Car 54 was on Nick@Nite I believe beginning in 1987 ( I have tapes of it when it aired in the summer 0f 88 ) and lasted til 1990.

Car 54 then poped up on the now defuct HA! channel.

Then in 1991 HA! became CTV The Comedy network which soon became Comedy Central by mid 1991.

Car 54 was on the very very early days of Comedy Central.
But by the end of 91, it was gone.

I overheard that Sidney Poitier played a role in this show....is it true, and which role did he play?

I don't know about Sidney Poitier appearing on the show (although I don't dispute it, either). Car 54 was one of the first TV programs to have an integrated cast. I can tell you that Black actors did have recurring roles on this program. Ossie Davis appeared in a number of episodes as one of the Policemen assigned to the 54th (although I can't remember his character's name), as did Mel Stewart, and of course, Nipsey Russell. I think Ivan Dixon (who later appeared in Hogan's Heros) was on the show as well.

One thing that I've found frustrating about this show is that the closing credits usually only list the main characters that appeared in a given episode. There have been a few times when I was curious to know who played a particular character, only to find their names are not included in the credits.
