This is part one!

Darryl, Sean, Mario, and Julian were standing on the street corner in Darryl's neighborhood.

"Darryl, I dare you to shoot that old guy with this gun," Sean said to Darryl, handing him a pistol gun. "It's loaded," Sean added. Darryl looked at him warily.

"What kind of "dare" is that? Are you crazy, Sean?" he said in a shocked tone. What kind of friends do I keep? Darryl wondered internally.

"No, I just know how to have a good time." Sean said with a smirk.

Darryl firmly pushed the gun back into Sean's hands. "Take this thing out of my sight", he said in a cold, even voice.

Mario taunted in a baby voice, "What's the matter? Afraid to play with guns?'"

Darryl gave Mario a cold look. "Oh shut up, Mario. Didn't you learn not to play with guns when you were little?"

Julian said, "What a baby. We shoot people all the time now. Of course you wouldn't know that since you went to that poo-poo boarding school, Johnson."

"You guys actually shoot people as a game?" Darryl asked, shocked and disgusted.

"Yeah", Julian, Mario, and Sean said in unison.

"What the f u c k is wrong with you three? Shooting people isn't a game. It's a felony", Darryl said disgusted.

Sean said, "Don't act like you're Mr. Goody Two-Shoes, Darryl", he said in a sarcastic tone. Then in a sugary sweet voice, he said, "Remember the robbed stores and the stolen cars? Remember the robbed houses? The muggings?"

"That was different. I am not like that anymore. And stealing people's belongings is a lot different than shooting them," he argued.

"Oh shut up. We just wanna have fun." Then he sang in the tune of Cyndi Lauper's song, "We just wanna have fun."

"Your kind of fun is not my kind of fun", Darryl said evenly.

Sean stared at him icily and took the gun and aimed it at the old guy, who looked to be in his 60's. "Let's resume the the game, shall we?", he said to Julian and Mario.

"Yes"! Julian said eagerly.

"Do it!" Mario said excitedly.

Sean nodded.

"Nooo!" Darryl screamed inhumanly. He lunged at Sean, trying to stop him from pulling the trigger and shooting the old man. He ended up making Sean drop the gun. Sean and he both dove for it and both got the gun. They both stood up, still holding the gun. Sean snatched the gun out of Darryl's hands. He aimed the gun at the man again. Darryl slapped Sean's hands, trying to get Sean to let go of the gun. When that didn't work, he tried to pry the gun out of Sean's hands.

Sean punched Darryl in the face, with his right hand and held the gun in his left. Then he kicked him in his shins, causing him to fall down. He re-ainmed the gun and shot the old man. Darryl atched helplessly from the ground as the man keeled over.

"That was fun, wasn't it," Sean said to the other two friends.

"It's how we do it," Julian said with a big smile. Mario nodded.

Darryl got up and Sean stood right in front of him. He put the pistol under Darryl's jaw. "If you tell anyone what you saw, I'll shoot you", he said in a deathly cold, quiet voice. "Remember, my baby's still loaded", he said with a cold smile.

"I won't", Darryl said, trembling with fear, but trying to hide it. He internally gulped. What kind of maniac friends do I have? I just saw him shoot a guy in cold blood. My other friends agree with him because they do this all the time! Darryl felt sick to his stomach.

"And remember D, your fingerprints are on this gun, so if you snitch, it will be your word against all three of us, and it won't look good that your prints are on this gun, now will it?" Sean said with a wicked gleam and a smile.

Darryl shook his head and said in a cold voice, "Take that gun away from my jaw."

Sean said, "You've changed, D. You used to be hardcore. Now you're just..... a wimp." He put the gun down. "It's always so heartbreaking to see someone waste so much talent". He shook his head and looked at Darryl with sad disappointment.

Part 2

Darryl looked at Sean with flashing eyes, and then went to check on the old man. He checked the old guy's pulse, then his breathing, then his heartbeat. There was nothing! No! It couldn't have happened! The guy couldn't be gone! Darryl realized that the guy's blood was gushing out in what seemed like gallons. Darryl's stomach churned. Bile began to rise in Darryl's body. He struggled to keep it down. He could still call paramedics. He called "911" on his cellphone to see if an ambulance could come revive the old guy. A dispatcher answered.

"Hello?" There's a guy on the corner of 140th street and 1st avenue, 31053." The dispatcher asked, "Did you check him?" Darryl answered, "Yes. I don't hear any breathing, feel a pulse, or hear his heartbeat," he said, trying to sound calm.

"Okay, I'll send an ambulance there right away," the dispatcher said.

"Thanks", he said, and hung up.

Sean said, "You're an idiot." He smirked.

Darryl ignored him. A few minutes later, the ambulance showed up with two police cars. The paramdedics checked the guy. The paramedics had grim serious faces. the had the look of tragedy on their faces. One paramedic said, "Sorry, but this guy is gone." The other paramedics nodded sadly. "He lost way too much blood. There is no heartbeat, no pulse, no nothing. We tried to revive him, but to no avail."

One policeman looked at him suspicioulsy. "What were you doing when you found him dead?"

No!This couldn't be happening. Was he now a suspect?
"I.I,".... Darryl began to stammer. He couldn't tell the truth, not after remembering Sean's cold voice as he threatened to shoot him, just like he did the old man. He shuddered.

"I was just walking around the neighborhood when I saw him on the ground", Darryl lied. He looked around. Where were his "friends"? They'd deserted him. Figures. Murderers always leave the scene of a crime, he thought, bitterly smiling.

"What's your name son?" Another policeman asked him, flipping open a notebook.

"Darryl Johnson", he said, feeling his heart go dry. The policeman wrote his name in the notebook. Darryl's heart beat fast as he realized that the guy had written his name under a list called "Suspects". He took off running. Behind him, he heard the policemen order the paramedics to put the body in a a bodybag. One policeman yelled to him, "Hey, wait a minute Darryl. We just want to know why you were here with a dead body that has a bullet lodged in him!" Darryl was scared. He didn't deserve to be on a suspects list!

Darryl ran as fast as he could, dashing in alleys, down roads, and jumping over people's fences. He ran through yards. He looked behind himself, and realized that the police were chasing him in their cars. His heart palpitated, and his body was drenched in sweat.

He kept running , and the roar of the police sirens was deafening. He ran to a main street and ran on the sidewalk. He ran like a track star runner. Him being chased by police was causing a commotion and drivers, passengers, and passerby stopped to gawk. Darryl almost fainted from exhaustedness. Darryl's body began to get very weary, and he began to slow down. What's the worst thing that can happen if I were caught? His weary mind wandered. Then an inner voice yelled, 'Sean! Sean will kill you if you rat him out! Remember that old man? That could be you next!

Darryl snapped up and began running full speed again. He ran behind a store and saw a big dumpster. He lift it up, and the rank smell almost gagged him, but he had to climb in so that he could hide from the police. He climbed in, and landed in a pile of mushy, pulpy, old newspapers, eggs, bananas, and who-knows-what else. The smell was truly repulsive.

He wanted to regurgitate from what was all over him and the putrid smell was attacking his nostrils. He had to will his stomach not to respond to his surroundings. He mused over him being treated like a criminal. He wasn't a criminal, but his life was very much in danger. His friends were MURDERERS, and especially one of them would kill him if he ratted him out.

He hoped the police wouldn't find him. He wauted for a little while. then, what seemed like 10 minutes later, he decided to get out. He lifted the dumpster lid and furtively looked around to see if he was still being chased.

He wasn't, so he got out completely. He began to walk back to his house. He took in big gulps of sweet, fresh air, though he still reeked. He walked down the roads. A couple with two kids stared at him curiously. The little girl was holding her nose. "Man, he STANKS!", she said loudly. Her brother complained, "Oh my gosh, he smells like garbage!", covering his nose. The mother and father looked at him as if he were an alien and wrinkled their noses.

I don't blame them. After being in a dumpster, I don't smell too good. He thought.

He went back home and looked around to see if there were police staking out his house. None were. He got in the front door and went into the bathroom and gratefully turned on the faucet, and warm water came out. The warm watser soothed him a little as he showered. He washed his hands, his hair, and his body. He felt a little better. he rinses, then dried off. He went to his room and put on his nightclothes.

He went to the family room. His mother was there. "Hi mom,", he said smiling a forced smile. Even his forced smile didn't reach his eyes. "What happened?", she asked him, worried.

"Nothing", he replied. His forced smile went away and he looked a little down.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm okay, mom", he replied, his stomach churning again.

"Honey, you can tell me anything." She said soothingly.

"There's nothing to tell you", he said in a slightly robotic voice.

"Oh." She looked at him oddly and concerned. She turned on the TV. She said, "We can watch Good Times. It's one of your favorite TV shows."

"Okay mom", he said in a slightly unenthused voice.

Good Times played, and his mom laughed at a funny scene where JJ threatened Michael's life with thelma's cooking. She noticed Darryl didn't laugh. She looked at him, with a worried look. He wasn't even looking at the screen. His face was turned sideways, away from the TV, his eyes were downcast, and he looked troubled.

"What happened?" She asked again. "And don't tell me 'it's nothing', because I know it's something."

He took a deep breath. "Mom, a friend of mine at Johnson told me that he saw one of his friends shoot a guy and murder him in cold blood. Then his friend turned the gun on him and said that he'd shoot him if he told anyone what he saw." He shuddered again, thinking about what Sean did to him.

'What's this friend's name?" She asked him gently.

"Mike." He said, saying the first name that came to his mind that wasn't Sean, Mario, or Julian.

"Well, Mike should get himself involved in some type of witness protection program. He should tell police what he saw happen to that guy."

"No! If he does that, he will be killed by his friend!" He said panicked.

"Why do you care so much about Mike? Did he get you involved in this?" She asked him suspiciously.

"No!" He said defensively. "Mike didn't get me involved!"

"So why is he telling you his problems?" She asked him pointedly.

"He just wanted someone to talk to. He wanted to unload his problems on me."

"Well maybe Mike should just avoid this friend."

"His friend knows where he lives," he said fearfully. "He can come "get" him anytime he wants." Darryl gulped.

"Mike should get the police to help him out. Or he can try moving from his house to a relatives house or something like that. But don't worry about it. Mike will be fine, if you tell him what I suggested."

No I won't Darryl said internally.

"Maybe you should eat something." Darryl didn't want to eat, but his stomach growled loudly. "I'm not hungry," he said.

His stomach continued to growl. "Your stomach seems to think otherwise," she said knowingly.

"Okay, I am hungry, but I have no appetite," he confessed.

"Just eat a little something," she begged him.

"Okay, I'll eat something." She gave him a few crackers. He reluctantly took the crackers and had to force them down, not wanting to eat after what Sean did and he himself hiding in a messy dumpster.

