View Full Version : Did everybody seem more rude during Season 5?
seventies_sitcoms 02-09-2006, 02:22 PM I don't know. I'm watching the S5 set now, and it seems like everybody seems more rude to each other. Everybody is especially bad to Bookman, especially Willona I think. Is that because there was no actual parental figure in the apartment I guess.
One thing I don't like is that Willona toned down and was no longer the "Rona Barrett" type she used to be so much like before. She still found things out, but didn't seem as "gossipy." Even her threads were toned down. Boy, Penny ruined things somewhat huh?
I think they might have went a little overboard with Thelma's cooking jokes.
I find it hard to believe J.J. was seeing was a married woman, and everybody seemed to take a little too light. Florida would've set him straight in one second. I would've loved to have seen Flo tell the lady off instead of Willona.

the Thelma bad cooking stuff was way overboard. I agree with you. Man, the writers were either lazy or just so bad they couldn't come up with more original stuff to get laughs. One can only take so much "buffalo butt" and "you old chihuaha face". If Thelma's cooking was sooooo bad, then why eat it?? They didn't look like they suffering from the bad effects of it.
Why do you think Willona told Thelma to let her (Willona) be the one to tell the married woman off? I mean, what was wrong with letting Thelma have her say?? and then let Willona get her piece at the woman?? sounds like a thread for you to make regarding this situation!:)
mstewart 02-11-2006, 09:47 PM When Esther Rolle couldn't take J.J. antics anymore and left the show they should had cancelled the show all together. That particular season look like it had bad effects from Esther leaving and still dealing with John Amos being fired and killing off James Evans. Good Times had the potential of going down as a classic sitcom but with all that was going on behind the scenes and losing two lead actors because of lack of integrity of the show killed it. Willona was not as fun loving in season 5 and it was intentional with her having a child. I loved Willona during the John Amos years. She would provide comic relief. The character of Willona Woods was meant to be a supporting player and when she became the lead in season 5 the character was ruined and on top of that making her a mother.

And futhermore, why would Janet Dubios and Janet Jackson be on front of the Jet Magazine in 1977 like the show was doing so well in the ratings-lol

seventies_sitcoms 02-12-2006, 04:56 PM There was way too many buffalo butt jokes too. Were they trying to make the show like "What's Happening?" LOL

I think that Rerun from "What's Happening!!" was picked on for his overweightness more than Bookman from GT. In fact, I almost felt sorry for Rerun but I never really felt sorry for Bookman.

Bookman wasn't exactly innocent either ya know. Wilona's character grew imo, she couldn't stay the Rona Barrett of the Ghetto forever. I happen to like season 5.
MikeLutton 02-13-2006, 02:18 AM i m wondering who the hell is rona barrett lol
comedyfreak 02-13-2006, 02:33 PM She was queen of the celebrity Gossip during the 70's and I think she even had a show.

Here is a pic of her. She was THEE GOSSIP PERSON OF THE WORLD!!! She dished out dirt and all that good stuff. Nowadays, you have so many sources, but she was MISS THANG back in those dayz!!! That's the thing abt watching these shows that come from a different era. First time viewers or young viewers will not know the people that are mentioned on the show.
I am a child of the late 60's and I watched GT's during it's first run.
MikeLutton 02-13-2006, 10:12 PM oh k cool is she stil alive i know she dont got her own show r anything anymore so just wondering
Railwaybus 02-14-2006, 02:06 PM I think that Rerun from "What's Happening!!" was picked on for his overweightness more than Bookman from GT. In fact, I almost felt sorry for Rerun but I never really felt sorry for Bookman.Bookman was not that fat.He had a beer belly but he was not that overweight to warrant all those buffalo butt jokes. Many TV characters like Rerun or Roseanne were heavier.I always thought that Bookman was not that fat and it was sort of stupid that they made fun of him that much He just wasn't that fat.
PracTz 02-14-2006, 02:09 PM No surprise they were ruder! Florida was always the one who insisted on everyone minding their manners so when she was gone, so was the only reason for them to attempt to have manners!
