From Stephen Cox's book, THE MUNSTERS (1989):

Al Lewis's parents were of Polish and German descent. He tried several jobs
including salesman, waiter, owner of a poolroom, store detective, circus clown,
and school teacher.

He received a Ph.D. in child psychology. He read almost a book a day from the
time he was eleven. He was also a writer and wrote such books as the "How-
To" series published by Random House. Titles include "How to Take a Train
Ride," "How to Go on a Picnic," "How to Visit Grandma," and "How to Prepare
for a Weekend Away from Home."

When asked what accomplishment he was proudest of, Al Lewis replied, "My
three sons."