His stomach was finally satisfied. He looked at the TV. His mother had put on the news, then left the family room. Darryl gasped as the news station showed a picture of the dead old man. Nooo! He screamed internally as they put up all his facts. He was Marco Smith, a 66 year old grandfather of 12 children, and a good man who believed in the good of everybody. They showed his crying, mourning family. Darryl gulped as they said the number one suspect's name. Darryl Johnson. A voice over news anchor said, "Johnson reportedly called 911 to get an ambulance, and fled the scene when it was implied that he was a suspect. He led police on a chase until they couldn't find him. Here is a sketch of Darryl Johnson."

They showed a sketch picture of Darryl. The news anchor said, "Darryl Johnson seems to be around 17, seems to be a light-skinned African American of medium build and about 5'10 and about 180 pounds. His eyes are cocoa brown and his hair is black, and has a short afro. He was seen wearing light gray jeans, a white shirt, and a gray hoodie sweat jacket. He's the number one suspect in the death of Marco Smith. If you have any information on Darryl Johnson, call 1-800-FOR-TIPS.

I didn't do anything! He thought angrily.

His mother opened her bedroom door and came out. "I'm going out. Do you want to come with me?"

He said, "No!", explosively. He couldn't go out. People would notice him right away.

"Okay...... Bye Darryl." She said, looking at him weirdly.

She left. Five minutes later, the phone rang.

Darryl nervously picked up the phone. "Hello?", he said nervously.

"Seems like you're the Number One Suspect." Sean said evilly, then laughed. "They're gonna come get you!"

"Sean, you're the coldest man I know right now. You know I didn't kill that old guy," he said, his voice fillled with rage. "Now I could end up in PRISON because of you. You're ruining my life!" he screamed furiously.

"I could have told you that. That's why I said to you that you're an idiot. I KNEW that there was a possibility that they'd think YOU were the suspect!"

"Thanks to you, I'm being treated like a fugitive," Darryl said, his voice cracking with sad emotion.

"No, correction, you ARE a fugitive. If they find you, you're going to the slammer for a long time. Don't pick up the soap," he said laughing evilly.

"Oh stuff it." Darryl said, tears running down his face. His life was over. He probably never should have come home from Johnson. Now, his dream of going to college was marred. If he went to prison, his education would be put off for a LONG time. Just when he was finally getting his life straight. He was finally starting his life anew.

"Darryl, Mario, Julian, and I will come visit you in prison." Sean said in a softer voice. "We won't abandon you."

You mean like you abandoned me when the paramedics and police came?, he fumed inside.

"Where did you go when the police and paramedics came?" He asked hurt and angry.

"We left because we were scared", Sean said in a scared voice.

"Oh, so you left me holding the bag?" Darryl said, his voice quavering with rage.

"Look, D, no one told you to call "911", "Sean said with an edge in his voice.

Is he angry with me? Darryl thought lividly and shocked.

"Look, Sean, no one told you to shoot that old guy," Darryl retorted, seeing red.

"No one but Mario and Julian," Sean said. "I told you, we do it for fun all the time. You HAD to jump in and try to save that old guy." He chuckled. "You're pretty weak. I was able to snatch that gun from you so easily, D. It was pretty noble of you to lunge at me while I had a fully loaded gun in my hands." He chuckled again. “What were you thinking lunging at me like that? I could have easily shot you."

"Like you did to that old guy?" Darryl retorted.

"Look, D, you wouldn't be a suspect if you'd just let sleeping dogs lie. You should have just left him there. We shoot a lot of people. We don't get caught because no one sees us shooting this people. You're too good now Darryl. You used to be so hardcore. The old Darryl would have joined us in the game."

"You know, you've changed too, Sean. We never used to play shooting games where we shoot people," Darryl said softly.

"That's because after you left to Johnson, we decided to spice up our lives. So we decided to start that shooting game. If they die, that's just a casualty."

"Bye, Sean," he said his voice filled with icy coldness and hurt.

"Bye, jailbird," Sean said.

He hung up the phone.

His mother came home 15 minutes later. "Mom, I have something else to tell you about Mike," he said nervously.

"More Mike?" She said, rolling her eyes and sighing. "Okay."

"Mom, Mike is now the number one suspect," he said, clasping his hands and looking at her nervously.

"Why is he a suspect?"

"Well, he ran when the police showed up and implied that he was a suspect,"he said, looking at her with a chagrined look, and then looked down.

"Oooh," she moaned softly. "He did NOT run away," she said softly, shaking her head slightly.

"Yes he did."

"Well, no wonder he's the number one suspect," she said. She looked at him curiously. "Are you sure you aren't Mike? You can tell me anything, you know."

"No, I am not!" he said defensively.

"Okay, Darryl. Did they arrest Mike yet?"

"I don't think so."

"Oh. Well I'm going to my room again. Just tell Mike to be careful."

"Okay mom. Thanks for listening."

A few minutes later, he heard a knock on the door. Actually, it was more of a loud banging.

"Open up, this is the police. We've gotan arrest warrant on you, Darryl Johnson. You're surrounded. Open the door peacefully or we will break the door down and come get you!"

Darryl gulped and knew he had to surrender peacefully. He opened the door and two policemen stood there solemnly. The car's sirens provided blue and red lights. The policemen flashed badges and the arrest warrant in front of his face.

One policeman put Darryl's hands behind his back and cuffed him. His mother came out of her room. "Darryl, you told me you weren't Mike!," she said, with tears in her eyes. The tears soon flowed down her cheeks.

"I'm sorry, mom". He choked out sadly. The sight of his mother crying really stabbed him in the heart. He didn't want her to see him like this, in handcuffs, being led out of the house by cops. He wanted to disappear from the face of the earth. He hung his head low.

"Bye mom,” he said sadly.

"Bye Darryl, she said, sobbing heart-wrenching sobs. "I'll get my lawyer and see if he can see you out of this mess."

"Thanks," he said smiling a little sadly. The cops ushered him completely out of the house. They escorted him to the police car, put him in, and buckled him up.

They began to ride. Darryl was really uncomfortable and the cuffs were digging into his skin. He wanted to yelp in pain, but he decided not to. He looked at the cops through the separator. He couldn't believe this was happening to him.

At a police station and they promise to give him and his mother protection if he confesses
that Sean killed the old man. It should end with a big confrontation between the police and
Sean, Julian and Mario.

They continued to ride. Darryl looked sadly out of the police car, at the other cars on the road. He was miserable.

The police car turned into a police station. The car was soon parked, and the policemen unbuckled Darryl, helped him out of the car, and escorted him to the police station. They put Darryl into a seat, and got out fingerprinting ready.

They dragged him to the fingerprinting station, removed the cuffs and put his fingers into the ink and onto the paper. Look at me being fingerprinted, just like a criminal. He thought. Then he rubbed his sore wrists. Then they took him to get his mugshot.

He did a serious, solemn expression and they took his picture. Now I have a mugshot, he thought, smiling bitterly.

Other cops looked at Darryl in amazement. “Hey, that’s Darryl Johnson!” One exclaimed loudly. “You two caught Darryl Johnson! Good job! You caught the number one suspect so quickly!"

I always wanted to be a star, Darryl thought, but not like this.

“Thanks,” the two cops said.

They took Darryl into a separate room for questioning. The heavier policeman, Officer Patterson asked, ‘What were you doing with Marco’s Smith’s dead body?”

“I was just walking around the neighborhood when I saw the guy on the ground and called 911 to see if they could get paramedics to come revive him,” he lied again.

The skinnier officer, Officer Michaels said, “Then why’d you run from police?”

Darryl stared at them, with tight lips and a cold stare. He didn’t want to tell them about Sean.

Patterson said, “You must be involved in the murder then.”

“No! I even tried to stop the shooting of Marco!” Darryl screamed without thinking, and then covered his mouth as he realized he virtually said that he knew who killed Marco.

Michael said, “I thought you found him on the ground.”

“Um, I. I.," Darryl stammered.

“Yeah,” Patterson said. “Hadn’t he already been shot when you found him?”

Darryl said, “I didn’t mean to say that,” he said unconvincingly.

“So, you were involved in the shooting,"Patterson said.

Darryl gave them the tight-lipped cold stare again. “No, I wasn’t involved in the shooting,” he said in a cool tone, after about two minutes.

“Do you know who shot Smith?” Michaels asked.

Darryl began to fidget with his hands again nervously. He looked at the cops nervously. He took a deep breath. “I do not know who shot Marco.” He said.

The officers escorted Darryl to a holding cell. They put him in and locked the door. The cell was small and had two beds that looked more like benches.

Darryl paced around the cell. He sat on the “bench” bed and stared blankly into space, thinking.

About an hour later, Patterson said, “Michaels has gone home.” Here is your one phone call,” he said, unlocking the cell door and putting him in handcuffs. Again, Darryl didn’t resist. Patterson led him to the payphone , took the handcuffs off, and gave him 35 cents. Darryl thought of who to call. Sean or his mom? He decided to call Sean. He called Sean and when he answered, Darryl said, “I’ve been arrested. I am in a police station." In a very soft voice so that Patterson wouldn’t hear him, he said, “Get your ass over here.” Sean had caller ID so he didn’t have to tell him which police station it was. Sean said, “I’ll come. I did promise to visit you, D. I’ll tell Mario and Julian to come too.” “Thanks,” Darryl said, and hung up.

“May I have another 35 cents?” He asked Patterson sheepishly.

“Sure you can, Darryl. You surrendered peacefully, and didn’t resist us when we came to arrest you, so I think that deserves another 35 cents. He smiled and gave him the money. It pays to come peacefully." “Thanks”. Darryl said, and put the money in the pay phone and called his mom. She answered the phone. “Mom, I’m sorry I didn’t tell you the truth about what happened to me,” he said honestly. Did you get the lawyer?”

“Sorry honey, he’s sleeping right now,” she said sorrowfully. She burst into fresh tears. “My only son, my only child is in jail,” she sobbed.

“Mom, I’m not in jail. I’m in a police station. But, I am in a cell. A holding cell.”

“Honey, I know you didn’t do it. I know you are innocent in all of this. But tell me, who did it? Which friend was it?”

“I can’t tell you, mom,” he said, almost choking on his words.

“Okay, if you want to keep secrets from me, go ahead,” she said, trying to guilt trip him.

“Okay”. He said. Then he whispered, “Sean,” low so that Patterson wouldn’t hear him.

“It was Sean?” she repeated, sounding angry and shocked.

“Yes”.

“Oh, I’ll get him. He got my baby arrested,” she said, sounding vindictive.

“No, mom, no. Don’t do anything. Please,” he begged.

“Okay. I won’t.” She said, sounding disappointed.

“I love you mom,” he said, choking on the words.

“I love you too,” she said. “Bye.”

“Bye mom.” He hung up the phone.

Patterson put him back in handcuffs and led him back to the cell.

He sat on the “bench” bed again.

“You have three visitors.” Patterson said a few minutes later. “Okay”. Darryl said. Sean, Mario, and Julian came in. “Hi Darryl,” Sean said in a sweet voice.

