There was a live audience in season 2.

I just saw this episode and there was no live audience, or it was heavily "sweetened" with canned laughter. Many season 2 episodes seemed to use laugh tracks, but this particular episode sounded all canned.

Mother Jefferson's Birthday is most noted for being an episode, where the canned laughter being added originated during the early 70s. I'm pretty sure, every season was videotaped in front of a live audience. Canned laughter is added in later during editing.

There defintely wasn't a live audience after 1981

They stopped taping live in season 6. All the episodes that have the piano solo in the closing credits were taped w/o a studio audience. I read somewhere that Norman Lear stopped doing all of his shows live around 1979. All in the Family's last season wasn't done live.
