ("Still Standing")
Tracy Nelson (daughter of Ricky; from "Father Dowling Mysteries")
When Things Were Rotten (1975)
My personal favorite. Created by Mel Brooks.
Dick Gautier ("Get Smart")
Bernie Kopell ("Get Smart", "The Love Boat")
Dick Van Patten ("Eight Is Enough")
Best Of The West
Joel Higgins ("Silver Spoons")
Tom Ewell ("The Seven Year Itch", "The Girl Can't Help It")
Christopher Lloyd ("Taxi", "Back To The Future")
Angie
Donna Pescow ("Saturday Night Fever")
Robert Hays ("Airplane")
Doris Roberts ("Everybody Loves Raymond")
Ned and Stacey
Thomas Haden Church ("Wings")
Debra Messing ("Will and Grace")
Greg Germann ("Ally McBeal")
And now for my pick as the all-time champ....
The Powers That Be (1993)
David Hyde Pierce (who went to "Frasier" one year later)
Joseph Gordon Levitt (Tommy from "3rd Rock From The Sun")
John Forsythe ("Dynasty")
Holland Taylor ("Bosom Buddies", "Two and a Half Men")
Peter MacNicol ("Ally McBeal")
SBTB Geek 04-01-2006, 03:10 AM "Out of Practice" is seen as a failrure already, but you can't deny that it has a great cast--with great chemistry (which is even more important.)
Another one I just thought of was Arrested Development. Despite its many awards, all the rave reviews that it's received, and some talented people in the cast, (Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia DeRossi, Ron Howard as narrator) it has only lasted for 2.5 seasons and 57 episodes. I would consider that a failure, or at the very least, a big disappointment!
Chain Gang Member 04-06-2006, 01:59 PM Life On A Stick
Quintuplets
ROck Me Baby
Gross Pointe
Zoe,Duncan,Jack & Jane
Mister Ed 04-06-2006, 06:52 PM The Golden Palace had a great cast... but it failed. :(

SBTB Geek 04-08-2006, 01:16 AM Don't forget about Off Centre
I spent a month in Mexico a few years back and this show was a big hit over there.
Ant-Lox 04-09-2006, 12:46 PM The Naked truth had a great cast during the first season, but after that they changed so many characters and the show's direction changed....
Central Perk 04-09-2006, 01:54 PM Andy Richter Controls the Universe
Jakebert 04-09-2006, 05:03 PM I don't know if you'd technically call it a failure since it was on for a few seasons, but NewsRadio had an excellent cast and never really got the attention that it deserved. Those characters played off of each other perfectly.
LuLu Rogers 03-31-2010, 04:08 PM Over the Top starring Tim Curry and Annie Potts. I loved this show, can't believe only 3 out of 12 episodes aired on ABC.
MikeLutton 03-31-2010, 05:52 PM Bagdad cafe with Jean stapelton and whoppi goldberg that was a good show jean kind of acted like edith a bit but then the show got cancelled.royal family was good to wish Golden palace lasted
factsoflife 03-31-2010, 08:01 PM One show that comes to mind is "Anything But Love" which starred Jamie Lee Curtis and Richard Lewis. The show aired for four seasons but was constantly changing it's premise and cast. Only Curtis and Lewis remained throughout the series entire run.
There were several very good cast memebers on this show including Sandy Faison and Anne Magnunson who weren't given enough time to develop their characters before they were dropped. Also the show featured for a time character actor Bruce Weitz.
Marvo301 03-31-2010, 08:30 PM I'm Dickens, He's Fenster: John Astin, Marty Ingels, Emmaline Henry, David Ketchum

i didn't know that show was still on TV- i thought it was cancelled after 2 seasons! it's one of the worst sitcoms i have ever seen.

It was cancelled after 2 seasons. Treky's post is from 2006.

I FK'ING LOVED THAT SHOW AS A KID. As a matter of fact it was my favorite show that year. I recently found like a 7 minute segment of an episode somewhere online and LMAO again. I think this show enlightened me about the general ignorance of the average television watcher.
I have always wondered if there is anyway to buy these one season shows from distributors or from the network themselves. This show has probably sat on some warehouse shelf the last 30 years.
Yong Fang 04-09-2010, 11:12 AM My personal choice is "Twenty Good Years" with John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor. It lasted four episodes.
Did anyone see this show. I read a review that it was horrible, but it had those two great actors in it.
R.jsheedy 04-09-2010, 04:13 PM only one off the top of my head is Back To You... Kelsey Grammer, Patrica Heaton and Fred Willard... How Did This One Fail????
