LOS ANGELES(AP) Don Knotts, the skinny, lovable nerd who kept generations of television audiences laughing as bumbling Deputy Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show," has died. He was 81.

Knotts died Friday night of pulmonary and respiratory complications at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, said Paul Ward, a spokesman for the cable network TV Land, which airs "The Andy Griffith Show," and another Knotts hit, "Three's Company."

Devastating. I can't take this anymore, too many great people dying, yet someone like a terrorist lives. Mr. Knotts, you gave us laughter, warmth, and happiness- while all the time you were just doing your job. You were wonderful. I owe you a lifetime of gratitude, sir. Rest in peace.

Wow...you just never expect someone so cheerful to die.

He will definitely be missed forever. Barney Fife and Ralph Furley live on forever.

just read this off aol...

Griffith, who had visited Knotts in the hospital before his death, said his longtime friend had a brilliant comedic mind and wrote some of the show's best scenes.

"Don was a small man ... but everything else about him was large: his mind, his expressions," Griffith told The Associated Press on Saturday. "Don was special. There's nobody like him.

"I loved him very much," Griffith added. "We had a long and wonderful life together."

awww:) As sad as I've been all night about this I'm glad Andy was there to visit with him.

Don, you have made me laugh so hard over the years. I will always remember what a hilariously funny person were. I will remember you best as Ralph Furley on Three's Company. You did a tremendous job as Barney Fife also. You will be sadly missed by many.
