As you may recall, James "Whitey" Bulger was the focus of a 1996 segment of Unsolved Mysteries (he has also been profiled on America's Most Wanted numerous times). He is on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, wanted for racketeering and murder.

Unless I missed my guess, The Brothers Bulger is on sale in book stores today. I mentioned this book in a recent post. It is about Whitey and his brother William Bulger (former president of University of Massachusetts).

The author of the book is Howie Carr, a Boston radio talk show host. He has been following the Bulger case extensively, and has a "Whitey Watch" section at his web site (howiecarr.com).

There is also a "Brothers Bulger" web site, and it has some reviews. Among the reviewers are Alan Dershowitz and author James Ellroy both of whom had appeared on UM. (Ellroy, of course, was interviewed in a segment about his mother's unsolved murder, while Dershowitz was interviewed in a segment about the O.J. Simpson case.) Check it out.

I was in Jersey last week and I stopped in Barnes & Nobles and they had the book on the shelves so its been out since last week at least on the east coast.

Anyhow I skimmed a bit of the book on the chapters devoted to The Winter Hill Gang's slayings of Roger Wheeler Sr. which was profiled on the first UM special in 1987 (even though Whitey and company was never directly named on the segment, UM did finger the trigger man on the Wheeler hit: Johnny Martiano)

It looks interesting from what I read especially if you are interested in "The Jai Alai Murders". It seems that Roger Wheeler's son's persistance was a crucial factor in breaking the case. In fact Whitey is quoted in the book as saying something like "Wheelers son isn't gonna go away" or "Roger Wheeler's family is too wealthy to let this thing go".

I have to get this book. I'm a huge fan of Howie Carr's radio show and his newspaper columns. He's got a fantastic style of writing.

Howie's been talking up the book a lot lately. He's making the TV and radio rounds this week to promote the book. His appearance schedule is on his website.

I'm also from Somerville, so back in the day, I knew the sons of some of the Winter Hill Gang. Pal Joey's anyone? ;)

He was on Rita Cosby's MSNBC show last night. So was Roger Wheeler's son, who believes Whitey was involved in Roger's murder. Wheeler's son wanted Whitey to know that they haven't given up on him.

Although I listen to Michael Savage more than I listen to Howie Carr, Howie is good radio talk show host to listen to when you're driving home from work. He has a good sense of humor.