“Hi,” Mario said looking at him sheepishly. Julian said, “Hey.” He looked at the floor.

Darryl stared at them coldly and didn’t say a word.

Sean said, “Now, you officially have an arrest record. You’re spending time behind bars,” he said with a snicker.

Julian said, “I’d NEVER get you into this,” he said to Darryl. “Me neither. I’d never let you take the rap.” Mario said.

Sean gave them glares and told them to shut up. Mario and Julian both seemed to wither a little bit..

Darryl looked at Mario, Julian, and Sean through new eyes. Were they afraid of Sean?
Sean said, “Let’s go.” “Bye Darryl," Julian and Mario said. “See ya later, D” Sean said. They trailed behind Sean and left.

Darryl thought, They always act like flunkies to Sean. Maybe he intimidates them. He even felt a little sorry for Mario and Julian. He thought back to the way that Mario and Julian always seemed to try their best to agree with Sean. It’s like Sean has some kind of control over them, he thought shuddering.

He knew what he had to do. Darryl told Patterson, “I know who killed Marco Smith,” he said taking a deep breath. “Yes?” Patterson prodded.

“It was Sean Masters.” He said, breathing hard.

“Who’s that?” Patterson asked.

“You know the skinny dark chocolate colored guy with the low-top fade that was just here? That was him.”

“You mean he was here and you didn’t say anything?” Patterson asked. “Why?”

“I saw Sean point the gun at Marco, and I tried to stop him by lunging at him and trying to take the gun from him, but he snatched it back from me. When I tried to get it back, he punched me in the face and kicked me in my shin, causing me to fall down. He shot the guy who keeled over as I watched helplessly from the ground. When I got up, Sean put the gun under my jaw and told me that he’d shoot me if I told anyone what I saw.”

“I called 911 to ask them for an ambulance to see if Marco could be revived, after I checked him and found nothing. When the ambulance came, the paramedics checked Marco and tried to revive him, but it was too late, because he was gone. Sean had left me. The police put my name under the “Suspects” list and asked me why I was with a dead body. So I ran and led police on a chase. I even hid in a dumpster. Then I went home when I realized no more cops were chasing me.”

“Oh,” Patterson said. “What are the names of the other two friends that showed up with Sean?”

“Julian and Mario.” He said. “But they really had nothing to do with Marco’s death. Sean is the one who took the gun and shot Mario.”

“Hmm, from what you told me, you should be a witness, not a suspect,” Patterson mused.

“Why would I call 911 if I should be a suspect?” Darryl pointed out.

“You’re right. I think you should be free to go,” he said to Darryl. He took out the cell and opened the cell door. "There is one thing I need to do to you though.”

“What’s that?”

“Check to see if you have any weapons on you or drugs.”

“I am in my nightclothes. I am wearing a silk pajama top and Flannel cotton pajama bottoms. I don’t even have my shoes on,” Darryl said, smiling wryly.

“I know, but I should do it anyways.” Darryl sighed and let Patterson scan his body with a handheld metal detector. Then he let Patterson frisk him.

“You’re clean, Darryl,” he said smiling at him. “I’ll escort you home.”

“Okay.” Darryl said. Patterson escorted him back to the police car and they both buckled themselves in and Patterson drove him back home.

“One more thing,” Patterson said. Sean Masters is now the prime suspect, based on what you told me. He still thinks you’re in the police station, but here is the police station number.” He wrote the number on a piece of paper and gave it to Darryl. “Call me if you find out away to get Sean arrested.”

Darryl said, “Thanks, bye,” and knocked on the door.

His mother opened the door. “Mom, I’m home!” He said happily. She kissed his face. “You’re back!” She waved goodbye to Patterson, he waved back, and then left. “So, tell me what happened,” she said, closing the door.

He recapped almost everything to her that happened to him. He even told her about Sean’s obvious control over Julian and Mario.

“Mom, I think that Julian and Mario are scared of Sean. They tag behind him like lost puppies. They agree with whatever he says. I just realized this when they came to visit me.”

“Sean visited you?” She asked him, raising an eyebrow. “I would have choked him right there.”

“Yeah, he did. But, it seems like Sean has some kind of power over them.”

“I don’t know, honey. I’d do whatever a MURDERER told me to do, too.” She said.

“Yeah. When I used to hang out with Sean and CO, we used to NEVER shoot people. We played fun games like playing basketball and video games.

“I remember that," she said with a nostalgic smile. But people change all the time. Honey, do you want to go to sleep?” she asked suddenly.

“Yeah, I am tired.”

“One more thing. How’d you get free from the police station?”

“I sang like a canary and told what Sean did. The cop let me go home.”

“Oh. Aren’t you worried that Sean will shoot you?”

“Sean doesn’t know that I am not at the police station anymore. And I can’t keep letting Sean do this,” he said with grim determination. “I knew what I had to do and I did it.” He went to his room and went to bed, thinking about Sean before he went to sleep.

When he woke up the next morning, he showered, brushed his teeth, and got dressed. His mom was cooking him his favorite breakfast: eggs, pancake, bacon, sausage, and toast. She smiled at him when he came into the kitchen. “Hi, sweetie,” she said, giving him a hug and a kiss.

“Hi, mom.” He said. He got himself a glass of orange juice. “How are you feeling about Sean?” she asked. He sat down at the table, drinking some juice.

“Don’t even say that name around me,” he said, looking frustrated.

“Oh, I see. Breakfast is ready.” He got himself some breakfast. He ate it heartily.

“Your appetite is back,” she said teasingly.

Part six

“I feel much better today,” he stated, with a mouthful of food.

She got herself some food too and sat next to him. She looked at him tenderly. “It’s so great to have you back,” she said, putting her hand on his hand and stroking it.

He swallowed and smiled a big beaming smile.

She ate her food and they soon both finished their breakfasts.

“I’ll wash the dishes,” he offered.

“Okay, thanks.” She said.

He got up and began washing the dishes. The cordless phone rang and she picked it up.

“Hi, Sean,” she said in an even voice. “No, Darryl still isn’t home. He’s still at the police station.” She tried her best to sound extremely sad. “What’s that? You still want to come over? Okay.” She hung up the phone.

“That was Sean?” Darryl asked, puzzled.

“Yeah, that was him. He wants to come over, though I told him you were at the police station,” she said, shaking her head. “Maybe he’s up to something.”

“You may be right, mom.” He agreed. “Stop washing the dishes, go to your room and hide in the closet.” She told him.

“Okay, mom.” He said. She took a steak knife and clutched the handle angrily.

“Mom, don’t do anything to Sean,” he begged.

“Okay, I won’t”. Darryl went back to his room and hid in the closet.

Two minutes later, he heard the doorbell ring. He heard his mom open the door and greet Sean.

She said, “I don’t know how long Darryl will be at the station, ” She said in a fake sad voice.

“I just wanted to talk to you about him.”

“Oh?” she prompted.

“I wanted to tell you that Darryl is being framed for a crime he didn’t commit. But he’ll be away for a long time.”

“Yes, he may,” she said in a cool voice.

All of a sudden, Darryl heard running footsteps. He heard the door close and lock.

“What are you doing in Darryl’s room? And why did you lock the door? She demanded.

Yes, why is he in my room? Darryl wondered.

“I just wanted to lie down on his comfortable bed”. He said.

He lied down on the bed for about two minutes and then got up. Darryl heard drawers open and close. He peeked out from the closet door and saw Sean open and closing several drawers, pawing through his stuff. “I’ve got to find something good of his in these drawers,” Sean mumbled to himself.

He saw Sean open the drawer where he kept his money. $300.00. “Bingo! Eureka!” I have found something good I can keep from him!” Sean said, eying all of the cash. “Good thing he isn’t here,” Sean exclaimed happily. He began to stuff some money into his pockets. He stuffed a $50, 2 $20’s and 1 $10. Sean’s stealing my money! He thought shocked.

Darryl came out of the closet. “You know, if you wanted some money, all you had to do was ask,” he said in a soft voice.

“Noooooo! What are you doing here? You’re not supposed to be here! You’re supposed to be at the police station!” he exclaimed, looking nervous and looking at Darryl with a wide-eyed deer caught in headlights look.

“They let me go last night. They couldn’t find any evidence that I was a suspect.” He said, telling half the truth and gazing at Sean with a calm face. “And this is MY house."

Sean giggled nervously. “I just wanted to borrow a few dollars from you," he said his voice shaky.

“You didn’t know I was here. How could you borrow money from me when you thought I was incarcerated?” He pointed out softly, looking at Sean intensely.

“I.I”. Sean stammered, sweating. “I just wanted to borrow $20.00 from you.”

“What you just took from me was a WHOLE LOT more than $20.00,” he said in a sweet sing song voice.

“I didn’t mean to do it,” Sean said nervously. He began to squirm.

“You didn’t mean to steal my $100.00?” He repeated, in an incredulous voice. How could you have “not meant” to steal my money?” he asked. Sean continued to squirm.

“I didn’t know you were here,” he said honestly.

“Just give me my money back, and I’ll forget this ever happened,” Darryl said, putting his hand out.

Sean sheepishly got the money out of his pockets and gave him the money back.

Darryl took out 2 $20’s and gave it to him. “Just take it.” He said.

“You mean, you’re giving me money?” Sean asked, in amazement.

“Yes,” he said in an even voice. “You obviously are so desperate for money that you had to go into my room to steal it. You’re good at stealing aren’t you?” He said in a thoughtful voice. "You stole Marco’s life, you stole my credibility when you caused me to be a suspect and landed me in police custody for a crime I didn’t commit, and you stole my money. You would win the Blue Ribbon if stealing were a competition. You would win the Gold medal if stealing were an Olympic event. Now go before I call the cops on you for attempted robbery."

Sean looked sheepish and put the $40.00 in his pocket. He slinked out and barely mumbled bye to Darryl’s mom.

Part seven

He touched the front door. “Sean, I have one more thing to say to you before you go.” Darryl said.

“What’s that?” Sean mumbled, looking down at the floor.

“Come back into my room. I have a lot more to talk to you about.”

Sean reluctantly came into Darryl’s room. Darryl closed the door sao that they could talk in private.

“What is up with Mario and Julian acting like your scared little flunkies? What is up with them acting like your “Yes” men? What kind of control do you have over them?” He asked, boring into Sean’s eyes.

“I don’t have any control over them,” he said in a wooden voice. "They choose to act whatever way they want," Sean said looking at him woodenly. Darryl didn’t believe him for one second, but asked, “What is up with this shooting game?”

“We started the shooting game after you left to go to Johnson.” He said.

“You’ve already told me that,” he said in a soft but cool voice.

“The shooting game is a fun game. We shoot people all the time.”

“You’ve told me that too. Darryl said curtly. “Who really started this game?” He asked.

“I did," Sean confessed, lowering his head. "Then I got Mario and Julian involved."

“Did they WANT to play?” he asked suspiciously.

“Yes,” Sean said in a high-pitched voice, obviously lying.

