View Full Version : How about a new TV comedy about Robert Reed's behind the scenes love life?

It would be set in the 70's, of course, and combine the We-must-hide-this-secret theme of "I Dream of Jeannie" and "Bewitched" with the slapstick of "That 70's Show," and today's popular and witty gay humor, a la, "Will and Grace."

It would follow the trials and tribulations of Robert's love life, as he struggled to somehow make it fit in with his fame as America's favorite dad, "Mike Brady."

I can picture Robert cruising, say, a hot young stage hand while on the set after a scene just wrapped up, then later, the two of them retreat to Robert's trailer.

Just when things are heating up, a loud knock is heard at the door.

"Robert!" shouts Sherwood Schwartz, in a "Dr. Bellows-type characterization, "I wanna talk to you!"

Hilarity ensues when the two men rapidly try to pull it together, but fail as their hair is mussed and their clothes are swapped and Sherwood enters, with a skeptical look on his face.

In other episodes, we are treated to scenes of Robert in skimpy swimming trunks at the beach and his well documented attraction to blond surfer dudes, or scenes of him tooling around 70's-era L.A. in a convertible and finding groovy parties to get stoned at.

Occassional drama could be found in Robert's attempts to be a father to his real-life daughter.

Now, the only problem I have is, what to call this 21st Century show I've dreamed up?

Ideas, anyone?

LOL

I knew you'd like it, erin. s-h-i-t, I shoulda been a tv writer.

Oh well. I can dream, can't I?

Ooh, this afternoon, I took a nap and dreamed that they had a "Jetsons Meets the Flintstones" type of movie (remember that one?), made in the early 70's, in which it turns out "Jeannie" is really just "Samantha's" sister.

In the dream, there was actually a sequence where JEANNIE wiggles her nose to do magic.

Later, when I woke up, James told me they could totally digitize the actresses and make just such a movie.

I mean, call me obsessed, but the fact that you and I are even here on a chat forum about a 40 year old tv show, PROVES that there might still be a market of shows like the ones I mine from pop culture, then mix up to make strange new combinations.

God, I wonder how I could learn to write tv scripts???

Anyhoo, take care, hun.

OH, and one last thing...who is that in your avatar?

That pic was Don Drysdale, a former pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was an outstanding pither, helping the Dodgers to four pennants (and two World Championships) in an eight year period. He appeared in a Brady Bunch episode in which Greg was convinced that he didn't have to finish school because he thought he was good enough to be a big-league baseball player.

In 1968, the year before Drysdale retired, he set a new record for consecutive scoreless innings pitched, with 58, a record broken 20 years later by another Dodger, Orel Hershiser (with 59).

Hershiser broke the record under what I would consider some strange circumstances.

(from Wikipedia) "On September 28, 1988, Hershiser surpassed Drysdale when Hershiser finished the season with a record 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched. In his final start of the year, Hershiser needed to pitch 10 shutout innings to set the mark – meaning not only that he would have to prevent the San Diego Padres from scoring, but that his own team would also need to fail to score in order to ensure extra innings. The Dodgers' anemic offense was obliging, however, and Hershiser pitched the first 10 innings of a scoreless tie, with the Padres eventually prevailing 2-1 in 16 innings. Hershiser almost did not pitch in the 10th inning, in deference to Drysdale, but was convinced by the Hall of Famer to take the mound and try to break the record. When Hershiser broke Drysdale's record, Drysdale went to hug the man who just broke his record and told Hershiser "Oh, I'll tell ya, congratulations...And at least you kept it in the family." (end of Wikipedia excerpt)

But, even though it was suspicous that the Dodgers just happened to be shut out themselves that day, at least Orel did hold the Padres scoreless for that 10th and last (for him) inning. Plus, the record still would have been broken if Hershiser pitched a shutout first inning in his first start of the following season.

Drysdale was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984. He is the only Baseball Hall of Famer who is also married to a Hall of Famer. And Mykel, before you get any ideas, I'll explain... Drysdale married the former Ann Meyers. Meyers is in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a college star with UCLA.

(Meyers was the first female, at any university, to receive a full four-year scholarship for playing basketball. She played for UCLA from 1976 to 1979. Her brother David was also a star there in the early 70s, as a teammate of Bill Walton).

Drysdale was not gay.

btw, to return to the subject of this thread, if you think that the Muslim cartoon protests are bad, you ain't seen nothin' until you try to produce a TV show about Robert Reed's private life... there isn't a network out there that would touch that with a ten foot pole. At least, not in the U.S.

I wouldn't totally put it past Hollywood to do a movie on his life though, given the current climate of 'Oscar' nominated flicks...but I think that the Bradys are still far too popular with mainstream America for Hollywood to go there. Besides, Reed's "other" life was something he never wanted anyone to know about. Which means that the people who knew him would not be very cooperative in providing info on his life. They have too much respect for him to do that.

Hollywood did (or is doing) a movie on the life of Bob Crane (I don't know if the movie is or was out yet)...but a TV show about his life? No way... same with Robert Reed....
