Excuse me if this has been discussed before, but why are the DVD sets for TDVDS so expensive?

I don't have them for that reason. Each one is like $50-$60. I know there are a lot of special features, I think that might be why, but I could be wrong.

There are hours of features; archive photos, commercials, award show clips, commentaries, clips from specials, interviews, etc. Clearly, when they decided to offer this show on disc, they decided to do it right.
Also there are, I believe, a lot of fans. You know, supply & demand. They're charging what fans (most fans) are willing to pay.

That's great that the fans are willing to pay that. I think that the average DVDS fan is in a higher income/education bracket. The fans of most sitcoms are always complaining about the price. They don't want to pay even $30 and $40.

It is worth every penny. I am often disappointed when I order a season set from another show (The Mary Tyler Moore Show, for example) at less cost but with fewer or no extras. I want those extras!

You can get the complete series for about $225 from amazon which works out to $45 a season, still expensive but worth it considering amazon sells individual seasons for $63 which is $315 for all 5 seasons. Wish I hadn't bought the individual seasons as they came out. Just like what happened with Friends. Complete series was cheaper than individual sets. The show Combat is another that comes to mind, $400 individual or $200 for the complete series, glad I waited on Combat and saved $200. If the studios keep this up, a lot of fans will just wait for the complete series and then maybe some shows won't get complete releases because fans wait to buy when all seasons are released and individual season sales will be low.

it is worth the high price, but it's still too expensive for me, which is exactly why I bought the season 1 and 2 sets brand new off e-bay, and I also plan to buy season 3, 4 and 5 on there, too

Back when I got my sets from deepdiscountdvd.com, I thought they were in the $36.00 range, but I just checked now and they are $51.19 per season now and free shipping. They must've upped their prices at that site cuz I know I didn't pay that much for mine.

Ebay is always an option. I haven't checked there for the DVDS, but I'd be surprised if you couldn't find many sets of each season offered.

You can sometimes find these at Costco or Sam's Club for under $40 per set.

The reason they were pricey is that the distributor (Image Entertainment) is one of the smaller players in the market and they frankly didn't expect to sell huge numbers of these sets so they had to charge more to get back their investment. They had to rely mainly on word of mouth and internet mentions to spur interest rather than print or TV advertising. A popular show like the Simpsons is going to sell many copies and thus the studio can lower the per unit price.

To their credit Image gave fans their money's worth with these sets. They also released the Twilight Zone sets. Pricey but tons of extras.

We saw them again on DVDEmpire for $164 last week (all five seasons), and in stock, so we ordered them. Finally.

They arrived today, so we're busy checking the Season 5 disks to make sure they're okay.

...is because Carl Reiner still controls the rights to the series (along with CBS/VIACOM), and he KNEW this would be his show's "lasting monument". So, he got everyone together (AGAIN!!) to reminisce and include "extras" that actually enhance the episodes rather than act as "mere throwaways" that other companies would add to "pad" the package. "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW", on the other hand, is now controlled by 20th Century-Fox Video [their corporate parent, News Corp., owns the entire "MTM" TV library], and Mary Tyler Moore wasn't (or wouldn't be) available to plan "extras" and commentary, so Fox Video released it merely as a "profit maker" while waiting for future profits from "24" and its ilk on DVD.....