“Okay, let me make this clear,” Darryl said sharply. “What did they do after you shot the first person?”

“They told me I was sick and crazy”, he admitted.

“And then, what did you do?”

“I said that I’d shoot them if they told anyone what they saw me do. They never even played the game. They just watch me shoot a whole bunch of people and they never shoot anyone.”

"So, when you say that "we" shoot people all the time you mean that "you" actually shoot people while Julian and Mario watch." Darryl said, getting "it".

"Yes, you got it," Sean said, looking down at Darryl's bedspread, looking a little embarrassed.

“So when Julian and Mario were trying to get me to shoot that guy”……. Darryl began.

“They would never have let you shoot that guy. They would have snatched that gun out of your hands in a heartbeat,” Sean said, interrupting and looking resigned.

“Anything else that you are holding over their heads?” Darryl asked.

“No,” Sean said, lying again.

“Sean, tell me. Now.” Darryl prompted.

“Yes, but the rest is none of your business,” Sean said curtly.

“Go home, Sean,” Darryl said, looking at him disappointedly. Sean left.

The fact that Darryl's last name is Johnson and that he goes to a boarding school named Johnson are purely coincidental.;)

When Darryl took 2 20's out and gave them to Sean, the 2 20's are the ones that Sean had stolen. If you remember, Darryl told Sean to give him back the 100.00. When Sean gave him the 100.00 back, he had the 100.00 in his hand and gave(subtracted from 100.00) Sean the 2 20's. It's not an extra 2 20's that Darryl had in his pockets are something like that. So Darryl is left with 60.00 from the 100.00.

The reason that Darryl's mom couldn't stop Sean from stealing Darryl's money is because Sean had locked himself in Darryl's room and she doesn't have a key for Darryl's room.

EVERYBODY asks why Darryl gave Sean 40.00 after Sean had stolen money from him. You guys will have to read between the lines to see why Darryl gave him money........;)

Darryl went out of his room and went to his mom, who was in the kitchen. He sat down at the kitchen table and sighed exasperatedly. “What am I going to do with Sean?” he asked feeling frustrated and tired. “He stole $100.00 from me! Or at least he tried to. I saw him stuff $ 100.00 of mine into his pockets! Then I came out of the closet and confronted him. He told me he didn’t mean to steal my $100.00!” Darryl shook his head. “How can ANYONE “not mean” to steal” $100.00? Unless they are possessed or under some sort of mind control. And Sean, to the best of my knowledge is neither."

“So what did you do?” She asked him, intrigued. “I told him to give me my money back, and that I’d forget about him stealing my money. He gave it back to me.”

“What happened next?” She prompted.

“I gave him 2 20’s from the money and told him to take it.”

“Why would you give him $40.00?" She asked flabbergasted.

“I gave it to him because I could see he really needed the money and I still want him as my friend, and I am there for him. I care for him a lot. No matter what he did to me,” Darryl said sincerely.

“But Sean doesn’t seem to be a good friend to you. He got you an arrest warrant and got you put in police custody for something you didn’t do."

Darryl paused for a while, looking thoughtful. Then he looked at his mom with chagrined eyes again.

“What happened this time?” She asked him warily.

“I am remembering how I used to be. Remembering my past. The mistakes I made.”

“You mean when you stole 4 cars and took them for joyrides, robbed 3 houses, mugged 10 people, and robbed 7 convenience stores?” She asked him knowingly.

“Yeah,” Darryl said shyly. You gave me two “B” choices when you found out all that I did. Boot Camp or Boarding School at Johnson. I choice Boarding School, and you didn’t have to pay because I was doing well enough in school to get a scholarship." He smiled.

“But all of that’s behind you. You haven’t done any of that in over a year. You’ve changed for the better.”

“You’re right, mom,” he said, giving her a happy, proud smile. “Hey, maybe I should talk to Mario and Julian.”

“Maybe.” She said. “I have to go to work,” She gave him a kiss, grabbed her keys, and they said bye to each other.

She got into her car and drove off. Darryl stared at the cordless phone. Who should he call first? Mario or Julian? Mario, he decided. He called him. Mario answered.

“Hey, Mario, I have something to ask you.”

“Hi Darryl, you’re back!” He said happily. Then in a wary tone, he said, “Are you mad at Julian and me? For leaving you in trouble when the ambulance and police came? Julian and I wanted to stay with you, but Sean didn’t want us to stay with you. He said you’d gotten yourself into this mess and that you had to stand alone.” Mario gasped. “I wasn’t supposed to say that! Forget what I just said,” Mario said, sounding fearful.

“That’s exactly what I wanted to talk to you about.” Darryl said. “Are you afraid of Sean?”

Mario hesitated for a long while. “Yes,” he said in a reluctant tone.

“Why?” Darryl asked, concerned.

“I did something REALLY bad, and Sean is holding that over my head. He’s blackmailing me. And not only that, Sean isn’t normal,” Mario said fearfully. “He’s snapped.”

“What do you mean “he isn’t normal?”

“Maybe we should do three- way with Julian, so we can explain further," Mario suggested.

Darryl agreed and called Julian and put him on three-way.

“Hey Julian,” Darryl said when Julian answered. “I’ve got Mario on three-way with us.” Mario and Julian said hi to each other. Julian said, ‘Hi Darryl. I’m glad you’re back," happily.

“So am I.” Darryl said. “But Julian, I have to ask you something. Are you afraid of Sean?” Julian said, “Yes, I am. And so is Mario.” Julian said to Mario, “Isn’t Sean just scary?” Mario said, “Yes, he is.”

Darryl said, “Mario said that he wasn’t normal. He said that Sean had snapped.”

“Do you think that shooting people for fun is “normal”? Mario stated.

“Hell, no,” Darryl replied.

Julian said, “All of a sudden, he started shooting people for fun. And forcing us to watch him. He forces us to be quiet about what he does all the time. He’s killed at least 5 people. And we can’t say anything, or he will shoot us next. Thank goodness you were there to see him kill Marco Smith. Now you see what we go through with Sean constantly. Thank goodness you got the paramedics and police involved. Too bad that you had to take the fall for what Sean did,” Julian said apologetically.

Mario said, “Remember when all four of us used to play fun games?” Mario asked.

Julian said, “I do.”

Darryl said, “Me too.”

“Well, the day after you left to go to Johnson, Sean snapped and took his father’s gun and started shooting people with it,” Mario said, shuddering.

Julian said, “Yes. RIGHT after you left to go to Johnson”, he said with emphasis.

“Hey, why are you blaming me for this shooting game of Sean’s? Darryl asked indignant. “I didn’t ask for Sean to start this game.”

“We aren’t.” Julian said.

“Oh.” Darryl said. “Is he blackmailing you with something, Julian?” Darryl asked, concerned.

“Yes. I did something regrettable a while ago,” Julian said, sounding self-conscious.

“What did you do?” Darryl asked.

“I. I,”…. Julian stammered.

“Maybe you two should come over to my house and we can tell Darryl everything, face-to-0face-to-face,” Mario suggested.

“Okay,” Julian agreed. ‘I’ll be right there.”

Darryl said, “Me too. I’ll just tell my mom first.”

“Okay”, Mario and Julian agreed in unison.

Darryl spoke to his mom and said that he’d be at Mario’s house. She said, “Okay.”

Darryl put on his shoes, got his keys, went out of the door and locked it. Then he walked to Mario’s house.

Julian was already there. Mario and he were sitting on the family room couch.

They all said hi (again) and Mario looked at Darryl sheepishly.

“Okay, here is what I did that Sean is blackmailing me with…….. I stole my dad’s Buick and took it for a joyride. I hit a parked police car with it. After doing that, I drove away in a panic. I ended up hitting two more cars on the road. I sped at 80 MPH in a 40 MPH zone. I ran 5 red lights and 4 Stop signs. The car was banged up pretty badly, but miraculously was still working properly. I parked the car four blocks away from our house. When my dad woke up the next morning, he thought the car had been stolen. I “agreed’ with him, knowing what had really happened.”

Mario continued. “He borrowed my mom’s car to look for it after reporting it as stolen. He found it banged up and had to have it towed, which cost a lot of money, and then he had to pay to get it repaired. He had to tell the police that he found the car. I felt horrible and still do. I felt even worse when I found out that Sean had taken a picture of me driving the car and I didn’t even know he saw me driving the car. He threatens me constantly with that picture and he threatens to tell my dad everything and show the picture to him. He has the picture hidden somewhere."

Darryl whistled softly. “That’s a BIG thing to blackmail you with.” He shook his head sympathetically.

"I did something equally bad. It could ruin my life if Sean told...... I don't even want to tell you what I did because it's so bad."

“Do you see why Julian and I act like Sean’s flunkies? His “yes” men? Act like his little slaves? If we don’t, he will ruin our lives even worse than he already has.” Mario said.

“What did you do, Julian?"Darryl asked softly. "You can tell me."

“Well, I drove drunk after a party and crashed my car. If the cops find out I was driving drunk, I’d get a DUI and end up in prison for a long time. Guess who was at the party and saw me get drunk?”

“Sean?” Darryl guessed knowingly.

“You got it. He did not know I drove away drunk though. But he did see me driving later on…. He threatened to tell what I had done……” Julian said, troubled.

Darryl said, “Come on, we outnumber Sean. We can ban together and go against him. We can be like the Charmed Hallowell Sisters…… We can be like Piper, Phoebe, and Paige. Sean is the Source that we need to vanquish.”

“Brothers” ,Mario corrected him. “We can be like the Charmed Brothers, if there were to be Brothers.”

“You watch too much TV, Darryl, "Julian said, teasingly.

“And besides, we don’t have the magical powers that the three P’s have," Mario pointed out.

“We may not have powers, but there is something we can do. We can kidnap Sean," Darryl said with an evil, wicked gleam in his eyes.

“Kidnap Sean?” Mario and Julian repeated in unison, in shocked tones.

“Yes. We can hit him over the head and put him in a dark basement, all alone, or so he will think"…….

“What is going on in your evil little mind?" Julian asked , looking at Darryl with new eyes. "You do still have a little of the old Darryl”…….

“I’m just tired of Sean pushing you guys around like this. I totally believe you guys when you say he blackmails you. And he tried to push me around too by bringing up my past yesterday…….Maybe he will like a little of his past blown up in his face….. or should I say PRESENT?” Darryl said with an evil chuckle.

“So what’s the plan?” Julian asked eagerly.

“I’ll tell you later, just meet me at my house in 20 minutes and bring flashlights.”

“Okay.” they both agreed.

Darryl went home and got his mini tape recorder and voice changer. He got out his blank tape, put it in the mini tape recorder, pressed record, and put the voice changer in front of his mouth. He said in a weird voice, “Sean Masters, you must pay for stealing my life. You killed me and took me away from my family….. OOH…. I am here to GET you for stealing my life. I will take yours for revenge. HAHAHA” Darryl said in a booming voice. Darryl stopped talking, hit STOP on the recorder, pressed rewind, and pressed play. The voice changer REALLY made it seem like a tortured soul…….Even Darryl felt a little chill. It was PERFECT!

