My season 3 MTMS set arrived today,as stated many times on this site,the show got better and better with each season.
It is good to see Georgette making her first appearance in "Rhoda Morgenstern Minneapolis to New York".
One of my favourite Lou/Mary scenes of the entire show,is when Lou comforts Mary in the ladies powder room in "But Seriously Folks".
I also love "Rhoda the Beautiful",Rhoda looking great after losing 20 pounds but still putting herself down,Phyllis,selfish as usual launching into her old talent act as Rhoda and Mary are trying desperately to find Rhoda something to wear for the beauty contest.
My only moan is that there are no extras on the DVD set,no commentaries etc but hey,can live with that,roll on season 4 on DVD!:)

For me, the third season is when this series, the writing and all the characters really came to life. I find the first season simply boring (and I have no plans to buy the first season DVDs). The second season was better and had it's moments. But in the third season, from the very first episode of the third season, everything finally seemed to come together and gel. I was wondering, was there some big conference among the writers in the summer of '72 where they all got together and figured out how to make this show funny? From the end of the second season to the beginning of the third, there just seems to be such a sudden change in the comedic energy of this show.

To me, the characters AND scripts that first season were way too low key. Mary herself was kind of bland. And there was too much focus on the Mary/Rhoda relationship, which I never found all that interesting. Back when this show was airing on Nick at Nite, whenever I turned it on and heard the show opening with the words "how will you make it on your own," I would immediately change the channel. I just couldn't sit through those episodes. And the one you mention with the ex-football player was particularly painful. Man, that was awful! And another that sticks out in my mind as really bad was the one with Slim Pickens in that cartoonish portrayal of the station owner. Most of the rest were not necessarily bad, just painfully dull.

Yes I agree with you there,the one about the cowboy station owner was one of my least favourite episodes too.
Its interesting how characters like Lou and Ted are different in season 1,Lou is like a wild animal almost and Ted is not quite the loveable idiot that he would later be so good at.

I know what you mean. Ted was still an idiot in the first season, just not a lovable one. There seemed to be no depth to his character. He would just come out, say something stupid, then exit. Lou would just drink and growl.
