NEW YORK - Actor Al Lewis, the cigar-chomping patriarch of "The Munsters" whose work as a basketball scout, restaurateur and political candidate never eclipsed his role as Grandpa from the television sitcom, died after several years of failing health. He was 95.

Lewis, with his wife at his bedside, passed away Friday night, said Bernard White, program director at WBAI-FM, where the actor hosted a weekly radio program for years. White made the announcement on the air during the Saturday slot where Lewis usually appeared.

"To say that we will miss his generous, cantankerous, engaging spirit is a profound understatement," White said.

I hate I missed this one, A very talented actor who played the part of Grandpa to perfection.

He was great on both CAR 54 and THE MUNSTERS. One of my favorites actors.

Thats so sad. :( I loved him on the Munsters may he RIP.

I was lucky enough to have met Mr. Lewis (Grandpa) and to have had him visit my home. My heart is sadden at the lose of such a great man. He will be missed. We will never forget him.

It was amazing that he was still doing things well into his 90's. I never knew he was 95 when he died. He was the coolest, with a restaurant and a political career. We'll miss him. :crying:

Grandpa Munster from the 60's show The Munsters had passed on. I've been watching the Munsters ever since it first came on tv. Back when It came on tv in the 60's I had a picture book of them. I have no idea what happened to it. I bet it is worth something now. Rip...

It shows the drive and spirit of Al Lewis that he lived to the age of 95.

Was he 82 or 95??? Half of the reports state 82 and the other half state 95. Anyway's

A rich woman claims Grandpa is her long-lost husband.

I will be watching The Munsters Marathron from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm Central Time on Friday, Feburary 10, 2006

'The Muensters' was a good show. It's cool they're having a marathon.
Al Lewis made the show lots of fun. Him and Fred Gwyne were an great pair :)
Now, a 'Car 54' marathon would really be awesome because I haven't seen it in years.
Don't think it is even on TV anymore...sigh.

He will certainly be missed. Al's portrayal of Grandpa will be remembered and enjoyed for generations to come. (At least at my house!)

Two more things:

1. He wasn't 95 as all the reports have said. He was born April 30, 1923. He was 82. It's in the A&E Biography included in the season two DVD collection.