Julian and Mario came over. "So, tell us the plan". Mario said.

"Okay", Darryl said. He let them listen to the message.

“What the hell was that?” Julian said, jumping back. His eyes bulged in fear……

“That was me.” Darryl said, smiling a devilish smile.

“No, I know what you sound like, and that wasn’t you,"Julian said, sounding scared.

Mario said uneasily, “I feel like I’m being haunted.”

“Guys, the voice said, 'Sean Masters', not 'Julian' or 'Mario'. All I did was talk into a voice changer.”

“That was really good,” Mario said, laughing forced laughter.

“Yeah", Julian said, chuckling nervously.

"The plan is to break into Sean’s house and kidnap him. But we need disguises." He went to the attic and got out three old bed sheets. "Wear these over yourselves.”

Mario and Julian took the old sheets and looked at him warily. “Are you sure?” Julian asked him.

“Yes.” All three of them put the sheets on.

“Now, let’s go. I’ve already got the credit card," Darryl said, smiling wickedly.

They all walked to Sean’s house. They looked in Sean’s bedroom. He was asleep.

Darryl said, “I’ve done this three times before, so what’s a fourth try?” He put the credit card in the front door lock and jimmied the lock. He opened the door. They all went into Sean’s bedroom and dragged him out of bed to the floor. Sean groggily opened his eyes, “What’s going on?" He asked. Darryl punched Sean's temple really hard. Sean softly grunted, and then his body fell down, and then lied there, still. They all put Sean into a gigantic bag and left holes for air. They all struggled to bring Sean to the old abandoned house. They opened the door which had been unlocked for 20 years and used their flashlights to see around the house. They took Sean out of the bag. They found the basement and found a chair and some rope on the basement floor. Darryl said, “Help me tie him to the chair.” They all took some rope, put Sean on the chair and tied him well.

Darryl took the voice changer and tape recorder out. "Both of you moan in ghostly voices that you are tortured souls of Sean’s dead victims."

He put the voice changer to Julian, and Darryl pressed record, Julian said, “I want my life back. I was too young to die! I was only 23 with a full life ahead of me and a bright future. Now, you killed me and ended all of my dreams. My soul is trapped." Julian stopped. Darryl pressed stop.

Darryl did the same thing to Mario. Mario said, “I am Marco Smith, the old grandfather you killed yesterday. I had 12 grandchildren who loved me, and you took me away from them by killing me. Now, my soul wonders around, trapped.”

All together, they said, “And now you must DIE, Sean Masters!”

Darryl pressed rewind, and played the tape. “Ooh, that is a pretty spooky thing"………..Julian said shivering.

“And you KNOW it’s us,” Darryl said uncomfortably.

“Yeah, it is pretty spooky," Mario agreed. "Downright SCARY". Mario said, shuddering. "Maybe Sean will faint from pure horror!" His brown eyes twinkled. He rubbed his short cropped black hair and rubbed his dark cocoa cheeks. He rubbed his slightly stocky build.

Julian patted his high-top fade. He rubbed his “red” chin and smiled at Darryl, with a twinkle in his medium brown eyes. He rubbed his muscular stomach.

Darryl told them, “Let’s hide behind these old paintings.” They hid behind towering paintings of Michelangelo imitations and Pablo Picasso paintings. Sean began to come to.

“Where am I?" He moaned softly. Darryl pressed play on the recordings, and the voices played. Darryl had put the volume up really loud.

The voices moaned about Sean stealing their life and Sean sweated, and his eyes bulged out…..

“No, who are you people?” Sean asked, squirming around in the chair, finding himself tied. “How did I get here? I don’t believe in ghosts,” Sean said sounding unconvincing.

Then the final voice played.

“AND NOW YOU MUST DIE!” the voices boomed together.

“NOOOOOOOOOO"! Sean let out a scared, tortured scream/moan. He tried to move fast, but he couldn’t, because he was tied.

Darryl, Julian, and Mario came out. Darryl had the voice changer under his clothes and talked to it under the sheet. Sean couldn’t see to well because of the darkness of the basement.

“Sean Masters, you killed innocent people with your shooting game"……. He said in a spooky voice.

Sean looked terrified…….. “I’m sorry" he said. "Just let me go.” He said in a little tinny voice. He began to tremble violently.

“NOOOO!” Darryl cried in a booming voice. “Why should we? You stole our lives. Now it’s time for you to know what it feels like to have no life!”

“I’m sorry.” Sean said, still shaking violently.

“Sorry won’t cut it. No more killing innocent people. It’s time for you to DIE!” Darryl boomed.

“ NOOOOOOOOOOO!” Sean wailed in a scared voice. All three of them got closer to Sean and they began to rock the chair Sean was on. Sean got so scared, he started to cry loudly. Then he tried to rock himself out of harm’s way. He ended up getting up with the chair and tried to run. He ended up falling sideways away from Darryl, Mario, and Julian. He ended up knocking himself unconscious. Darryl hit him again on the head with an old arm chair. They untied Sean and put him in the bag and dragged him back home and put him back on his bed.

Darryl said, “We should leave right now and each go to our separate houses. Thank you for everything." He smiled at them.

Julian and Mario both agreed , welcomed him, and all three of them went to their separate houses.

At home, Darryl watched went to his room and lay down on his bed and listened to his Chris Brown CD. He listened to Run It and Excuse Me Miss. After listening to these two songs, he turned off his CD player and lied down, thinking about Sean and the plan. It worked out perfectly….. He began to fall into a light sleep when the phone rang. He got up to answer it. When he answered it, it was Sean.

“D!” Sean shouted. “I had the strangest dream today.” He sounded out of breath and a little panicked.

“What happened in it?” Darryl asked with a smirk. He knew what happened.

“I dreamt I was kidnapped by ghosts of people I killed. They wanted to kill me because I killed them. The dream seemed so…….Lucid” he said after a thoughtful pause. “It seemed like it was REALLY happening to me.” Sean said, his voice trembling. "The dream felt too real, too vibrant. “

Darryl said, “Don’t worry. After all, it WAS just a dream, wasn’t it? Dreams have a strange way of telling us how we really feel…… Maybe you feel guilty about what you did to those people. Maybe it’s your guilt attacking your subconscious. It won’t let you go until you confess to killing those people. Maybe you should turn yourself in to the cops.”

“The cops?” Sean repeated, sounding like a lost child.

“Yes. Maybe you should tell the cops what you did,” Darryl said softly.

“But I’ll end up in prison for a long time!” Sean said, sounding indecisive. "You know I’ll get HARD Time with that 10-20- LIFE rule. You know the rule that goes pull a gun, get 10 years in prison, fire the gun, get 20 years in prison, and shoot someone, get 25-to LIFE.”

“Yes, I know that rule. But I’m sure that you will get a lighter sentence if you turn yourself in.”

Sean sighed. “Can I just come over to your house? I REALLY need to talk to you face-to face.”

“Okay Sean”, Darryl said a little slowly. What did Sean want now?

Sean said, “I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

Darryl said, “Sure.”

In a few minutes, Sean came over and knocked on Darryl’s door. He answered the door. Sean looked at him with a pained expression on his face. “Hi, D,” he said in a troubled voice.

“Hi, Sean,” Darryl said cautiously. What was going on with Sean?

Sean went into the kitchen. Darryl followed him. Sean put his hand in his pocket and moved it around for a little while. “The game is over, D,” he said in a troubled voice. “No more shooting games.” He took his hand out and his hand was now holding the infamous gun. “Tell Julian and Mario I said bye and that they’d be better off without me. So would you. The world would be better of without me. I don’t deserve to live in this world. All those people I killed and injured with the game. The way I landed YOU in trouble with the cops when you were just trying to be a Good Samaritan. You really do have a good heart, D." He gave him a sad smile.

He continued. "The way I blackmailed Julian and Mario. They never even wanted to be involved in this shooting game. By the way, I blackmailed them with car troubles they both had. Mario stole his dad’s car and crashed it and ran red lights. And Julian drove his car drunk. Bye, D." He looked at Darryl with a tortured expression. “It’s time for me to just……go.”

Sean put the gun it in his mouth.

“Sean, what are you doing?” Darryl asked shocked. He lunged at Sean, and snatched the gun out of Sean’s mouth. He punched Sean in his temple again and Sean fell unconscious. As Sean lied unconscious, Darryl said, “Don’t worry. We’ll get you the help you need.” He called Memorial Hospital Psych Ward and when a receptionist answered, he told her, “I am going to refer my friend Sean Masters to the Psych Ward. He’s deeply troubled and tried to end his life. Can I make arrangements to take him there?” The receptionist told him he could and he did.

He dragged Sean’s unconscious body to his (Darryl’s) car, put the keys in the ignition, strapped both of them in, and began to ride to Memorial Hospital. At a red light, he looked at Sean with sad, concerned eyes. Sean had to have been deeply troubled if he tried to blow his head off. Darryl started to cry for Sean. The light changed, he wiped his eyes, and continued driving. He pulled into the hospital and had to drag Sean into the hospital entrance and down the corridors. People stared curiously at them. Darryl said, “This is why you should never mix alcohol with drugs,"he said, pointing at Sean. "He experimented with them mixed together.” He didn’t want to tell them the truth. The people nodded and Darryl, dragging Sean went into the Psych Ward waiting room. There were at least five people already there. “What’s with him?” a heavyset man asked, pointing at Sean.

Since they were already at the Psych Ward, Darryl decided to tell him the truth about what happened with Sean. “He tried to blow himself up,” Darryl said in a whisper like voice. “He’s depressed.”

“I’m here myself because my daughter tried to end her life by jumping off of a roof. She’s troubled too”, he said, shaking his head.

‘Oh.” Darryl said emphatically.

The dream felt too real, too vibrant.

You know I’ll get HARD Time with that 10-20- LIFE rule. You know the rule that goes pull a gun, get 10 years in prison, fire the gun, get 20 years in prison, and shoot someone, get 25-to LIFE.”

“Wait a minute, aren’t you Darryl Johnson?” a woman in her 30’s asked. "The main suspect in Marco Smith’s death?” Everyone looked at Darryl curiously.

“Yes, but they let me go because they could find no evidence that I was a suspect.” Darryl said, feeling flustered.

“Yeah, they do catch the wrong people a lot of the time.” She said sympathetically. The others murmured in agreement.

Sean began to come to again. “Where am I?” he asked.

“You’re going to get help,” Darryl told him soothingly.

“I’m in the hospital?” He asked, confused.

“Yes.” The doctors will take good care of you.”

In 10 minutes, an employee came out. “Those of you with new people to this Psych Ward, come now.”

Sean looked at him with hurt eyes. “Psych Ward?” he repeated in a betrayed voice.

