It's true, hip hop is better than rock music (IMO). Hip hop is more lyrical and samples loops from classic music in jazz, blues, soul, funk, r&b, and rock.

Um...Rock hasnt made a comeback. All you hear on popular radio mostly is hip hop and r&b...so, what are you talking about..? There hasnt even been a non hip hop/rnb #1 that's not from an American Idol, since fricken 2001...

What exactly do you mean by lyrical? I don't want to say that all rap music lacks in any true meaning, because I know that that probably isn't true. But a lot of the mainstream rap music I've heard is extremely shallow lyrically.

Honestly, the rap songs I ever hear are ones about either hooking up with a girl, having sex with a girl, or something with drugs. For god sake's, Nelly's lyrics were about his teeth..

I agree, a lot of the hip hop on the radio and in the clubs is horrendous lyrically, but there's a lot of other hip hop out there, not just underground, but artists like Jay-Z, Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Common, and others who have some of the most intelligent lyrics. Plus I say hip hop is lyrically superior to rock because the style allows for better execution of lyrical poetic devices such as alliteration and rhyme scheme.

And those sampled loops are from songs written by actual musicians who took the time to learn how to play instruments and write songs, which can be a painstaking process.

I'm not impressed by someone who pushes a button on a sampler, cops someone else's groove and then raps over it to a computerized drum machine beat.

When I heard Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You," I rolled my eyes, thinking that was a great song when The Police wrote and performed it 15 years earlier as "Every Breath You Take." If you can't come up with your own song, why bother?

But you know what? That's just my opinion. Hip hop and rap have done very well without my patronage, so I'm sure 25 Cent is doing fine without me as a fan.;)

Amoing the reasons rock isn't doing so well:

1) Most radio stations don't want to bother with promoting rock acts due to a little thing called "demographics." Most rock fans are older, and radio stations reccord companies want to attract young people.

2) Rock became too white and too male. The white male percentage of the U.S. population is dropping like a stone - and young white guys like hip-hop anyway.

3) When record comapnies do sign rock acts, they sign acts your parents could be comfortable listening to. Your parents could be comfortable listening to New Age as well! Rock is supposed to offend your parents.

4) The rock bands that get a lot of attention today are filled with the kind of guys Tom Petty said you once joined a rock and roll band to get away from.

5) While there are several bands that could shake rock out of its complacency, record companies don't want to sign them because they're not "safe." Besides, they'd rather stick with signing hip-hop acts so they can attract that "young" demographic.

6) Russell Simmons is hell-bent on destroying rock so he, his brother, and their friends can sell more hip-hop records.

7) Madonna is hell-bent on destroying rock so she, Brintey Spears, and other assorted floozies can sell more dance records.

8) The only rock radio you hear anymore, at least in hip-hop-happy New York, is on public radio. What sort of loser listens to public radio? Oh, that's right - me!

9) Rock bands are so corporate and conservative, it's hard to tell the difference between one and the other.

10) Colonel Mustard did it in the conservatory with the candlestick.

I understand what you're saying. But you have to understand that there are so many different types of "rock" music, as well as so many different types of "hip hop" music. I listen to a majority of alternative bands, many of who have lyrically inspired me so much. I think that you have to have an overall knowledge of all types of music to be able to make a fair judgement of which is the best.

I feel that hip hop is lyrically superior to rock in it's mechanics, not its message. For this reason I also believe Tupac was the most overrated rapper ever (50 cent is not overrated, just over supported). Listen to Nas' first album(Illmatic) and hear the rhyme schemes he uses. In 2 lines he may have 3 or int 4 different rhymes and it occurs throughout the whole album, which if you can find an equivalent to in rock, please let me know.
