The show was on for 6 seasons, from 1974 to 1979. The first season was as a "midseason replacement" in Feb. of 1974 (the 1973-74 season), so that was basically just half a season. I believe it was cancelled in August of 1979.
A Short Summary of the 6 Seasons----------
1. 1973-74: 1st season. 13 episodes
2. 1974-75: Most popular season/peaked at #7 in ratings
3. 1975-76: Last season w/John Amos as James. Amos is fired prior to start of season 4 due to offstage disputes.
4. 1976-77: James killed off in 2 parter at beg. of season. Florida is now forced to raise the kids alone. J.J. becomes man of the house. By the end of the season, Florida meets and gets engaged to Carl Dixon.
5. 1977-78: Esther Rolle leaves series prior to beginning of season 5. She is written out as being "away on honeymoon w/Carl Dixon." Willona adopts Penny Gordon(Janet Jackson), a victim of child abuse. Bookman becomes a regular cast member.
6. 1978-79: Florida returns to the series for Thelma's wedding to Keith Anderson (Ben Powers joins the cast as Thelma's new husband; Esther Rolle returns to series as the star). Seems too late to save the ratings, however, and GT is cancelled in Aug. of 79. End of series finds J.J. landing a profitable job as a cartoonist, Thelma discovers she is pregnant, and Keith lands a contract w/Chicago Bears. Everyone is leaving the ghetto.