“Yes.Now get up.” He helped Sean up. They followed the employee into the Psych Ward corridors. They went into a room.

A doctor was sitting in the room. "So, tell me what the problem is?”

Darryl looked at Sean and said, "He tried to end his life by blowing his head off."

"And why did you do this?" the doctor asked Sean, looking at him thoroughly.

"No one needs me in this world. I've destroyed WAY too many lives." Sean said sadly.

"Care to expand?" The doctor asked curiously.

"I am just a pest to this world. No one needs me. I'm a burden." Sean said, looking pained.

"Do your parents know you're like this?" The doctor asked.

"No," Sean said, exhaling loudly.

"How old are you?" he asked Sean.

"17."

"That means you're a minor...... The doctor said slowly and thoughtfully. He looked at Darryl. "And how old are you?" Darryl said, "17", with a sinking feeling in his heart.

"What's your relation to each other?"

"I'm his friend," Darryl said, his heart sinking lower.

"I am sorry, but we need a parent or a legal guardian 18 or over to consent, since you are both minors." The doctor said.

"So, you mean, you can't let him stay in the ward?" Darryl asked his mouth dry.

"I CAN put him in the Youth section of the ward, but he has to consent."

Darryl looked at Sean, mentally willing him to consent.

Sean took a long while to answer. Come on Sean, consent, he thought to Sean.

Sean took a deep breath and said, "I consent."

"Great. I just need to talk to your parents or legal guardian." the doctor said.

Darryl took out his cell phone and called Sean's house. Sean's mother picked up.

"Sean is at the Psych Ward at Memorial Hospital. You need to come over right away," he said.

Sean's mother shrieked, "The Psych Ward? What is he doing there?"

"He REALLY needs serious help and they need a parent to come over."

"Okay, I'll be there soon."

He hung up the phone.

"Your mom is going to come soon," Darryl said, smiling at Sean weakly.

Sean looked a little apprehensive. "My mom will KILL me when she finds out what I've done," he said, sounding nervous.

"Don't worry." Darryl and Sean waited in silence for Sean's mom to come. She came a little later.

"Sean, baby, what happened?" She asked him tearfully. "Why are you here?" She gave Sean a BIG hug.

"Mom, Darryl just saved my life."

"He saved your life?" She looked at Darryl.

"He did." Sean said. "I..... He paused and gave his mom an uncertain look. "I tried to kill myself earlier and he saved me."

The doctor cut in. "Hello. We need your permission to let him stay in here, because he seems to be emotionally disturbed and suicidal."

She looked at the doctor. "Of course you have my permission," she said, looking at Sean tearfully.

The doctor said, "Let's have a chat and explore Sean's feelings."

They both agreed.

The doctor asked Sean, "What led you to want to kill yourself?"

Sean looked at him and his mom with uncertain eyes again. Then he looked at Darryl with an uncertain look.

Darryl said, "Go on. Tell them the truth."

Sean took a deep breath. "I started a shooting game and got my two other friends involved. I killed at least 5 people with my game. My or should I say OUR two other friends never even wanted to play this game. I forced them to watch by telling them I'd shoot them if they snitched. I also blackmailed them with troubles they had that they didn't want anyone else to know. I killed Marco Smith and got him blamed for it. He pointed to Darryl. I even stole $100.00 from him, and he was nice enough to let me keep 40.00 of it. I'm a horrible person. I later had a terrible dream that ghosts wanted to kill me for killing them. I wanted to just end my life because I felt so bad about what I'd done.” Sean said, looking relieved that his secret was out in the open.

"What led you to play this shooting game and kill people?" The doctor asked curiously.

Sean took a deep breath. "I started the game after my friend Darryl left us to go to a boarding school named Johnson. He was always so fun to be around, and when he left, he took about all of the fun with him. So I decided to start shooting people. It was fun to me. Now, I realize that shooting people is NOT fun," Sean said self-loathing and ashamed.

"Who's Darryl?" the doctor asked him.

"He is," he said, pointing at Darryl.

His mom said, "Sean, I can't believe you'd do this." She burst into fresh tears.

The doctor said, "We can keep him here and you can visit him every day. From 8am-to 8PM."

"How much money wills it cost to keep him here?" she asked, sadly.

"It depends on your insurance. You do have insurance, don't you?" he asked, looking at her closely.

"Yes." She said. I have Medicaid."

"We can keep him here for a month for $1500."

She agreed. "Bye Sean," she said tearfully. "And thank you, Darryl." She signed some consent papers the doctor had his assistant bring her. She looked at Sean one more time and gave him another big hug. "I love you Sean, no matter what you did." "I love you too, Mom," he said tearfully.

"You're welcome, Mrs. Masters." Darryl said. "May I speak with Sean in private?" he asked both of them.

"Sure," they both said. They left.

Darryl looked at Sean with compassion. "So, this is your new life for a month." he said, trying to keep his voice light.

Sean looked at him a little ashamed. "Darryl, I'm sorry for stealing your money and putting you through all this stress," he said in a low soft voice.

"Don't worry about it," Darryl said, giving him another weak smile.

"Thanks for helping me," Sean said softly.

"Hey, that's what friends are for, isn't it?" Darryl said, still smiling weakly.

"When I get out of this mental hospital, you wanna play 'regular games', like we used to with Julian and Mario?"

"I'd like that," Darryl said with a full big grin.

Darryl said, "Come here. Give me a hug,he said, bringing Sean close to him and wrapping him in hug. Sean hugged back and gave Darryl a big smile.

"Bye", Darryl said. "I'll visit you. I won't abandon you." He said with a sneaky smile.

"Sean said, "Hey that sounds familiar,"with a wink and a smile.

"I know it does." Darryl said with a smile. "It’s something my friend told me when I was about to go behind bars."

Sean said bye, and Darryl left.

Darryl drove back home.

Darryl opened his front door. He saw his mother standing my the kitchen/dining room table. She was looking at him sternly, but concerned.

Oh no, I came home after her! he thought, mentally kicking himself. I have NEVER stayed at Mario's THAT long, he mentally chided himself.

"You wanna tell me about anything?" she asked him in a promting tone.

"About what?" he answered/asked.

She gestured at the gun on the table. He looked at the gun. "I thought you had changed, Darryl," she said in a disappointed and sad tone.

"Oh that. That was Sean's gun. He tried to kill himself with the gun and I snatched it away from him."

"Oh," she said, her face changing and her tone changing to a relieved tone. "What happened after that?"

"I took him to a Psych Ward, and left him there".

"I KNEW that boy had problems," she said, shaking her head. "It's a good thing you were there to save him, though I don't know if I would have saved him personally. You're an angel, Darryl," she said, giving him another kiss.

"So I've been told," Darryl said with a sly grin.

He called Mario and told him what happened with Sean.

Mario said, "Well, that gives a new meaning to the term, "Sean's snapped" Mario said a little ironically.

"I think you, I and Julian should go visit him," Darryl said.

Darryl, you told him you'd visit him." Mario started slowly.

"Yeah, what's wrong with that?" Darryl said, wondering.

"Sean will be in the mental hospital for a month," Mario continued.

"Yeah?"Darryl said, not getting where Mario was going.

"You have to go back to Johnson in 2 weeks," Mario concluded.

"Oh!" he exclaimed, finally remembering. How could he have forgotten that? "Why did I tell him I'd visit him?" Darryl said, half to Mario and half to himself.

"Well, you still have two weeks to visit him, "Mario said, sounding optomistic.

"Yeah! Why don't all of us visit him tomorrow?" Darryl suggested.

"Yeah. I'll tell Julian. Bye Darryl," Mario said,.

"Bye." He hung up the phone.

He went to his room and logged on to his computer. He went on amazon.com and looked up the Ying Yang Twins new album. He wondered if he should buy it off of Amazon, but wondered if he should just ask Julian or Mario to burn it for him. As much as he loved the Ying Yang Twins, he really didn't know if he should buy it over the internet. he looked at the reviews for their album, USA. He decided that he'drather have it burned, after looking at the price of it on Amazon.

He decided to give it one more try and he went to EBAY.com He realized that even the cheapest price would be over 5.00 with shipping and handling, and he'd need to join the EBAY club and the CD could get lost in the mail. He decided it wasn't worth it.

He logged off. He turned on the TV and the channel was showing the news. He heard, "Darryl Johnson is no longer the suspect in Marco Smith's death. After Johnson went into police custody, he told the cops that Sean Masters killed Marco Smith. So now, the new number one suspect is Sean Masters. Here is a sketch of him. They showed a sketch of Sean and described him. If you have any tips on maters, call 1-800 FOR-TIPS."

They showed live footage of Officer Patterson. Officer Patterson said to a news reporter , "He, Sean, was right there in the police station and I didn't even know he was involved in the crime. He had come with two of Darryl's other friends to visit him in the station. It was after Darryl's three friends had left that Darryl said that Masters killed Marco,m and described which one of his three friends that it was. When I asked Darryl why he didn't say anything, he confessed that Masters had pulled the gun on him and threatened his life if he snitched. I remembered what Masters looked like clearly, so I had a sketcher sketch his face," Patterson concluded.

The news reporter asked , "There were two other friends?"

Patterson said, "Yes, but Darryl said that they really had nothing to do with the crime. Masters most lilkely threatened their lives too if they snitched."

The news reporter said, "And that's all for now. He said, "And now back to you, Chrissy", and the camera cut to Chrissy, another news reproter, who began to talk about the next news, a cross fire between two rival gangs that left 2 people dead and 10 others in critical condition. After that, Darryl turned off the TV.

Sean is now in a mental hospital, he thought smiling an ironic smile. I don't know how they're gonna come get him, Darryl mused.

He called the Psych Ward, and asked the receptionist if he could speak to Sean. She said that she would check if he was in a stable condition, and told him to hold on. He waited for five minutes, and then she came back. “Yes, you may speak to Sean Masters,” she said, and put him through.

“Hi, Sean, how’s it going, buddy?” He asked in a soft, pleasant tone.

“Fine, but the food is NASTY!” The food they gave us for dinner looked and tasted like GRUEL. It was like oatmeal mixed with water. Eew.” Sean sounded like he was shuddering.

“I’m glad you seem to be okay, Sean,“Darryl said, happily.

“Yeah. I have one important question to ask you," Sean said, sounding hurt.

“What’s that?” Darryl asked/answered, wondering why Sean sounding like that.

“Why did you lie to me?” Sean sounded betrayed.

“What do you mean?” Darryl asked, confused.

“Why did you tell me that you would visit me when you knew that you would go back to Johnson in two weeks, and knowing I would be here for four weeks?”

Darryl took a shower and ate meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and drank orange soda.

“Why did you leave me? Why did you go to that Johnson school and just leave me here?" Sean looked betrayed.

“I had to. I had to go to that Johnson school. It was either that, or boot camp.”

“Do you know how lonely I’ve been without you?” Sean asked.

“What do you mean? You have Julian and Mario.”

