I have just a fragmented memory of a 60s sitcom. When it was time to go into action an older man would spell out the word ACTION! Seems like it was a hero type show. This is driving me crazy!

Are you still there? Anyway, I think the show you are probably looking for is called "Mr. Terrific". In any case, it fits your description pretty well.

Yes, I'd have to concur. It certainly sounds like Mr. Terrific to me. I can't think of any other program in which a regular character spelled out A-C-T-I-O-N when a job needed to be done.
