the only two people in the hallway? That has to be the Weirdest scene on Good Times. Couldn't he had just said OUT LOUD-"I just saw J.J being taken away in the police station"-lol Very Odd Scene

I agree that it was kind of silly, but in television terms it was to keep the secret that JJ was arrested from the audience.

Not only was that weird, but also the fact that Florida didn't hear the door knock. That woman was ALWAYS GETTING THE DAMN DOOR!!! "I'll get that JJ" "I'll get the door Thelma, you go do your homework" etc. etc.

Maybe he whispered because he didn't wanna interrupt the dancing. Or maybe it was cos the producers knew it was cheaper to pay him as a background extra if he didn't say anything audible than if he'd actually said something that could have been heard by the audience!

I wasn't asking why-"STYMIE BEARD" was whispering in Bernadette Stanis ear, I was asking why MONTY was whispering in Thelma's ear. I was referring to the characters, not the actors.

Maybe he was whispering so no one else around could hear, he might have thought it would have been embarassing to the family if the other neighbors found out. Just a guess, though.

He wouldn't be interrupting the dancing IF HE AND THELMA ARE OUT IN THE HALL...
Stymie (the actor) had done speaking parts on different episodes, so that throws out that reasoning you gave abt being cheaper.

Of course he wouldn't have interrupted the dancing if out in the hall but maybe (as a character) he decided to double his chances of non-interruption by going to the hall and whispering!
Maybe the producers decided to save money by paying him as an unspeaking background extra rather than a speaking role- for that particular episode! These decisions often are made by TV producers even with performers who've already had speaking roles!

Bottom line as was posted before, the reason was so the audience (at home as well as in the studio) would be in suspense. That's it.

But the question was why would he whisper when they were both in the hallway, there was no one else there and the FRONT DOOR WAS SHUT. The scene could have been done differently so the audience would be in suspense and yet that silly scene of him whispering was not done. It could have been shown with Flo and James dancing, then the camera showing Thelma in shock and saying her statement. But in reality it was dumb the way they had him whispering. Only to have THELMA SAY HER STATEMENT OUT LOUD THE WAY SHE DID. So, then, what was the purpose of the whisper. Stupid!

Again, you keep mentioning the producers and we already knew that. I was just asking as a fun episode topic why MONTY not STYMIE whispered in THemla's, NOT Bernadette's ear. Another question would be-"Why would James take his wife on the Interview? I know it was put in the script but the question is for EPISODE DISCUSSION

Right. When he knocked, I don't think he even looked inside to see if James and Florida were around. Oh yeah, "it was in the script", LOL. Let me stop saying that sh**.:D

i get so sick and tired of these "that was in the script" etc. responses. Hmmm, I guess it's easier than having a fun discussion.