“Yeah, but they’re no fun. Remember all the fun all of us used to have together?”

“Yeah.” Darryl said, remembering.

Sean stared at Darryl with large, sad eyes. “I’ve missed you, D.”

“Darryl said, “I’ve missed you too.”

Sean walked over to Darryl and gave him “Dap”. He gave Darryl a big smile and walked away. He stopped and then he said. “Thanks for everything and I’m sorry for what I put you through.”

Darryl woke up. He sat upright in his bed. He thought about his dream. He saw the sadness in Sean's eyes and the sadness in his voice when Sean asked why Darryl had left him. He thought back to the hurt tone in Sean's voice when they spoke over the phone. He looked at the clock. 3 AM at night. He listened to his Chris Brown CD again and then went to sleep.

Darryl was walking down the beach when he saw someone drowning. It looked like Sean! Sean frantically waved at Darryl to come rescue him. Help me! Help me" Sean screamed, and then went down a few times. Darryl rushed into the sea and swam to Sean. "Hold on to me, Sean". Sean gratefully held on to Darryl's back and Darryl swam both of them to safety.

"Thank goodness you were there to save me, D, no matter what I've done to you." he said shivering.

"Are you okay, Sean?" Darryl asked. Sean nodded. "Why would you do that Sean?" You know that you are not a good swimmer. You could have drowned. "

"I'm sorry for doing that," Sean said, barely looking at Darryl's eyes.

"Just tell me why you did it."

"I don't know. I just wanted to try to see if I could try to swim well."

Darryl said, "I'll get you dried." He took his towel and wrappped it around Sean. Sean wiped himself.

Sean looked at him with large, expressive eyes. "Thank you again for saving my life. You've always been a good friend."

Darryl said, "You're welcome. I've saved your life more than once, you know." He gave Sean a knowing look.

"Yeah, when I tried to kill myself," he said, looking down and away from Darryl.

"You scared the scrap out of me when you put that gun in your mouth," Darryl confessed. "I had to snatch the gun out of your mouth so that you wouldn't pull the trigger."

Sean said, "I'm sorry for punching you in the face and kicking you."

"You brought that up, not me. I never even mentioned that you did that to me. I forgot, just like I forgot when you stole my money," he said, looking at Sean with narrowed, thoughtful, but not angry eyes. "You brought that up too."

"Did you REALLY forget?" Sean asked, looking at him with doubtful eyes.

"No, but I wasn't going to bring it up again. You know Sean, you're a handful."

Sean said, "Why are you still my friend?" in an uncertain tone.

Darryl looked at him for a long while before finally answering.. "You're my buddy for life," Darryl said, giving Sean a playful punch in the arm.

Sean gave Darryl a tight hug. "Thank you for being there for me."

Darryl woke up again.

‘Why do I keep having dreams about Sean? He wondered perplexed. Then he thought back to what he himself had said to Sean. “Dreams have a funny way of telling us how we really feel.” Maybe that’s why he kept dreaming about Sean! It was because he really cared about Sean!

He looked at the clock. 7 AM. In one hour, he would be able to go visit Sean at the Psych Ward. He watched a Saved By The Bell rerun where Kelly’s face had turned Maroon from the “Zit Be Gone” cream that Zack had given her, because she smeared it all over her face. When that episode was over, he quickly got ready to see Sean.

He popped a Cheeseburger Hot Pocket in the microwave and wrapped it into a napkin. He was about to leave when the phone rang. His mother had already left to see his aunt, so she couldn’t pick up the phone. He answered the phone. It was Julian.

“Hey Julian," he said.

Julian said, “I’m going to go see Sean. You want to come with me? Mario is already on his way there. I can pick you up if you want.”

“No, I’ll just take my car,” Darryl said.

“Okay, bye,” Julian said.

Darryl took his keys and the hot pocket and went outside to his car. He started the car, buckled up, and began to drive to the hospital. At red lights, he ate his Hot Pocket. He thought about Sean some more.

He got to the Jackson Hospital. Then he walked to the Psych Ward. Mario was already there, and then Julian came about two minutes after Darryl. It was 8:30.

They went in to visit Sean.

Sean looked at them embarrassedly and said hi sheepishly. They said, “Hi” too. Sean looked at Mario and said, “The picture I took of you is between my mattresses. You can take that picture and cut it with scissors. I won’t be threatening you with that picture anymore. I’m sorry for blackmailing you. I won’t tell your dad about you and his car."

He looked at Julian. “You can forget about me telling anyone that you drove your car drunk that night. I’m sorry for blackmailing you too.”

To Darryl he said, “I’m sorry for bringing up your bad past.”

Julian said, “I heard you tried to kill yourself. Mario told me,” Julian said sympathetically.

“Yeah I did. I just wanted to end my life yesterday. I felt so bad about that I did to all three of you guys. But Superman over here decided that I should live," he said, pointing at Darryl, with a sly smile.

Mario said, “You promise? No more shooting games?”

“I promise,” Sean said, putting his hand over his heart.

“Thank goodness,” Mario said with a relived smile.

Julian said, “That game is so played out," he said in a teasing voice.

Sean smiled.

Darryl had been quiet, musing about Sean.

Sean looked at Darryl. “D, what’s up?”

“Nothing,” he said to Sean.

Mario said,” I’ve got to get to work.”

Julian said, “Me too.”

“Bye” Julian and Mario said to Sean and Darryl. They said it back. Julian and Mario left.

Sean looked at Darryl. “If I were drowning, would you save me?” he asked Darryl.

“Of course I would”, Darryl said, feeling a sense of dejavu.

“I had a dream that I was drowning and I asked you to come save me and you did. What a strange dream.”

“You know what’s even stranger?” Darryl asked.

“What?” Sean asked.

‘I had the same dream too.”

“Why would you have a dream about me drowning?” Sean asked.

“Think about the dream really hard, Sean. Remember what I told you before? Dreams have a funny way of telling us how we really feel.' ”

“Oh yeah, I remember when you told me that. Right after I had this strange dream that three ghosts wanted to kill me for killing them. Three ghosts.” He stopped and stared at Darryl hard.

“I killed at least 5 people. Why did only three ghosts come to haunt me”? He still stared at Darryl hard. ”That dream felt real because it WAS real, wasn’t it, D? Those three ghosts were you, Julian, and Mario!”

Darryl lowered his head, and said, “Yes. But you deserved it. You killed at least five people and you were blackmailing J and M into this game. How’d you figure it out?”

"I figured it out because I just remembered that you hit me in my temple right after you snatched the gun out of my mouth and caused me to be unconscious. The same thing that one of the “ghosts” did to me."

“Are you mad at us?” Darryl asked.

“No. You three should be mad at me for what I did to you,” Sean said truthfully.

“Let’s get back to the dream. You were drowning, and you needed me to come help you. That could mean that you secretly need me."

Thinking about his first dream, he said, “How did you feel when I left to go to Johnson?”

Sean looked at Darryl sadly. ‘I felt like I’d lost by best friend. Oops, I had. I felt horrible when you just left me," Sean said, looking heart-broken. "You went to a school in Jacksonville! We live in Miami, D!” He said emotionally. “I remember telling you something like this in a dream, D,” he said, sounding thoughtful. “Without the “city” parts.”

“Yeah, me too,” Darryl said softly.

Sean said, “I remember apologizing for what I’d done to you in both dreams. In real life, D, I’m sorry for everything bad I’ve done to you. And you are a really good friend.”

“It’s kind of spooky that we had the same dreams, Sean,” Darryl said thoughtfully.

“Yeah, it kind of is,” Sean agreed, nodding his head. “Do you really think I’m a handful?”

“Hell yeah,” Darryl said smiling slightly. “But the weirdest part of the dream was that in the dream, we were talking to each other like we really were face to face, like we are now. We were talking as if we were talking to each other in real life. That was kind of bizarre.”

Sean said, “Yeah. I’ve never shared a dream with Julian or Mario before”, he said smiling cheekily.

“So everything we said to each other in the dreams rings true, right?” Darryl asked Sean.

“Yes.” Sean agreed.

Darryl said, “I’m going to leave now.”

He and Sean gave each other “Dap”. Sean and he smiled a “secret” smile, both knowing each other was thinking about the “Dap” they gave each other in the first dream.

Darryl and he said bye to each other, and Darryl said, ‘I’ll call you later.”

Sean said, “Okay, but no 'dream" calls, or no using "GHOST" phones either. Use an actual phone," he said with a wink and a smile.

"Okay." Darryl said. He left.

Darryl went home. He watched Sabrina The Teenage Witch. He watched the episode where she had to put Libby into a puzzle. Then he watched a Fresh Prince Of Bel Air episode where Ashley and her friends tried to joyride the car to their Girl Scouts meeting because Will, Hilary, nor Carlton wanted to drive them there. Joyride. He smiled a little ironically as he thought about the times he had taken cars for joyrides. He thought about Mario joyriding with his dad's car. After the show was done, Darryl drove to the library and checked out some books. He checked out Gone With The Wind and Of Mice And Men. He wanted to read some classic books in case his teachers at Johnson wanted to know if he had read any good classic books. He went home and began to read GWTW. He was so engrossed in the book, he got starlted when the phone rang. He checked the Caller ID. The phone said, "Blocked." He warily picked up the phone."Hello", he said tentatively.

"I know about you and your dark past. You never fully got pay for what you did, though being arrested was a nice start," A raspy voice on the other end said.

"Who is this?" Darryl said.

"Just a "friend" who's been watching you for a while. I watched you when you stole those cars, I watched you when you stole people's hard-earned money."

"Leave me alone!" Darryl said frightened. "That was a long time ago and I haven't done that in over a year!" Who was this?

The voice laughed evilly. "You are an unloyal and undeserving friend, Darryl Johnson. You are a snitch. Why would you rat out your best friend, Sean Masters?"

"Sean deserved it. He killed people and got me arrested for it."

"Just remember, I'm watching you, Darryl Johnson. And don't think you're safe at that little boarding school of yours either. I'll be watching you at the Johnson school too. You're not safe anywhere." The voice laughed so chillingly, Darryl felt chills go down his spine.

The talker hung up the phone. Darryl furiously clicked the ringer to "OFF." Who the hell was that? Darryl shivered. Darryl felt like he was in some kind of stalker or horror movie. He kind of felt like Casey from Scream(Drew Barrymore), who was being stalked, but couldn't see her attacker. He wanted to call Sean. He called Sean and when they let him speak to Sean, he said, "Hey Sean. Guess what? Some guy called me and started telling me that he was watching me."

Sean said, "You really shouldn't snitch on your best friends,"

Darryl asked , "What do you mean?" Trying to play innocent.

Sean said, "So the police let you out because they couldn't find any evidence against you, huh?" He said mocking Darryl.

"Yes," Darryl said, still trying to play innocent.

"Yeah, and I'm Madonna," Sean said bitterly.

Darryl felt anger towards Sean aagain. "Sean, you KILLLED someone and put me into trouble for it. I thought we were friends."

