I'm doing a research project on various rural TV shows and I was looking for some input. I have a list of some favorite episodes culled from fan sites and interviews and I need to find the funniest and/or most compelling scenes from these episodes. Also, I may have missed some great episodes in my research, so if you notice a glaring omission, please include the same info. My project and I thank you.

Episodes:
Nobody Loves a Sergeant (#7)
Gomer Untrains a Dog (#35)
The Secret Life of Gomer Pyle (#77)
The Show Must Go On (#99)

I have several favorite episodes, the top two would be when Gomer is supposed to drive the sarge's car back to the base and it gets stolen. He spends the whole show trying to find the car and at the end it gets smashed
by a wrecking ball. The other one is when the Sarge buys Bunny a fox stole
and when she's dancing all the fur comes off.

I like all the eps listed above, plus a couple of others that come to mind (but I don't have the episode numbers or titles).

One episode involves Gomer involved in war games. He's assigned to paint a mobile command post (truck) with camouflage colors (green, beige and black)... he meets some hippies who criticize him for parking the command post on top of a patch of dasies.

Then, after making friends with the hippies (one of them played by Rob Reiner), the hippies offer to help Gomer paint the vehicle. They paint one side, Gomer paints the other side, and then Gomer discovers that the hippies painted their side with psychadelic colors and symbols (peace signs, flowers, etc)... Gomer tells them that if they paint the truck like that, no one will recognize it as a mobile command post... Moondog (the head hippie) replies "Well, that's the idea, ain't it?" LOL

Sgt Carter of course, blow his stack when he sees the truck, but then changes his tune when the colonel sees it and congratulates Carter for his brilliant idea of painting the command post to look like a hippie wagon. Alls well that ends well.

Another episode involves Sgt. Carter taking a vacation and going home to see his mother (somewhere in the midwest). Gomer accidentally gets stuck on the plane and ends up in Carters home town. Gomer keeps peeking into the windows of the house, and Carter thinks he's going crazy because he keeps seeing Gomer everywhere.

Carter's mother finds out that Gomer is stuck in town, so he offers to put him up for the night, allowing Gomer to sleep in the attic. (She explains to Gomer that Vince was always afriad of the attic as a boy, so he's not likely to go up there). Of course, Carter does go up to the attic to look for something, and when he opens the door, he sees Gomer in a nightshirt holdiong a candle for light.

I think the episode ends with Gomer hopping a plane back to California and getting back to the base before Carter himself returns.

Great, great episodes!

I am in shock that I love so many of these B&W episodes of season one!

I always thought I hated them, and couldnt wait until they got to the color episodes... well watching it now again, basically every episode is 5/5 or 4/5

Join the club! I, too, always favored the colored episodes, but I just finished Disc 1 of Season One, and these episodes are incredible!

I thought perhaps they might be better than I remember them, but they're every bit as good, or better, than the episodes which were produced in color.

I'm thinking that the B&W eps might not have been run as much in syndication, so maybe I just didn't remember them as well. But every episode is fantastic.

Maybe there'll be one I don't like, and maybe that's all I remembered about the B&W period....but I haven't come across that ep yet

Great, Great stuff!!

One of my favorite episodes is the one where Carter and Gomer team up in the survival test and come back 5lbs heavier.
Another one that comes to mind is when Pyle witnesses an automobile accident between Carter and some civillian and winds up in court to testify as the only witness to that accident, making both Carter and the other feller look like fools.
A third one I really like and thought was very funny is the one where Pyle does this little dance and ritual that bears a remarkable resemblance to the "moonwalk" to predict the weather.

According to Sitcoms Online's main page, Season 2 of Gomer Pyle is scheduled to be released on June 26. So it won't be long (it'll just SEEM that way!)

If that's the episode I'm thinking about, I believe that the accident involved Carter and some lady... and the lady's husband was played by Al "Grandpa Munster" Lewis.

If I remember that one correctly, Carter was in town with Gomer and was backing out of a parking spot...he barely scratches the lady's car and decides to leave, but Gomer feels guilty and leaves a note (unbeknownst to Carter I think, but I'm not sure) .

Then, Al Lewis shows up at the base demanding that Carter pay for his smashed up vehicle... at the end of the show we find out that Lewis' wife later had a MAJOR accident with the car on that same day (which was her fault) and tried to pin it on Carter. Lewis plays such a cantankerous character that his wife is afraid of him, and panicked when she had the major accident, and in her panic decided to blame the whole thing on Carter.

What's the name of the one where Gomer is out with the Navy on a ship and he jumps off the boat right through the life raft! That is the funniest scene to me of all the Gomer episodes!

I can't find the name of the episode, I'm sure I overlooked it. There are many Gomer Pyle shows that I like. But my favorite is the show where there is this Chinese Restaurant where Gomer takes someone for a celebration.

This place is a front for a gambling operation. They don't care about the business or what they serve. Pyle even brings Sgt Carter in after raving about how good it is.

These people are really ticked off because someone actually enjoys their food and keeps bringing more people back. By the time the police are on to them, they have transformed themselves (because of Pyle and Co.) into a REAL restaurant and totally befuddle the cops, who have been staking them out. They can't believe they are a legit business.

It's been a while since I seen this show, so I'm probably missing a lot of things. I haven't seen any show in a long time. I hope TV land can get them back on someday.
