Mork & Mindy finished #3 in the season ratings for the 1978-1979 season. The producers and ABC made the decision to tamper with a hit and it backfired. The second season almost destroyed the series. In an attempt to give the show more meaningful stories the second season opened with a strange surrealistic episode in which Mork shrank and fell into a never-never world. Practically the whole supporting cast changed. The series got moved to a different night and then it lost nearly half its audience. Three months after the season premiere ABC and the producers scrambled to fix their mistakes. Mork & Mindy lasted four seasons but the season ratings were never in the top 25 after the first season.

Amen! The people at Mork & Mindy didn't realize that,"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"Not only that, but after the first year Mork's character had been pretty well established and Robin Williams ad-libbed less and less. The initial season was great for him but he felt too hemmed-in afterwards.