"Yeah, define the term "Friends." Sean said bitingly. A "friend" doesn't rat you out. Just like, "Friends don't let friends drive drunk", "Friends don't rat out other friends." Sean said coldly.

"Okay, isn't your time up, Sean?" Darryl asked bitterly.

'Yeah, it is, Sean said coldly. "Goodbye, Fink, Stool Pigeon, Snitch, Rat."

Sean hung up the phone.

Darryl was miffed. How dare Sean turn on him again so quickly? He wished he could hit Sean right then.

He called Sean to tell him off. The receptionist put him through to Sean.

When Sean answered the phone, Darryl said angrily, “What the hell is your problem? I’m helping you out, Klepto,” Darryl spat out.

Sean said “I’m sorry I snapped at you. I was upset for a little while,” Sean said sheepishly.

“You mean, you’re not mad at me?”

“Are you kidding?” I’m not mad at cha.” Sean said. He sounded amicable again.

“Oh thank goodness.” Darryl said relieved.

Sean said, “So tell me about the mystery caller you were telling me about earlier.”

Darryl said, “That was scary. I didn’t even know who that was. The person knew all about my past,” Darryl said shuddering.

Sean said, “Your number is listed. Anyone can get your phone number, D.”

“Yes, that’s true,” Darryl said. “But who would call me and threaten me with my past life? I’m scared,” he confessed to Sean.

“Weren’t you scared when the cops came to arrest you? Weren’t you scared when I put the gun under your jaw?” Sean questioned.

“Yes,” Darryl replied. “What does that have to do with this?” Darryl asked perplexed.

“D, nothing happened to you in either of those situations. Just try to get to the bottom of this and you will be fine. Isn’t it times like this that you wish you were at Johnson, all safe?” Sean asked.

That sounded vastly familiar what Sean had said about Johnson.

“Sean,”………He started. Could Sean be the mysterious caller? No, it couldn’t be Sean! He screamed mentally, in denial. But then he remembered something.

“Yes?” Sean replied/prompted.

“You never wanted me to go to Johnson.” He said. “You resented me going to Johnson. In fact, you downright hated the idea of me leaving our little “group”, he said remembering.

“Yeah, so what?”

“Do you hate Johnson so much that you’d threaten me to NOT go back to Johnson?”

“I never threatened you to NOT go back to Johnson.” Sean replied.

“Yes, but would you?” Darryl asked him pointedly.

Sean was silent for a few moments. Then he spoke. “All right! I HATE the Johnson School! I wish it would close forever! I wish it would burn down!” Sean said passionately. He sounded like he was having a nervous breakdown.

“Do you hate it enough to make a threatening phone call to me?”

“No! I would never do that to you!” Sean said vehemently.

“You sure, Sean? “ He asked. “You wish I would stay down here and not go back to Jacksonville, don’t you? You don’t want me going back to the boarding school, do you?” He asked in an understanding, soft voice.

“All right! I did it. I’m sorry. I called your house and made that disturbing phone call to you. I was also upset that you had told the cop on me.” He sounded guilty. “Didn’t you realize something was up when I as myself started asking you why you, my friend, ratted me out and then called you a bad friend? The same that the “mystery” caller had said to you?”

“I’d thought about it, but hadn’t really “connected the dots together”,” Darryl confessed.

Sean said, “Can you come visit me again? I’ll tell you more. My time is going to be up soon. We get to spend much more time on the phone in the mornings and afternoons than we do for evening calls.”

Darryl said, “Okay”. He went back outside and went into his car. He drove back to the hospital and went to see Sean again.

He and Sean stared at each other for a full minute, neither of them speaking. Then Sean spoke.

“I blocked the phone number of the hospital when I called you, D. We are allowed to make outgoing phone calls if we are on good behavior,” he said with a wry smile. “I changed my voice when I spoke to you.”

Darryl understood why. Sean had been hurt when he made the phone call. He looked at Sean with compassion. “I’m not mad at you.”

“You aren’t?” Sean replied/ questioned.

“No, but you ARE the number one suspect, Sean,” he reminded him, changing the subject.

“Yeah, I know. I’m going to prison for a long time, aren’t I?” He looked at Darryl with large, frightened little boy eyes.

“Yes,” Darryl told him truthfully.

Just then, Julian and Mario came back.

“What are you guys doing here?” Sean asked.

“We called in sick,” Julian said. He fake coughed and Mario said, ‘I have a “fever” of “101 degrees,” he said winking and smiling.

Julian said softly, “You know, you’re in trouble, Sean,”

“I know,” Sean said, moaning and putting his head in his hands. Then he brightened up a little. "I told Darryl that we would play “regular” games. You want to play a final board game of Scrabble in case they come get me?” Sean asked.

“Sure” The rest of them agreed.

Sean took out the game and they all played. Darryl tried to cheat by making up completely obvious made up words.

Sean said, “No fair. You’re cheating.”

Darryl laughed and stopped making up words. Sean pouted whenever he couldn’t think of a word, though he got a couple in.. Julian and Mario were very good and Darryl did fairly okay. Finally, Julian won.

“That was fun,” Sean said happily. At least we got to play this “regular” game one last time.” Then his face got shadows as he thought about what would happen to him.

Julian said, “You know, we could hide you if the police come. Then we can help you escape from this hospital and run to Mexico."

Mario said dryly, “We live in Miami, Florida.”

Darryl said, “That’s a horrible idea. You shouldn’t run from your consequences, Sean. You need to pay for your actions. Or you’ll become a fugitive, which is worse than being a captured convict.”

“But, I’m scared,"Sean said.

Darryl said, ‘You shouldn’t run.”

Mario said, “Yeah, maybe it’s a good idea not to run.”

Julian begrudgingly agreed.

Mario looked out into the hallway. “There are police looking in different rooms!” He said excitedly.

Darryl looked at Sean and sighed. “Are you ready for the big time?” He asked. He tried to keep his voice light.

Sean shakily nodded. “Let’s all have one final group hug before I go to the slammer,” he said, also trying to sound light.

“We could still try my way before it’s too late,” Julian offered.

“Julian!” Darryl admonished him.

“Sorry,” Julian said sheepishly.

They all huddled together and had one big group hug. Sean stood in the “middle”.

“Bye, ya’ll,” Sean said, choked up.

“Bye” all three of them said in unison.

The police came into the room. “Sean Masters, we have an arrest warrant on you. You’re under arrest," One said. That one was Officer Patterson. The other one was Officer Michaels.

“Hi, Officers Patterson and Michaels!” Darryl said happily.

“Hey” They both said back.

Sean whispered in Sean’s ear, “Officer Patterson is a really nice cop. Just go with him peacefully." Sean nodded.

The officers waved their badges and Michaels waved the arrest warrant in Sean’s face.

Out loud, Darryl said, “Just go, Sean. Don’t make a run for it. Give yourself up peacefully. It’s much worse if you run.”

Sean allowed the cops to handcuff him peacefully. They read him his rights. They told him what prison he was going to.

Patterson said to Sean, “I’d never forget a face like yours.”

“Before you take him away, can you give us five minutes to say goodbye to him?” Darryl asked.

”Okay” Patterson agreed. Anything for my favorite 'suspect'".

Sean said jokingly, ‘You’d better take those five minutes and use it wisely.”

Darryl agreed. He said to Sean, “Be good, don’t drop the soap, and don’t start fights with other inmates.”

Mario said, “We’ll visit you in prison.”

Julian said, “Don’t try to escape from prison. Stay in the prison area.”

Darryl whispered in Sean’s ear, “And no more trying to commit suicide.”

Sean replied, "I won’t. I promise."

Darryl said, "And no more Crimeful games, like ‘”Let’s go give the inmates concussions”.

Sean said again, ‘I won’t. I promise.”

Sean said, “Thanks” and “goodbye” to all of them, and they said it back. As he was led out of the room by the cops, he said to Darryl, “At least they got the right guy this time.”

The cops took Sean out of sight.

*********************
A few days later, after a short trial where Sean pleaded guilty to first degree murder, Julian, Darryl, and Mario visited him behind bars. Sean looked at them sheepishly and said, “I’m finally behind bars. He was wearing a blue jumpsuit that had an inmate number on it.

“Look at the fabulous life of prison life,” Sean said teasingly. “You get to eat gruel, you get to watch the same channel as EVERYBODY else, and you get to shower with at least 20 other guys. You also get to take a dump in front of EVERYONE. At least no one will tease you for your choice of style.” He chuckled.

Darryl said, “Sounds like a dream come true. Say, how do I get this fabulous vacation package?” He asked, teasing.

“It’s easy. All you have to do is to rob a bank or commit a crime using a gun, which you usually use to rob a bank, and you will be right here vacationing like me,” Sean said, smiling mischievously.

Julian said, “I’m glad you seem to be okay, Sean.”

Sean nodded. “Mario, did you tear up the picture I took of you?”

Mario said, “Yes. It’s confetti now. How long are you in for, pal?”

Sean gave him a disturbed, embarrassed look. “30 years.”

Darryl exclaimed, “Damn! That’s longer than I’ve been alive!”

Mario exclaimed, “That’s my whole life, plus a 13 year old’s life!”

Julian exclaimed, “You’ll be out in the year 2036! You’ll be 47 years old by the time you get out!”

Sean said, “At least my conscience is clear. Or as clear as it can be for a murder,” he said, looking at them intently. “They do give time off for good behavior, right?”

Darryl nodded and said, “Just stay good, and you might get out in 27 years!” he said like a game show host.

Mario said, “No escaping prison, young man,” he said wagging his finger at Sean playfully. To Julian he said, “And no “helping” him out of prison either,” he said, mock scolding Julian.

“I won’t, “ both of them promised.

Darryl said, “I’ll write you from Johnson”, he promised.

He saw the hurt look that Sean flashed him.

“I’m sorry, but I love that boarding school, he said apologetically to Sean. “It’s a great school, and it helped me to get my life straight.”

Sean looked down and said, “Then you’d better go back there.” He said this in a sad, but “letting go” tone.

Darryl said, “I’ll write you from Johnson and tell you all about what’s been happening there, and you can write me from prison and tell me hat’s been happening in prison life. We can be pen pals."

“Okay,” Sean agreed.

Mario said, ‘We can all be pen pals, minus Julian and I being pen pals to each other.”

All four agreed and said their goodbyes. Mario, Julian, and Darryl each went to his house.

My favorite part of the ending is where it shows they all faired well, even Sean after prison.

Hey, WebWarrior, would you be so quick to forgive Sean after he called you and scared the scrap out of you? And about the end, I HAD to make Darryl a psychiatrist. If you read the story, you will see that he understands people's feelings...........;)

Janice, how the hell did Sean turn from a total hardass badass(are we allowed to say ass on SO?) to a soft needy person? In the first few chapters, Sean was really tough. Then he got softer and softer. Why didn't you make him stay a totla hardass?
