View Full Version : The wrong MOVE
TVFactFan 02-06-2006, 01:22 AM Watching TVography of this show I was able to find out the setting was changed to California because of sagging ratings. But instead of moving the characters to California, shouldn;t the show just have been moved to another timeslot since L&S couldn't compete with the Waltons on Thursdays Nights?-lol Seems like that move would have made a lot more sense.
comedyfreak 02-09-2006, 10:34 AM Yes, I'm in agreement with you. The show should have stayed at 8:30pm on Tuesday night.

I think since it was number 1, ABC proabably thought he could help the ratings for a night that wasn;t as strong like Thursdays.
angelbluez 02-13-2006, 11:49 PM Yeah the move was soooo DUMB, I remember Penny or Cindy saying that the move was a bad mistake because they were having stars on there who were suppose to have been in their 20's but since it was actually in the mid-late 70's the stars were actully in their 50's LOL.
Like when they had an episode where Lavern and Shirley met Fabian. He was in his 20's in the 50's but since the show actually took place in the 70's Fabian looked dumb trying to act and LOOK 20 LOL

Fred Silverman from ABC said-"L&S was nothing but aggravation the second it was on the air"-LOL

TVFactFan 02-14-2006, 12:27 AM Yea but he sure loved those ratings.
He said that a lot of Problems came with the good ratings and that he wish it was never put on the air-lol He said the Happy Days cast never caused as much aggravation as the L&S cast-lol

Yea their was a lot of jealousy on that set that probably made it difficult.

Yeah that's true, Penny Marshall was jealous because cindy williams was the Cute one-lol
Moonlight Lady 02-14-2006, 11:33 AM Yep, and Cindy was jealous because she thought Penny got more lines and more laughs than she did.
snl 70s show fan 02-22-2006, 07:30 PM ive heard garry marshall say many times that he told fred silverman way before l&s went on the air that penny was very moody and hard to work with and was going to be a giant pain but fred didnt heed garrys warnings .you would think garry warning him about his own sister would have been a red flag but i guess not
shotzette 02-23-2006, 09:15 PM I think that any hope for a happy work place would have been a pipe dream considering that of the four main stars, one was the producer's sister who may or may not have earned her success on her own merits, one was an actress who considered television slumming (which it was considered to be to an extent) and was damaging her potential film career, and two actors who already had a cult-classic appeal via their radio show and probably felt like sell outs doing a formulaic sitcom. Considering how much behind the scenes strife and unprofessionalism that there was, I think it's a small miracle that they were able to create such a popular and beloved show. I think the main four (and the supporting cast of three) are very talented individuals, and the fact that they were able to still turn out such a wonderful show says a lot about them.
I'm probably alone in this, but I would love to see the suviving members of the cast reunite in some venue to play different characters. I'd just love to see what the dynamic would be like.

Buffyboy323 03-01-2006, 05:42 PM Well the timeslot move wasn't as bad as the Shirley move. Still Cannot believe Cindy Williams left the series. The last season, there should have been a Title Change too.
shotzette 03-02-2006, 03:47 AM I agree, Buffy Boy. Cindy Williams leaving in the last season was the deathblow to the series--not to mention the fact that she damaged her own career and reputation with such unprofessional behavior. I really wish that she'd stayed to the end and that the fans had been given some closure.

treky 03-05-2006, 02:59 AM I remember, back when N@N was showing it, I saw the opening of one of those last shows, after Cindy had left, and just from that-not the show iself, just the OPENING-it looked so stupid I turned it off.
Brian Damage 03-05-2006, 12:16 PM The California move was an utter disaster. Nothing screams "Jump The Shark!" than a move to a new location.

Who was in the opening credits? Laverne and Squiggy?-lol

Actually, Fabian was born February 6, 1943, so he would not have been 20 until the early 1960s.
Fabian has his own website! Check out www.fabianforte.com (http://www.fabianforte.com/) and knock yourself out!
alicefan4vr 07-09-2006, 05:27 AM Cindy DID NOT damage her career, NOR did she leave on her own. She has stated in numerous articles and in one majore LAWSUIT, that she left on maternity leave with FULL expectation to return, only to have PARAMOUNT fire her. She sued and won. It's just unfortch she's never been in another hit show, and that most peeps don't realize that she produced the HIGHLY successful "FATHER OF THE BRIDE" movies.
shotzette 07-10-2006, 10:48 AM Actually, Cindy Williams did damage her career with the drama surrounding her separation from L&S. She was labled, fairly or unfairly, as difficult and high maintenance and for the remainder of the 80's was relagated to cable work (back when there was a stigma), TV movies of the week, and the straight to video market. She was able get things back on track in the 90s by producing the Father of the Bride franchise (the first movie was VERY successful), and has since acted more regularly. I was personally blown away by the dark performance she gave on L&O:SVU a few years ago.
I don't think Paramount fired her as much as made working conditions intolerable by demanding that she still perform much of the physical comedy in her last few months of pregnancy. She had expressed the desire to leave earlier and this was probably the icing on the cake. I don't beleive that she "won" her lawsuit against Paramount; since they settled out of court; ie. both parties were willing to end teh court battle for a fee and get on with their lives.
